Iran arrests student editor over insulting Islam
From AFP:
TEHERAN - Iran has arrested the editor of a student paper after the publication of material deemed insulting to Islam in four reformist papers at a prestigious Teheran university, press reports said on Saturday.
Ahmad Ghassaban the editor of Sahar (Dawn), a student paper in Amir Kabir University, was arrested on Thursday, the reformist Etemad daily said.
His arrest came after caricatures and articles deemed insulting to Islam appeared on campus in papers bearing the insignia of Sahar and three other student publications.
It was not clear exactly what the reportedly offensive material contained.
Ghassaban and other editors belonging to a reformist student movement denied any involvement, saying the images were put into papers by unknown individuals as a plot to discredit them.
Student members of the Basij militia have reportedly protested against the material in the past days, calling for the expulsion of those responsible for their publication.
The Iranian judiciary said on Wednesday it had arrested five people — none of them students — linked to the publication of the material in question.
Etemad said 120 student publications had supported the Amir Kabir editors and called for action against those who forge student papers.
Amir Kabir University was involved in student demonstrations that rocked Iran in 2002 and has often been seen as a hotbed of student radicalism.
A speech by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the university last year was interrupted by heckling and jeers, with one student burning his picture and another hurling a shoe.

“Extra police are being sent to Wanganui amid fears of an all-out gang war after a sleeping toddler was killed in a drive-by shooting.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A homicide investigation is under way, after the two-year-old girl died in her Puriri Street house, in the suburb of Gonville, on Saturday night. Police believe the house attacked was rented by a member of the Black Power gang and say several vehicles were involved in the shooting.
More officers have been sent to the city, amid heightened fears of an all-out war between Black Power and rivals the Mongrel Mob.
Area Commander for Wanganui, Inspector Duncan MacLeod, says a number of people were at the house on Saturday when several vehicles drove past and shots were fired at it.
He says the girl was asleep at the front of the house and was hit by one of the bullets. A post mortem examination will be carried out in Wellington on Monday.”
I and the rest of NZ have been following this horrifying story with great interest today.
Drive-by shootings. Toddler gets killed. I guess it was just a matter of time before this happened in our corner of Paradise.
It makes me very, very angry!

A wee toddler of two years old is dead for stupid, stupid reasons in Wanganui, normally a very beautiful and historic town in the Manawatu. “Outrage” isn’t quite the right sentiment to describe what New Zealand is feeling right now. But for want of a better word it will have to do.
I’m hoping that this latest outrage will finally jolt the government into getting serious about law and order, and stop stuffing around with silly legislation (like banning corporal punishment by parents).
It really is merely a question of political willpower, to be followed by resolute action. It would have been much easier to fix this ten years ago, as our former PM Mike Moore (no relation) suggested it needed to be. He famously predicted that unless NZ got on top of its gang problem in 5 years it would be too late. Time is proving him right, and tragically so.
It will take more than passing a few “feel good” laws: we’ve already got more than plenty of those, and what the gangs are doing is already quite illegal. It will require (in my view) the establishment of a separate law enforcement agency, something like your FBI, with different rules of engagement than those currently enjoyed by the NZ Police. And it would need to involve the likes of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs.
Time will tell if our government has the strength of Character to do what is necessary — even though it will be difficult and, amongst some folk, unpopular.
Excellent article, somewhat(!) dated, here:

Almost ten years old, the situation has clearly deteriorated. However, the article does set down the NZ issues and sitrep rather well.

Syrupy killer in medicine bottle
Chron.com ^ | May 6, 2007 | WALT BOGDANICH and JAKE HOOKER
Posted on 05/06/2007 8:43:15 AM PDT by COUNTrecount
“Records show in 3 of last 4 global cases, the poison sold as glycerin was made in China”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A syrupy poison, diethylene glycol, is an indispensable part of the modern world, an industrial solvent and prime ingredient in antifreeze. It also is a killer. And the deaths, if not intentional, are often no accident.
The kidneys fail first. Then the central nervous system begins to misfire. Paralysis spreads, making breathing difficult, then often impossible without assistance. In the end, most victims die.
Many of them are children, poisoned at the hands of their unsuspecting parents.
Over the years, the poison has been loaded into all varieties of medicine cough syrup, fever medication, injectable drugs a result of counterfeiters who profit by substituting the sweet-tasting solvent for a safe, more expensive syrup, usually glycerin, commonly used in drugs, food, toothpaste, and other products.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “One lingering mystery involves the name of the product made by the Taixing Glycerine Factory. The factory had called its syrup “TD” glycerin. The letters TD were in virtually all the shipping documents. What did TD mean?
Spanish medical authorities concluded that it stood for a manufacturing process. Chinese inspectors thought it was the manufacturer’s secret formula.
But Yuan Kailin, a former salesman for the Glycerine Factory, said he knew what the TD meant because a friend and former manager of the factory, Ding Yuming, had once told him. TD stood for the Chinese word “tidai” (tee-die), said Yuan, who left his job in 1998 and still lives about a mile from the factory.
In English, tidai means substitute. A clue that might have revealed that the poison was hiding in plain sight.
It was in the product name.”

Nine killed in Thai Muslim south
The “restive” Thai Muslim south, that is. From Agence France-Presse:
YALA, Thailand (AFP) - At least nine people including three children were killed in a bomb attack and shootings by suspected Islamic rebels in Thailand’s restive Muslim-majority south, police said Saturday.
A 15-kilogram (nine pounds) bomb hidden under a bridge went off late Saturday, killing a two-year-old Muslim girl and two border patrol officers in Yala, one of three violence-torn southern provinces bordering Malaysia.
The adult victims were among six border patrol officers travelling on motorcycle, police said, adding the bomb was set off by remote control.
The attack capped a day of violence in Yala, where at least six people were killed in separate attacks by suspected Islamic militants.
A Muslim man was gunned down Saturday in a drive-by shooting, while rebels ambushed a motorcycle late Friday and shot dead a Muslim father and his two children, an 11-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.
