Thompson: Help Iranians Overthrow Leader
AP via Forbes ^ | April 27, 2007 | David Koenig

Fred Thompson, the politician and actor considering a White House bid, said Friday he favors helping the Iranian people overthrow the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad if the chance arises.

The former Tennessee senator accused Tehran of "playing a larger part in killing our soldiers" in neighboring Iraq.

Many Iranians don't like their government, "and I think we ought to capitalize on that," Thompson told The Associated Press. "There is a chance they may mobilize themselves, and we need to assist them if that happens."

Some public opinion polls show Thompson registering in the double digits even though he hasn't announced his political plans. On Friday, he deflected questions about a White House run.

"I have a general idea in my mind" about the timing of a decision, he said, "but I'm not discussing it right now."

Thompson and former Sen. Bill Bradley, D-N.J., spoke to about 100 guests invited by Electronic Data Systems Corp. (nyse: EDS - news - people) at the company's professional golf tournament.

Bradley, who ran for president in 2000, tweaked his former Senate colleague a couple times about the White House flirtation.

FDT keeps up THAT kind of rhetoric, they’ll be a massive grassroots campaign to draft him for the GOP nomination or something.

Who says there is popular Iranian support to overthrough the gov’t there. They seem to support I’m-a-nut-job. If there was a deep desire of the people in Iran to overthrough the gov’t ... they would have done it by now.

I believe that Fred has bought into this pipe dream about Iran’s people.

Pipe dream is right. The Iranians aren’t going to toss out Nutjob any more than the Germans dumped Hitler. I’m surprised that Thompson has fallen for that nonsense. My respect for him has gone down a notch; “Let Abdul do it” is not a statesman’s stance.

Why aren’t the President, Vice President, Giuliani, Romney and prominent Democrats saying the same thing? At least Thompson is saying this much.

I would think that many of the same things can also be said about all of the other countries of the world who are presently controlled by dictators: North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Belorussia, Sudan, etc.

THOMPSON’S NON-CAMPAIGN Fred Thompson’s unannounced candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination will go to Stamford, Conn., May 24 for the Connecticut GOP’s annual Prescott Bush dinner. “We’re obviously excited out of our minds about it,” the party’s state chairman, Robert M. Duncan, told this column. He was delighted that Connecticut had gotten the popular actor-politician ahead of Virginia’s June 2 party fundraiser. A footnote: Without announcing his candidacy, Thompson has won straw polls at the Oklahoma Republican convention, the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference, the California Republican Assembly and Georgia’s 9th Congressional District party convention.

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about: Iran is majority younger people who like the West, and you should have been paying attention after 9-11 to see just how much they were with us,and still are. ( And the word is “overthrow” not “overthrough”.)

...a couple of, I believe, key paragraphs, omitted from most AP carriers...

As a senator from Tennessee, Thompson voted in 2002 to authorize the use of force against Iraq. Whether Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction is "relevant," but more importantly, he could have rebuilt WMD or even nuclear capabilities, Thompson said.

"When he [Petraeus] tells me that there is hope, we need to take advantage of it," Thompson said in a brief interview with the AP. "We've got to understand the consequences of pulling out before the place is stabilized. Everybody wants out; we're going to be out before long one way or the other, but I sincerely hope it's somewhat on our terms and not al-Qaida's."

"but I sincerely hope it's somewhat on our terms and not al-Qaida's."

Ha! His use of "somewhat" has me sold! That was brilliant!

I know several Iranians that came to this country as refugees. They still have family in Iran and according to them there are a lot of Iranians that would assemble to over throw their government when the time is right.

We’ve been hearing nonsense like that for 30 years. It’s wishful thinking.

It’s a good start, but why haven’t we been saying this already? AND, I still would not want Iran to have the bomb, even with a new govt. Pakistan is bad enough. No more Muslim nations should have the bomb.
