A civil servant who leaked a secret memo about George W. Bush wanted it to be seen by US presidential candidate John Kerry, the Old Bailey heard.
David Keogh, 50, from Northampton, is said to have passed a highly sensitive document detailing talks between Mr. Bush and Tony Blair to Leo O'Connor.
Mr. Keogh told jurors the contents of the memo had preyed on his mind.
Mr. Keogh and Mr. O'Connor, 44, also of Northampton, deny three charges under the Official Secrets Act.
Mr. Keogh had been asked to copy out the memo for distribution to high-ranking UK officials.
The civil servant arranged to meet Mr. O'Connor at the Labour club in Northampton to arrange to leak the document, recording an Oval Office meeting between the two leaders in April 2004, jurors heard.
Giving evidence Mr. Keogh told a jury that he hoped it would be used to raise questions in the House of Commons, and also that he wanted it to be used in the US.
"The main person in my mind was John Kerry, who at the time was American candidate for the US presidential election in 2004," he said.
He admitted that he had unavourable views on Mr. Bush...
Mr. Keogh and Mr. O'Connor each deny three charges of making damaging disclosures under the Official Secrets Act.......

I caught wind of it when AP ran with the story a few hours ago.
These people are partisan leakers and this only reinforces the point.
Is that the Downing Street memo that the DUmmies are always babbling about?
What strikes me about the story is that a leaker is actually on trial somewhere!
The leftist conspiracy is international.
LOL!!!
See this?
It is beyond “conspiratorial”. It is a socialist shadow government that acts of its own accord in counter to the ELECTED ADMINISTRATIONS policies.
This was buried in a local section of the BBC News website but some AP copy came out around 5 or 5:30 tonight too on the “International Herald Tribune” website.
I think it rates more importance that it’s getting, hence a “Breaking News.”
People who are entrusted with a Secret clearance are not the Judges of what is to be de-classified.. It isnt their decision to make, when a document should be shown to the public or to someone other than it was intended for.
Secret information is always on a need to know basis. In other words anyone who doesnt need to know that information isnt privy to it, and persons entrusted to handle that information arent the arbiters of who has a need to know.
When people start passing out information that hasnt been cleared to give out ,they break the law,They break a confidence, they beak their oath.
They should be punished severely. If they cannot keep the information secret they should resign, If they divulge the secret they should be incarcerated. They are traitors.
A leaker isnt a whistleblower, he is an agent for the enemy, a spy. A criminal.
It doesnt matter whether he is a small time Government employee or a Senator. That person is an enemy of the State.
Maybe the prosecutors did not realize his motives. But anyways, since Congress is trying to run foreign policy, why not pass out pardons too.
The accused (Keogh) hopes to get the jury on his side against the “evil Bush.” That’s why he’s up there openly admitting what he did.
Kerry spied, people died.
We are at war.
Spies should be shot. That includes politicians from the Northeast with big mouths.
Oh what I would give to see Leahy and Dorgan and Rockefeller on trial for their deadly leaking. And Nurgler in prison for clear violations of the law. Sadly, where democrats are the criminals, popular opinion rules established by the sycophantic media, not the actual laws.
Notice, it isn’t in the good old USSA (Union of Socialist States of America, what we are rapidly becoming)
Bump to your post.
The leftist conspiracy is international.
Yes, include the Press in that too.
Ditto!
