Freeper information requested - Caller I.D. reads 000-000-0000 (Does this happen to you?)
May 5, 2007 | Self

Posted on 05/05/2007 5:53:05 PM PDT by Las Vegas Dave

I have been receiving calls from 000-000-0000, when I pick up the phone, silence.
I immediately hang up, for I have had telemarketers call, see a FISH on the line, and then begin their sales pitch.

Can anyone offer any information who may be doing this?

(The search websites offer little information.)

We still get some who are exempt, usually police benevolent kind of stuff, which I don’t but anyway.

I used to get those "police benevolent" kind of calls too, despite being on the federal do-not-call list.

One of them even showed up as "police-emergency" or some such thing on the caller ID -- obviously designed to alarm the call recipient into thinking some family member had been in an accident and that it was the police calling!

They wouldn't quit, even after I told them I never gave money over the phone. So I filed complaints with the do-not-call registry, and haven't heard from them since.

"Have you tried the national "Do Not Call" list? I used to get a lot of telemarketing calls, but after I got on that list I don't get any at all. It's a huge fine if a telemarketer calls someone who is on that list."

I did that and thank God most of the calls have stopped. I had one pest who just would not stop calling. I kept asking them to put me on their do not call list, but they kept calling.

That's not very bright of them.  I seem to recall that the fine for violating the DNC list is something like five or seven thousand dollars.....PER CALL.  The next time they call could be the occasion of an extremely expensive phone bill for them and a very satisfying day for you  :-)

if it’s a telemarketer I immediately say “wait just a moment” and then throw the phone under a pillow or in a drawer. You’d be amazed how long some of these people will stay on the line.

Some VOIP services send out “ID unavailable” or a strange set of numbers.

The current one, on our home Land-line, is a recorded message for a specific person, with our Last Name. It asks us to press a number or number string IF that person is unknown to us. Is this VALID? Or should we hang up?

It's some third-rate bill collector looking for John Smith for ten bucks so he auto-dials every Smith in the phone book. Screw 'em. He ain't paying you to help him do his work.

Have you tried the national “Do Not Call” list?

We did that and it has reduced the number of call by 90% or so. It does help.

Any TM that call someone on this list is pretty dumb, since the person they talk to is not likely to be in a very receptive mood.

I like to pay my bills as well. It is simply a matter of ethics, and all that.

I have had problems with Collection Agencies because on more than one occasion I have been accused of not paying my Bills when in fact I have.

Mistakes and misunderstandings do happen on occasion, and in my experience, the mistakes that a lot of Companies make, are simply, not recognized or acknowledged, ever.

Anyhow, when problems arise, and disagreements ensue, the Collection Agencies are it seems to me to be comprised of some very seriously nasty people.

You are in my opinion, fortunate that you have apparently not ever been ever been targeted by the relentless antics of so called “professional” bill collectors.

Not that it is really relevant, but I think that the telephone companies are the worst of the lot when it comes to screwing up records. I got chased for years because of a Nine Dollar phone bill to somebody in the Dominican Republic. I have never ever in my life talked with anyone in that place.

The phone company reps told me to ignore the disputed figure, and somehow a collection agency got involved, and they went out of their way to make me miserable for a very long time. Ultimately, after many months my former wife paid the stupid nine dollars, and we had a fight about that.

The telephone companies have chased me for other silly things as well, and my conclusion is that, I seriously need to question the fact if I actually do need a telephone at all. I think not.

I found thios on the net on the 000-000-0000 type caller-id’s:

What is happening is telemarketers have found a way to NULL out the caller-id field on placed calls, so instead of using standard Caller Line Identity Restriction which will set outbound caller-id to anonymous they just make regular phone calls with a NULL from field. This was meant as a way of getting past people who have Anonymous Call Rejection.

Our Land-line IS on the Do Not Call List. I wonder if there is a way to punish this “autodialer”.

I didn’t mind this brief call, but if that Firm trys to use me to any deadbeat “Wilson”, I’ll need a Defense.

Way back “when”; my Sears Card sent me collection notices for a past-due balance of $0.00. These letters kept getting more & more aggressive.

I tried sending a check for that $0.00. The notices continued.

When Sears sent me a pre-paid envelope for use in paying that “delinquent bill”; I wrote another $0.00 check, put it and their Bill in the envelope; then taped the envelope to a Brick, and mailed it.

Some weeks later, I got a very nice letter from Sears {admitting their error}, and asking if I needed the Brick returned!

Has anyone ever considered that Do Not Call is a government site? You enter your number, and then the govt. has your number along with the personal information. I can’t remember if the donotcall.gov site asked me for my name, addr, etc... But, in any case, has anyone ever wondered what OTHER uses the Govt. may have for this database?
Hmmm...

‘THIS is a multiplexed data communications T1 line and you are interfering with federally regulated voice data transmittals, remove this number from your list immediately!’

I like that. I used to answer some of them, and just say "Hello?.... Hello?...."(act peeved) "Your nickel, start talking..."... "Hello?"

Ignoring anything they said (sometimes funny, often obscene). Eventually they would hang up. No sales pitch.

Now, if they don't leave a message, they do not get through.

I like your tagline Joe.

Although I have also considered ‘how often God laughs his A** off at the shenanigans of humans’...

God does have a sense of humor, the fact that He hasn’t snuffed me out yet, proves it. ;)

Anyone who doesn’t think God has a sense of humor hasn’t watched a peacock go through his gig for the hen—from the back.

The ostrich is another indicator, imo.

If He didn’t have a sense of humor, there’d have been a smoking hole in the ground where I had been standing long ago. (8^D)
