“He has suffered no ill effects from his occasional feeding of the contaminated Kirkland product.”

As far as you know...
I personally would not risk the lives of my pets with anything that’s known to be potentially harmful.

I know you’ve already thown out many $$ worth of food but I’d recommend changing your ‘emergency ration’ stocks.

For that matter, ... human beings also lack this ability, causing them great grief when consuming melamine-urea.

That can't be true for Infidels, everyone knows they have seven intestines. /This is your brain on Islam

Thank you for your expert post.

Vital Wheat Gluten Flour:

Also called "gluten flour", "instant gluten flour", "pure gluten flour", and "vital wheat gluten" depending on vendor and manufacturer. This is flour with the starch and bran removed. Gluten is the natural protein in the wheat endosperm which, when combined with water, forms a taffy-like dough. This retains the gas and steam from baking. Bob's Red Mill vital wheat gluten flour — and any other brand of vital wheat gluten flour (such as Hodgson Mill) that carries the same Nutrition Facts as those at right — is 75 to 80% protein. Nutrition Facts This yields approximately 24 grams of carbohydrate per cup. The process of keeping mostly the protein constituents of the wheat and very little of the starch makes this product a useful aid in low-carbohydrate baking. The protein binds moisture meaning your bread and baked goods will usually be more moist and "fresh" than traditional baking yields as well. This should never be confused with other gluten flours as mentioned below which can have significantly more carbohydrate.

OK??.....it ain't just pet food and many preprocessed foods are being imported from overseas.

Like I said, when profits and kickbacks are at stake, the government is silent.

What does this tell us about the wonderful NAFTA and CAFTA trade agreements we’ve embarked upon?

The excellent link arbee provided pretty much says it all: China blames the U.S. for not requiring the declaration in the first place!

ooo...look what I found through the Purina website (emphasis mine):

Where Does the Wheat Gluten Supply Come From

It should be noted that the wheat gluten used in most pet foods is the same quality wheat gluten used in human foods. It is sourced from the same countries, the same suppliers and inspected to meet the same high human food quality control standards. The U. S. is the largest user of wheat gluten in total, and our country's use of the ingredient in human and pet foods exceeds what is produced domestically by the agricultural industry. As a result, 80% of the U.S. demand for wheat gluten is fulfilled from Europe and Asia due to limited supplies in the U.S., where the remaining 20% is sourced.

Sound OK?

I had a Domino’s Brooklyn style pizza and both I and my nephew became ill. I threw up and that’s something I rarely do. Could Domino’s be one of the customers for chinese gluten?

"I have just thrown away a hundred pounds of these foods."

Why are you throwing the food away. Won't the stores give you a refund? I know Costco does.

Excellent find! Tracing the gluten chain backwards, using Purina’s own attempt to brag on its quality! You know we’ve all probably eaten our share of this poison by now.

No agonizing here. I feed my dogs Canidae. I had tried the Blue Buffalo treats, which is why I had contacted them.

Here is what Canidae has to say about this issue:

http://www.canidae.com/

Industry Recall Update for May 3, 2007

In light of the unfortunate current pet food recall by other respectable pet food manufacturers, our phone lines and emails are tied up with concerned customers. We want you, our valued customer, to feel secure with the continued use of our products. CANIDAE® Pet Foods in no way is affected by the recall, nor are any of our products produced in any of the recalled production facilities.

It appears from the latest news within our industry that all recalls are from Glutens imported from China, a protein source that is extracted from Wheat or Rice. The wheat or rice is not the issue, but the glutens extracted, stored, and then imported from China. Again, CANIDAE does not use Glutens in any form, and we do not import any ingredients from China or overseas.

CANIDAE Pet Foods also does not produce cuts and gravies, pouches, and does not contain corn, wheat, soybeans, or Glutens in any of our products or formulations, and all ingredients are of US origin, meaning proudly raised and grown in the USA.

Our heartfelt concerns go out to all those affected by the recall.

BINGO!!!

The government and corporations lie and the people and pets die.

So many do not grasp the full spectrum of all the US imports these days.

Most likely the meat. Could have been the cheese or the sauce.

Sorry to hear that. Domino's use to be really good about their ingredients back in th '70's, but, competition to make a buck....well. Was the pizza well cooked?

It should be pretty obvious by now that ALL foodstuff ingredients from China should be considered contaminated. We’ve no doubt been eating food contaminated by Chinese ‘additives’ for years. Nothing has been checked, ever, so this may be a new discovery- but we are fools is we believe that this is a new thing.
China has been poisoning the world.
I’m only surprised that people aren’t producing plastic dishes in the bathroom.

Let’s stop agonizing over which brand of pet food to buy and simply give up on them for awhile.

That's what we've done.

Our two spoiled dogs are now further spoiled by a simple home-made stew of boiled chicken, peas, broccoli, raw carrots, oatmeal, and pinto beans. I'll probably throw some ground beef in their next batch.

They love it and are doing quite well on it. If you cook it in bulk, it's not terribly time-consuming nor much more expensive than buying bagged dry food.

After six weeks it should be apparent that any company importing any pet food ingredients from China should recall all of their products until the full breadth and scope of the Chinese contamination can be determined.

This is not just pet food, but human food also. And, recalling all the food that "might" be contaminated from China would not be feasible.
