Giuliani's Startling Departure on Civil Unions [Giuliani weaseling]
The New York Sun ^ | April 27, 2007 | RYAN SAGER

Posted on 04/27/2007 3:10:50 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

In a startling departure from his previously stated position on civil unions, Mayor Giuliani came out to The New York Sun yesterday evening in opposition to the civil union law just passed by the New Hampshire state Senate.

" Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly," the Giuliani campaign said in a written response to a question from the Sun. "In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it."

The Democratic governor of New Hampshire, John Lynch, has said publicly that he will sign the civil union law.

On a February 2004 edition of Fox News's "The O'Reilly Factor," Mr. Giuliani told Bill O'Reilly, when asked if he supported gay marriage, "I'm in favor of … civil unions."

He also said, "Marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman." Asked by Mr. O'Reilly in the interview how he would respond to gay Americans who said being denied access to the institution of marriage violated their rights, Mr. Giuliani said: "That's why you have civil partnerships. So now you have a civil partnership, domestic partnership, civil union, whatever you want to call it, and that takes care of the imbalance, the discrimination, which we shouldn't have." In 1998, as mayor of New York City, Mr. Giuliani signed into law a domestic partnership bill that a gay rights group, the Empire State Pride Agenda, hailed as setting "a new national benchmark for domestic partner recognition."

WTH!? That's downright weird.

I am a female and have yet to have custom made underwear. I wonder what they are meant to conceal?

LOL

Well, some capsized their own ship and begged for a shot in the keel to sink them.

Jim graciously obliged.

“Right” was the wrong word. JR can do what he wishes. But we’ve always been one of the more tolerant message boards, until quite recently.

I do believe that we ought to be civil and that Veronica was treated uncivily.

Based on all the evidence, while one may disagree, it is not a “lie” to claim that FT and RG are not so very far apart on the issue of gay rights, at least in terms of their recently stated views.

But if you can point to something Veronica said, something specific, that was a “lie,” I’d be happy to read it.

I ain't even going near mentioning anysomething about his prostate condition. Ain't going there... not me, no....

I think that shows good judgement, his fight with cancer isn't relevant to his political positions.

However it's fair game, I've seen numerous posts relating it to his sexuality, as well as keywords added on the topic. But I don't think you'll suffer reprecussions.

Fred Thompson's fight with cancer I'd stay away from.

My impression is that Rudy does not support such abortions. In fact, they are not even supported by Roe v. Wade, which allows states to limit third trimester abortions. He’s come out in support of the recent SC ruling and has said he supports the justices appointed by Bush.

So, I don’t think it’s accurate to claim Rudy supports “abortion on demand.” Words mean things.

Veronica refused to back away from the misrepresentation in the NewsMax article.

And I ain't gonna take your claim that it wasn't a misrepresentation when you are deluded enough to belive Rudy is against abortion.

I think it’s ok to admonish her and to point out why she may have misinterpreted the article or the man. But I still don’t see how she “lied” in anyway.

There are people here who claim there is not a bit of difference between Rudy and Hillary. I strongly disagree, but I don’t think they are liars.

My gawd, Rudy has perfect ratings from NARAL and planned parenthood. He addressed NARAL - twice. He said he'd pay for his granddaughter to have an abortion.

Words are cheap. Actions speak volumes. Rudy's past puts the lie to his words. And yours.

My point was that FT supports the rights of states to allow civil unions. That’s all. My other point was that while Veronica may have ignored some context, she was not lying and did not need to be baited and driven from this forum.

I don’t know how anyone that thinks Rooty would have a chance of winning the general election could do so knowing all this weird stuff about him will come out after the nomination.

It makes no sense at all to pin your hopes on a train wreck like Rooty.

Its not just one or two things, its hundreds!

He would destroy the Republican party if he were to win the nomination.

We would have as good of a chance nominating Mark Foley or Barney Frank.

The point that FT believes that states ought to have the right to allow civil unions stands on its own. His statement doesn’t make him a “liberal” nor does it imply that there is no difference between him and Rudy on gay rights.

It simply needs to be clarified. It also needs to be clarified that it is an “opinion,” not a “lie” to claim that Rudy and Fred “aren’t far apart” on the issue.

"So, I don’t think it’s accurate to claim Rudy supports “abortion on demand.” Words mean things."

How do you reconcile that with his endeavour to secure taxpayer funds for abortions? Actions mean far more than words and while the nation's abortion rates declined 5%, New York's only dropped 1% making that city known as the Abortion Capitol of the USA, no doubt with Giuliani's assistance. That speaks volumes also.

We're all wise enough to know when government confiscates funds from taxpayers to fund anything, that thing is exploited by all involved so more funds will be needed. We're also grown up enough to realize when you make a specific "procedure" readily available rather than provide a sane alternative, that "procedure" will become "normal" behavior.
