Giuliani's Startling Departure on Civil Unions [Giuliani weaseling]
The New York Sun ^ | April 27, 2007 | RYAN SAGER

Posted on 04/27/2007 3:10:50 AM PDT by Jim Robinson

In a startling departure from his previously stated position on civil unions, Mayor Giuliani came out to The New York Sun yesterday evening in opposition to the civil union law just passed by the New Hampshire state Senate.

" Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly," the Giuliani campaign said in a written response to a question from the Sun. "In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it."

The Democratic governor of New Hampshire, John Lynch, has said publicly that he will sign the civil union law.

On a February 2004 edition of Fox News's "The O'Reilly Factor," Mr. Giuliani told Bill O'Reilly, when asked if he supported gay marriage, "I'm in favor of … civil unions."

He also said, "Marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman." Asked by Mr. O'Reilly in the interview how he would respond to gay Americans who said being denied access to the institution of marriage violated their rights, Mr. Giuliani said: "That's why you have civil partnerships. So now you have a civil partnership, domestic partnership, civil union, whatever you want to call it, and that takes care of the imbalance, the discrimination, which we shouldn't have." In 1998, as mayor of New York City, Mr. Giuliani signed into law a domestic partnership bill that a gay rights group, the Empire State Pride Agenda, hailed as setting "a new national benchmark for domestic partner recognition."

Having a high NARAL rating is not the same thing as “supporting abortion on demand.”

There are circumstances under which I, too, would support my daughter’s right to have an abortion.

Based on all the evidence, while one may disagree, it is not a “lie” to claim that FT and RG are not so very far apart on the issue of gay rights, at least in terms of their recently stated views.

One could be an idiot and hold that opinion, yes.

But if you can point to something Veronica said, something specific, that was a “lie,” I’d be happy to read it.

The lie is in intentionally using a quote out of context to make it appear someone said something that they didn't.

I did read that, that’s the thread I learned John McCain might be a rapist on. That vanity is worth banning over if the poster wasn’t leaving. That’s one attack on JR, a hundred or so more to go.

He’s come out in support of the recent SC ruling

Let's deconstruct that for a second... he's been opposed to the PBA ban, but he respects the Court's ruling. This could mean one of three things:

  1. He's lying
  2. He's had a sudden "change of heart" that has curiously not manifested itself elsewhere
  3. He agrees with the court that Congress has the right to pass the law, not that he agrees with it.
My money's on #3, by the way.

and has said he supports the justices appointed by Bush.

He also thinks that Ginsburg was an ideal candidate for the Court, too.

Bullcrap. You are in abject denial if you think a 100 percent NARAL rating does not equal being a very strong supporter of abortion on demand. Heck, Rudy has said public funding of abortion to poor women is a right.

“Heck, Rudy has said public funding of abortion to poor women is a right.”

More than just right.

He said it was a “Constitutional right”.

He said it was a “Constitutional right”.

And yet, he doesn't think private firearm ownership is a "right". Hmmm...

Somehow, this doesn't surprise me.

It simply needs to be clarified. It also needs to be clarified that it is an “opinion,” not a “lie” to claim that Rudy and Fred “aren’t far apart” on the issue.

If you believe Rudy's statement, I don't but a supporter would,

Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly, In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it.

there is very little difference in their positions. Marriage is between a man and a woman, civil unions are an issue for the states, and outside states shouldn't be forced to recognize them.

Oh no!

He says you can have firearms.

It’s just that he thinks it should be ‘regulated’. Which is kinda funny cause my copy of the Constitution says “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED”.

Guess he skipped over that part.

Yeah. Ain’t that sweet.

For them.

If the American people put this man in office, it will be the last feeble cry of a dying Republic.

Near as I can tell from his speech at the Kennedy center, Rooty thinks illegals have every right under the Constitution except the right to bear arms.

And he doesn’t even agree that citizens have that right.

I am a female and have yet to have custom made underwear. I wonder what they are meant to conceal?

Rooty in "custom made" women's underwear......with (ahem) "hand-sewn openings."

Ain't it a kick in the pants, though? LOL.
