LESBIANS are twice as likely as heterosexual women to be overweight or obese, which puts them at greater risk for obesity-related health problems and death, US researchers said.
The report, published in the American Journal of Public Health, is one of the first large studies to look at obesity among lesbians.
Ulrike Boehmer of the Boston University School of Public Health and colleagues looked at a 2002 national survey of almost 6000 women, and found that lesbians were 2.69 times more likely to be overweight and 2.47 times more likely to be obese.
“Lesbians have more than twice the odds of (being) overweight,” the authors wrote.
This would put them at a higher risk for diabetes and heart disease, among other ailments.
“Our findings indicate that lesbian sexual identity is linked to a greater prevalence of overweight and obesity,” the authors wrote in the study, released this week.
They reviewed smaller studies that have suggested a higher prevalence of obesity among lesbians and the possible reasons why.
“The results of these studies indicate that lesbian women have a better body image than do heterosexual women,” they wrote.
But the authors said they placed little confidence in the idea that lesbians were more muscular than straight women, and thus were more likely to have a high body mass index, or BMI, while having little body fat.
High muscle mass is “unlikely to lead to classification as obese,” the researchers said.
“We reported greater odds of both overweight and obesity in lesbians and we feel confident in asserting that these differences are a result of increased adiposity,” the researchers wrote.

As an aside, many women in the sex trade are lesbians. Prostitutes, exotic dancers, porn stars, many of which who were sexually abused.
I’ve read that. I’m not at all surprised that women who experience the worst male behavior would form romantic relationships with women, instead. And overeating can be a symptom of many kinds of trauma and unhappiness.
What’s bizarre about this study, I guess, is that the authors consider obesity to be a sign of mental *health*.
Did they notice any correlation to being “ugly”?

Nah, no matter how fat a fat chick is, she can find some man to make it with her. There are guys who like 'em fat, you know. And did you ever notice that most of the fat chicks have babies with them? Those babies didn't come from the stork.
I think lesbians are fat because they can be fat. That is, their girlfriends don't mind, and being fat doesn't prevent them from having sex as it might for a fat straight person. So they don't have any incentive to go to the gym. They play games like softball that aren't aerobic.
I believe lesbians are not born that way, but opt out of heterosexual competition in large (!) part because they perceive themselves as not meeting the standards of attractiveness that they believe men insist on--and I'm inclined to agree, just from listening to conversations here on FR about "fat, ugly women." There is a tone of furious disgust I often hear--like men take the sight of an obese woman as an almost personal offence.
It is a fact of life-- many, maybe most, men have a virulently hostile reaction to overweight women. Women notice this, and either put up with it, diet, or "switch"--
I overheard a recent widow admitting that "at least he's not on my back about my weight all the time. I don't miss that." It was a rather startling thing to hear, and I'll never forget it. Imagine your wife remembering you like that.
I know, I know. Nature demands a certain hip/waist ratio to get the juices flowing.
Recently a lesbian made a pass at her at a store. Child did not know what was going on. She came and told me.
We talked about it.
When I told other younger people in their twenties the reaction was that she, but being heavy, looks like she “plays for the other team.”
Sad.
That’s just not fair to the poor kid. People make so many assumptions.
