More than one in three HIV positive gay men say they have unprotected sex, reveals a community survey, published ahead of print in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. And almost one in five HIV negative men said that they do the same, the figures show.
The findings are based on a survey of men at gay bars, clubs, and saunas in London, Manchester, and Brighton, UK, between 2003 and 2004. The surveys, which were carried out at 90 venues, involved information on lifestyle, background, and sexual behaviour.
Almost 3600 questionnaires were handed out, 2640 of which were completed. Saliva samples were also requested to find out about HIV prevalence, and 2311 men agreed to provide these. The rate of HIV infection was highest in Brighton, at almost 14%, and lowest in Manchester, at 8.6% But the rates of undiagnosed infection was high in all three cities, ranging from one in three in Brighton to more than four out of 10 (44%) in London.
Across the entire sample, one in three men who was HIV positive did not know they had the infection. This was despite the fact that over two thirds of these men said they had been to a sexual health (GUM) clinic within the past year.
Almost one in five (18%) of HIV negative men and over a third (37%) of HIV positive men said they had had unprotected sex with more than one partner in the past year. Over the same time period, one in five HIV negative men and four out of 10 HIV positive men said that they had had a sexually transmitted infection.
The authors conclude that despite the availability of treatment and a national policy to promote HIV testing, a significant proportion of infection remains undiagnosed. They call for renewed efforts to be made to boost diagnosis and curb risk behaviours that encourage onward transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
Say now, isn’t that a hugh surprise. In fact, it’s so hugh I’m sorry I bothered to mention it.
Homosexuality, particularly male homosexuality is a mental disorder, pure and simple.... why would anyone expect them not to engage in behavior that is a danger to themselves or others?
But this disease was politicized decades ago and President Reagan was blamed for not preventing it.
********************************
Funny how when Bill Clinton gave HIV to thousands of Canadian Hemophiliacs nobody ever mentions it..
Meanwhile, the books and life of Randy Shilts are celebrated for their ‘honesty.’
Oh well....Thier death wish is their own fault.
Every homosexual male should have "HIV +" tattooed in large letters on their rear end.
Then at least their "partners" can't say they weren't warned.
Their bad.
Big difference whether pitching or catching unprotected.
Too bad AIDS has such a long shelf life.
What the world needs is a SAIDS - Super AIDS. Once infected, you’re dead within the week.
That 3% of the population needs a little thinning out.
How sad. Politics has turned an essentially preventible [horrific] disease into a scourge run amok.
The weight of these deaths lies squarely upon the militant gay lobby. A 25 year campaign to convince the people that it is a heterosexual disease. 25 years of brutally silencing anyone that attempted to tell how the disease is really spread.
Self serving, power hungry hyprocrites.
It will have to be in phosphorescent paint so the willy ones can’t turn the lights out first!
“The latest fad in the homosexual community is to deliberately get AIDS so you can stop worrying about getting it.”
Drama queen mentality.
Exactly what I was going to say - shucks.
Question to ask your liberal friends:
‘If Darwin was right (and liberals believe he was), how is it gays still exist?’
Be prepared for stunned silence for a few seconds....
‘Big difference whether pitching or catching unprotected.”
First time I ever heard/saw that phrase was from Al Pacino in a movie called “Cruising”. Made me shudder back then too.
Checking their morals at the closet door. If a person wants to pack with a friend then he is responsible for the AID’s that he may contract. Protected or not.
BTW, I’ll bet the % unprotected is much higher. Denial does not change the outcome.
None of our business questioning their values. It’s the taxpayers’ job to protect practicing gays, no matter how careless they are. (sarc).
