It’s just awful to see our small, honorable businesses get ripped to shreds while the big guys will go untouched.

What happened to the companies that made all their own product rather than find someone else to do part of it? Does anyone know anything about Newman’s Own animal food? It is expensive and their site says it is safe.

WOW, that is a VERY strong statement. They must have really solid evidence that ANI did this, and did it knowingly or with gross negligence, to put out a statement like this. If ANI had a leg to stand on, they’d sue, but I suspect Blue Buffalo’s attorneys have already checked things out and made sure their evidence is strong enough to protect them.

On one of their dry dog adult dog foods it clearly states rice protein concentrate.

"The obvious question is "how could Blue Buffalo not know that ANI was putting rice protein concentrate into our canned food?" The answer is we trusted them."

You can't trust anybody anymore!! Hello..............this is a wake up call to all businesses that are thinking like this.

Okay...now lets "out" every executive and sales manager who participated in this scheme to defraud the consumer....

And while we test for known toxins and contaminants, we don't test for protein sources, like rice protein concentrate, especially when we did not formulate our products to contain them.

While some nut job is going to be whining that they should have tested for everything, it's just no reasonable to expect that. Even if they tried, they'd miss the one thing that ends up being a problem. They were completely reasonable in what they did. Why would you think to test for something that wasn't even formulated to be in the product in the first place? Sounds like the kind of company I'd want to do business with.

This is terrible news. For months, I’ve been feeding my dogs Solid Gold Bark at the Moon (no grain). So far they are doing really well but I hope this company doesn’t get burned by a supplier as well. They say they source their ingredients.

So while no BLUE or Spa Select canned product has tested positive for the presence of melamine, and there has been no reported illness due to any of our canned products, we simply cannot be sure of what ANI has been including in our formulas. For this reason, we have decided to remove all of our canned and biscuit products from retail distribution. While this may seem to many to be a major over-reaction, as other ANI customers will probably only recall the products that tested positive for melamine, we see this as a matter of integrity.

Well said by Blue Buffalo. This type of public excoriation should be done to all of the companies that have knowingly defrauded the public and their partners in this poisoning case.

Somebody wrote into our local paper complaining that they have tried to call the number that is supposed to be set up to report these bad foods. Their dogs are sick and lethargic and the food they use is not on the list. The hotline number constantly has a full mailbox, though.

Stop buying dog food. Stop buying cat food.
Go to the supermarket meat section, and buy the unpleasant cuts of meat: organ meat, etc.

Feed them meat.
Feed them bread, and vegetables.

Don’t give them fat-laden human table scraps, give them cooked meat and plain grains and vegetables, human quality. Liver and kidneys and the low-grades of stew meat are not expensive.

Just feed them supermarket meat and grain and vegetables and eggs until the all-clear is given on these foods. Your pets will think they died and went to heaven, you will not spend much more money, and you will have nothing to worry about.

Oh, and your pets will be healthier too. The fillers and things that get put in pet food are horrific. Take some doggie treats someday and look at the ingredients. You’ll find, maybe number two or three (remember that the ingredients are in order of quantity), a single word “meat”.
Meat.
Well, that’s a pretty broad category, isn’t it?

Now grab a can of Alpo beef, take it home, open it, and pour it on a human plate and sit there and look at it.

Look at cheap hamburger.
Look at organ meat.
Look at the stringiest stew meat you can find in a Latin market - USDA “Good” stuff.
And compare it to the Alpo.
The Alpo is “Beef”, but what the hell KIND of “beef”?
Beef lips. Beef rectums. Beef penises. Beef ligaments. Beef noses. All those parts of beef you would never want to eat.

Now look at the price of a two 8 ounce cans of Alpo.
And go look at the price of a pound of hamburger or stringy stew beef or kidneys.
It’s just not that much more.
Your dog would rather eat a pile of cooked hamburger and kidneys than a pile of rectums, pensises and noses. Really.

It will barely cost you any more. It will only cost you TIME.

Oh, and although you’d never microwave a piece of meat for YOU to eat, because it becomes tough and nasty, if you don’t want to bother with cooking up your dog’s dinner, stick it in the microwave. Nuked hamburger is better than a can of wet beef rectums. Really.

Your dog will love you, and you will not have to worry about anything.

And your vet?
Well, if you’re not frying the food in fat, he’ll tell you that feeding cooked quality meat to the dog, along with grains and vegetables, is going to be at least as good for the dog as a salty can of Alpo.

There’s the answer: organ meats cooked with cream of wheat. Fido will love you.

While I commend the company for taking such a step (and adore that they said ‘pet parents’), I would seriously have to send them a cyber pop on the head. If I owned a pet food company, I would take a little closer look at my product. Every company must have (in order to make the product) have a list of things that actually go in the product.

That said, once again I applaud them for this move.
