NYC councilman wants ban on circulars

NEW YORK - You've heard of e-mail spam — now a New York City councilman wants to do something about menu spam, the unwanted menus and circulars that have a way of appearing on city doorsteps and under doors.

Simcha Felder has introduced legislation that would make it illegal to distribute menus, circulars and fliers to homes and apartment buildings that display a sign indicating promotional materials are unwanted.

Felder's bill calls for a fine of at least $50 for distributors that leave them anyway.

"This drives people out of their minds," said Felder, a Democrat who represents sections of Brooklyn. "You have no control over it. People are livid. If I'm responsible for the cleanliness of my property I should also have the authority to decide whether I receive the junk or not. You shouldn't have to be responsible for cleaning up someone else's garbage."

Felder said the accumulation forces property owners to clean it up or risk getting a summons from the Department of Sanitation, such as the $100 ticket his mother received this year.

There are lots of things in life that drive people out of their minds. Does that mean we keep passing government bans until we're no longer annoyed? They don't have recycle bins in NYC???

Hey councilman. Most of these places are struggling small businesses that can't afford big ad capaigns and rely on this kind of distribution for their lives.

ONE MORE WAY Democrats want to pass a law that "protects" the public while making life difficult for those without a lot of money.

I wonder if she’s related to Simcha Doblitz.

The best thing to do is compromise and offer them a table in the lobby or the laundry room. Those who wish to obey the rules can put their menus there.

Some places will still put menus under the doors. In my building, we don’t allow the deliverymen from these places to enter the bulding. You have to come down to pick up your order.

Works for us.

What are this legislatorcritter’s constituents going to do about bill-spam, the proliferation of proposed legislation?

Not a lot of which is not prolif. either ...

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for ‘our own good’ will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” — C. S. Lewis

Without those, how is the criminal supposed to know if you are home or not?

I don't mind the ones that get slipped under my door. It comes in handy if you're new to the area or looking to try something different. The ones on the car are usually no fun because I'm left with 2 options. I can litter on the street or litter in my car, neither of which I'm fond of.

That`s all they do here is ban stuff..The NY Post did a story on this a few months ago, it listed everything the council banned which was everything from foie gras (which is the liver of a duck) to aluminum baseball bats for kids.

This effin` city council bans everything except voting themselves 25% pay raise. I say we ban the city council. All they do being that they are 99% Dimocrat, is play Communists. And by the way, I like those menus. When I want take out I don`t have to search for phone numbers.

I propose a ban on lawmakers that propose too many bans.

I say we ban out of town psychopaths who run for Senator and say they are not using the office as a platfrom to run for President.

Don’t just ban the poor creatures. That would be cruel! I propose they be treated for their illness, using electro-shock therapy. One jolt session for each such bill they stump for.
