Fred Thompson: Actor, politician, candidate?
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 3, 2007 | Janet Hook

Fred D. Thompson never took an acting class, performed in summer stock or dreamed of Hollywood fame. But one day a big-name director, preparing a film about political corruption that Thompson had exposed, asked him to play himself in the movie.

A star was born. Thompson, then a lawyer, went on to make 23 movies, countless television programs and millions of dollars.

Now, the accidental actor is being urged to take another role he has not been gunning for, as a growing crowd of conservatives clamors for him to run for the Republican nomination for president.

Other candidates have been refining their game plans for years, but the former senator from Tennessee has glided almost without effort to a strong position in the early polls, even though most voters know him only as a district attorney on television's "Law & Order."

If Thompson answers the conservatives' call to enter the race — and he may offer a clue during an Orange County speech Friday — a prominent question will come with him: Will voters see a real-life American leader, or someone who only plays one on the screen?

As a candidate, Thompson would bring a compelling personal saga worthy of People magazine: From humble beginnings, he married at 17, did a star turn in the Senate's Watergate hearings, dated splashy younger women after his divorce, won a Senate seat and then left it amid the pain of a daughter's death. Now, at 64, he finds himself the remarried father of an infant and a toddler.

But some associates doubt

I haven't seen his stance on immigration/illegal immigration.

I haven't seen his stance on RKBA, either, but I assume he'll defend the 2nd.

If he'll just come out and say we're going to seal the borders, eliminate the illegals by whatever means necessary, and eliminate any and all social programs for illegals, he's got my vote.

We need to get ready.

The LSM has been scouring everywhere, looking for dirt on Fred. They’ve held their fire thus far as he’s not a candidate.

But once he announces it’ll be Katie Bar The Door!

The DBM will unload on Fred like a ton of bricks.

IMHO, the MSM is very concerned about Fred. He has the potential to make this a real horse race.

I wonder if any of the people who write these pieces have read any of his essays..or his lengthy submission to the Senate at the time of Clinton’s impeachment..

It looks as if plenty of people don’t “get” Fred yet. Probably because he simply doesn’t fit the typical politician mold- which is precisely one of his strengths.

Stay tuned:)

If Fred D. Thompson really puts his country first, he will give a run for the Presidency a charming pass.

On Sean Hannity the other night, Fred said he was for securing our Borders. Sean didn't give him another second to go into that in detail, before firing off the next question.

I suspect it's because Sean supports Rudy.

But you are correct, WE NEED to hear more from Thompson in that regard.

Why do you say that? From the looks of things, if Thopson does not run, this country will end up with either Rudy Giuliani, Hillary Clinton, or Barak Obama as its next president. Which one is preferrable to Thompson.

From the second link kev posted:

A sovereign nation loses that status if it cannot secure its own borders and we are going to do whatever is necessary to do so,

But what about the illegals already living here, destroying America? Is Fred going to implicitly embrace some type of amnesty?

He's being too restrained in his comments.

I think most pubbies agree we've got to secure the borders. I want to hear someone say we've got to eliminate the illegals. By whatever means necessary.

Because there is a man vastly more qualified to serve in that office. And, if FDT is at all intelligent, he knows it. A magnificient and dramatic move on his part would be to step aside and endorse that man, Duncan Hunter. And, if Duncan Hunter deemed Fred Thompson of national value, and I think he would, he could choose him as a running partner.

Maybe you haven't heard, but there is no electable candidate that is saying all of that.

Full disclosure: Thompson wants to seal the borders, but he understands that it is going to have to be accompanied with at least some amnesty. I agree.
