Giuliani's Startling Departure on Civil Unions [Giuliani weaseling]
The New York Sun ^ | April 27, 2007 | RYAN SAGER

Posted on 04/27/2007 3:10:50 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

In a startling departure from his previously stated position on civil unions, Mayor Giuliani came out to The New York Sun yesterday evening in opposition to the civil union law just passed by the New Hampshire state Senate.

" Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly," the Giuliani campaign said in a written response to a question from the Sun. "In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it."

The Democratic governor of New Hampshire, John Lynch, has said publicly that he will sign the civil union law.

On a February 2004 edition of Fox News's "The O'Reilly Factor," Mr. Giuliani told Bill O'Reilly, when asked if he supported gay marriage, "I'm in favor of … civil unions."

He also said, "Marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman." Asked by Mr. O'Reilly in the interview how he would respond to gay Americans who said being denied access to the institution of marriage violated their rights, Mr. Giuliani said: "That's why you have civil partnerships. So now you have a civil partnership, domestic partnership, civil union, whatever you want to call it, and that takes care of the imbalance, the discrimination, which we shouldn't have." In 1998, as mayor of New York City, Mr. Giuliani signed into law a domestic partnership bill that a gay rights group, the Empire State Pride Agenda, hailed as setting "a new national benchmark for domestic partner recognition."

Thanks for posting that dirtboy. What a difference a few words make. It just goes to show you that veronica has an agenda—and that agenda doesn’t belong here!

I don’t think Fred and Rudy are that far apart on the issue of gays. Both against gay marriage.

Oh, horsecrap. That's just as dishonest as the earlier Rudy booster claim that Duncan Hunter and Rudy had the same position on a PBA ban despite the fact that Rudy supported Clinton's veto of a PBA ban.

Rudy pushed for gay hate crimes laws and used to favor gay civil unions.

Fred opposes special treatment for gays and opposes gay civil unions. NO COMPARISON.

Admit it. Your guy is a social liberal. It would be better if you just admitted what is blindingly obvious so you don't feel compelled to drag down actual social conservatives to somehow try and make your guy look better.

I am pointing out that Rudy's positions on certain issues...

Which positions?

The ones from 10 years ago, 10 months ago or 10 days ago?

He keeps repositioning his positions.

Marriage should be between a man and a woman. It should remain that way."

I'm glad to hear it. I'm still not voting for that nitwit.

I just don't see how any conservative can support this man. Sure he cleaned up NYC, but in doing so he showed a predisposition for certain heavy-handed tactics that only somebody with very little respect for the Constitution would endorse, and I don't want him getting a chance to do this on a grander scale. He reminds me of another politician whose biggest claim to fame is that he made the trains run on time. Sorry, but anybody who sneers at the Constitution the way Rudy does is unfit to become president.

Fred Thompson says gay rights should be left up to the states. That's called a punt. :)

Fred's a federalist. He was the only Senator to vote against uniform national blood alcohol levels for DUI. He thinks just about everything is up to the states. Which is refreshing considered how everyone else seems to be about centralized power.

No, that's called federalism. Something Rudy wouldn't recognize - the notion that power is supposed to have constraints.

I came to FR several years ago and enjoyed the dialog and discussion. It was civil and enlightening. It was refuge. Even when fellow FReepers didn’t agree, there was room for all opinions.

Unfortunately, those days seems to be gone. All I see now is a “Stop Rudy” campaign here no matter the cost. Heh, I’m as conservative as they come. And, I will not vote for Rudy in the primary. Yet, I’m also a pragmatist. And, I was directly affected by the events of 9/11 as many of my colleagues were murdered on that day. The war against Islamofascism is the ONLY priority in my decision making process at the moment regarding the upcoming elections. If it meant prosecuting the global war - in reality, the Third World War - to victory, I will vote for whoever the Republican nominee for President may be.

So, let’s not stoop to the level of the far-left and trash each other with such vitriol. Please.

As far as "dressing the part" - he wore a costume to an event.

I'm confused here. I've seen him in a couple different outfits.

Was it a one time thing, or has he dressed in drag multiple times?
