The point that FT believes that states ought to have the right to allow civil unions stands on its own. His statement doesn’t make him a “liberal” nor does it imply that there is no difference between him and Rudy on gay rights.
It simply needs to be clarified. It also needs to be clarified that it is an “opinion,” not a “lie” to claim that Rudy and Fred “aren’t far apart” on the issue.

Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly, In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it.
there is very little difference in their positions. Marriage is between a man and a woman, civil unions are an issue for the states, and outside states shouldn't be forced to recognize them.
