Muslim holidays rejected by board (Balt., MD)

Baltimore County public school officials have said that adding Muslim holidays to the school calendars is unlawful and "irresponsible," marking another setback in attempts across the region to add the holidays.

Muslim supporters wanted schools to close for Eid al-Adha, which marks the end of the yearly pilgrimage to Mecca, and Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.

A few dozen members of the county's chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee asked for the change at a school board meeting Tuesday night.

School officials, however, stood firm by a state law that disallows public schools from endorsing any religion, saying the school calendar can include scheduled closures only for holidays that cause low attendance rates countywide.

They should just call O'Malley, he'll fix it.

Tell them they’ll be happy to add the Holidays when Saudi Arabia allows Christians to celebrate Christmas and Easter.

The public school calender is Julian. The muslim calendar is moon based. Is the school system supposed to appoint an ‘imam’ to issue fatwas regarding the start of these holidays?

Simple solution.

Go back where you came from and you can close your own schools any time you want.

Parents are free to take their children out of school as they see fit. Write a note.

Easter is on a Sunday and Christmas falls in the winter break that does not resume until after New Year’s day.

NO special honor is due.

Yep. That's the plan. And the Democratics, DUmmies, KOmmies, and HUFFies will help to speed it along.

What a joke....Muslims want American schools to close for Muslim holidays and yet, you can’t put up a Christmas tree or sing carols in school at Christmas like I did when I was a kid?....Go POUND SAND!

“Baltimore County public school officials have said that adding Muslim holidays to the school calendars is unlawful..”

Wait till the ACLU hears about this.

“Parents are free to take their children out of school as they see fit.”

The school board has said all along that any muzzie who takes off on their holiday will receive an excused absence.
When I see the words “Christmas Holiday” and “Easter Holiday” on my son’s school calender, I MAY entertain a school holiday for a religion who believes beheading is a form of entertainment suitable for video.

Sudden, unprecedented, shocking outbreak of common sense on Balmer school board. I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

There’s not! This decision was ONLY based on the fact that Christmas and Easter are not official “holidays” on the school calendar. Imagine the trouble the school board would face if it put muzzie holidays on the calendar. The muzzies would not accept a generic day off. They wanted their holidays listed.
