Former Rep. Bob Schaffer (R-Colo.) said Saturday at a Lincoln Day Dinner that he would run for U.S. Senate in 2008...
Speaking at a small dinner in Teller County, Schaffer told a crowd of about 100 ...
He announced that we were the first to know that he is a candidate, said County Commissioner and former county Republican Party Chairman Bob Campbell. Campbell added that Schaffer said a formal announcement and release would be coming at a later date.
Current Teller County Republican Party Chairman Mark Sievers also confirmed Schaffers announcement: He did say that. He was unequivocal.

And who was Captain of the ship from 1998 to 2006 ? RINO Bill Owens. A Governor lives or dies by the performance of his party, and he failed on an epic scale.
"My bone of contention with you is over your ongoing rhetoric, in calling Bill Owens a RINO. That is absurdity of the highest order."
No, the truth is not an absurdity, except to those that can't handle it. There are different kinds of RINOs. RINOs in policy (i.e. Giuliani) and RINOs in sandbagging their party (i.e. Janklow of SD, Sundquist in TN, et al). Owens has the badge of the latter, and he also turned into the former while in office.
"But typical for a malcontent and disciple of kooky Rick Stanley."
I never heard of Stanley until you brought him up in the previous round. I have little use for Libertarians, and as a standard-bearer for that party, he has no vested interest in the Republican party. Most Libertarians have the nasty habit of depriving the GOP of wins in close contests, so as far as I'm concerned, they're merely helping the rodents. Just like Owens did. Like I said, you name-call other FReepers because they point that Owens was a disaster. You only make yourself look foolish for doing so.
"Ed Jones campaign sucked and he was another bad candidate. Period. John Morse had a huge cash cow in the numerous out of state Democratic Party backed, 527 groups that sponsored his campaign and the endless attack ads. I'm sure the El Paso County GOP will work at taking Morse down and if history is any indicator, Morse won't be around long."
Yeah, that's the same thing that was said when the rodents took the GOP by surprise in winning the legislature... a few cycles ago. Lo and behold, they're still there, and the state party keeps shrinking like testicles in icewater. That's another thing I disliked about Owens, he showed zilch respect to what Black GOP officeholders we had in the state. He left Vikki Buckley to twist in the wind in '98, screwed Joe Rogers, and did he lift a finger to help Jones ? Jones may have ran a sucky campaign, but in a historically GOP district for him to lose by 20% shows that Owens's leadership didn't help for crap. That's just one more seat we'll have to win back against an incumbent, an often damn hard task.
Should've run Bill Armstrong for Governor back in '98, then today we'd have had both the Senate seats, the legislature, 4 or 5 of the House seats, and a brand-spanking-new GOP Governor (probably Schaffer himself) to succeed him. Too late now.
Thanks for the ping. The last I heard was Bob saying he had not made up his mind yet. IF Bob Schafer runs, this would be a great race. He is a solid conservative who can articulate his positions and he will be able to sell himself to CO voters better than our past candidates.
Colorado politics ping!
It is interesting that he would announce in Teller County. He may have thought that it would not get reported from there ?
Apparently, there will be a formal announcement soon.
Frances and Bill Owens are still married.
No need to mention those two in the same breath.
Sinkspur was proven to be a 24K fraud. Not so with Pukin.
Have you heard Bob speak? He’s really good and passionate in his delivery. When I have heard him he seems to draw audiences in with his logic and knowledge. He will show well in debates and he will attract voters to him, more than just the base.
Sorry, I did not know. Glad the Owenses are still together.
Regarding the Senate race, I hope Schaeffer can win. It is imperative to hold the seats we currently have and perhaps gain a couple more. Though I am not too optimistic about NH and OR. Of course if Gordon Smith lost it would not be that great of a loss. Still I guess we must hold our nose and hope even the moderates win just to we can make Reid the *minority* leader again.
Yada yada yada..... RINO RINO RINO..... Owens Owens Owens
Same old s**t from you. LOL
Come back when you can have a discussion like a grown-up, otherwise don’t waste my time with your crap again.

I was trying to engage you on the facts, but you'd have no part of it. You're take on Owens is to call him a RINO at every opportunity. Kinda juvenile, childish. Appears as though you have a disdain for Owens. So be it.
For eight years Owens did a good job for Colorado and most Coloradans agree. So do most conservatives I know.
No, bub, you weren't. When you were informed on the facts, you retreated to your Holy Trinity that Owens was the Second Coming, and absent that, your ad hominems, which litter this thread, followed by even more juvenile "LOL's" that make it look as though you have yet to reach double digits in your time on earth. In other words, the "facts" comment is my line. Screaming "same old $hit" isn't a fact."
"You're take on Owens is to call him a RINO at every opportunity."
My "take" is backed up by facts and figures. "You'res" (sic) are backed up by ad hominems.
"Kinda juvenile, childish."
You're the one who seems to have an aversion to people that take issue with anything you say, responding in kind not with facts to shore up your position, but by personal insults and derisions (starting with the poster who stated that Colorado is starting to resemble California in its politics (BTW, he's right)). So as they say, look in the mirror, sir.
"For eight years Owens did a good job for Colorado"
's Democrat party. He gave them majorities on the legislative and federal front where there hadn't been one before for many years... and he gave the state Bill Ritter. Good job, not.
"and most Coloradans agree. So do most conservatives I know."
The voices in your head don't count. You're the only person I know (except for Democrats and his paid flunkies) singing his praises. The rest of us can see what he did to Colorado's Republican party. I hope you're excited about the Governing rodent party, because your boy Bill made it all possible. Colorado RIP, it's now New Mexico Del Norte.
Your wild rant is noted.
I rest my case.
Wrong. You just need to rest.
Don’t ping me anymore, moron. Stop wasting JimRob’s bandwith.
You best settle down there, bucko.
And I’ve never pinged before. Simply responding to your replies to me. Now stop whining.
Yep, saw it in the Rocky. I guess he wanted to wait a little longer before announcing, but the cat's out of the bag now.
I think Shaffer would be a great Senator, a solid conservative. It'll be a tough race, though, with Udall ahead in money and name recognition.
I missed this in our local outlets.
I hope that he wins.
