Just 18 days after suffering numerous serious injuries in an automobile crash, Gov. Jon S. Corzine, D-N.J., was released from Cooper University Hospital Monday and issued an emotional statement to the public.
"I understand I set a very poor example for a lot of young people, a lot of people in general," said a teary-eyed Corzine, who was not wearing a seat belt when he was critically injured in an April 12 automobile crash on the Garden State Parkway. "I certainly hope the state will forgive me and I will work very hard to try to set the right kind of example to make a difference in people's lives as we move forward."
Corzine was driven to the governor's mansion in Princeton to continue to rehabilitate his broken left leg. He is expected to resume his gubernatorial duties from the mansion, though not immediately.
"As I said last week I'm a blessed human being. I could not be more grateful for the support I've had from all the people of the state, the family, the medical people, the people that rescued me," Corzine said. "I just want to make sure I say thank you.
The 60-year-old governor was riding in the front passenger seat of an SUV driven by a state trooper on April 12 on the Garden State Parkway. He was hurrying from a speech in Atlantic City to a meeting at the mansion between disgraced former radio host Don Imus and the Rutgers University women's basketball team, about which Imus made offensive remarks.
The governor's Suburban was traveling at 91 mph when it was clipped by a truck and lost control, slamming into a guardrail. Corzine wasn't wearing his seat belt, as required by state law.

That’s the real crime. Not wearing a seatbelt is just plain stupid.
I disagree. I think he is a perfect example of what happens when you combine speeding with a lack of seatbelt.

That he was not wearing a seat belt, which primarily threatens him, is not the issue. That his car was going 91 mph, thus putting every other driver on the road at tremendous risk, is. It’s irritating that the press doesn’t make this the focus of their inquiry.
That should do it and Corzine can feel good again.
Why is he asking “forgiveness”? He didn’t do anything to anyone. He did it to himself. He should be thanking God for sparing his life!............

I swear, just about every news account has mentioned that he was on his way to the Don Imus-Rutgers meeting. Is it really that important where he was going? Is it just another attempt to make the public aware that as a good Democrat, the governor was rushing to weigh in on that important issue?
Is it really important that he had to make a political statement about Don Imus? Isn’t it more important that he was badly injured, but that he will apparently recover?

It IS important where he was going, because it was not an emergency, and thus there was no excuse for going 91 mph. It shows, perhaps unwittingly, how Corzine (and dems in general) think they are better than everyone else, and above the law.
Asking for forgiveness is a very good thing but I wish he would have taken the opportunity to pledge that he would not speed again (or his drivers). From what I understand, all the govenors do this and to do this not only puts their lives in danger but the everyday folks, too.
I've always taken it to mean that he had his driver speed, putting his own life and the lives of everyone else on the road at risk, for a trivial piece of political grandstanding. Mentioning Imus is a smackdown for the governor, not an excuse.

I never thought of that, you are right. I agree that this shows that he was rushing to be part of that Don Imus nonsense, and was not rushing anywhere on official state business.
