Girl Scout to give global warming presentation

Beth Brelje

For the Pocono Record

April 26, 2007

"It's not too late to do something about global warming. It is not too late for us to make the right moves to curb our carbon emissions and save our planet."

That is what Cadette Girl Scout Emily Paulus, 15, of Tannersville, hopes people will take away from her presentation: "Global warming simplified."

Paulus produced the hour-long Power Point program as part of her work toward earning the Silver Award, the second highest award in Girl Scouting.

The Silver Award requires 40 hours of work on a project that benefits others.

Paulus said her global warming presentation benefits others by teaching people about something they may not know.

"It's an issue that affects my generation and generations to come," she said.

Paulus became interested in the environment early, attending camp at the Monroe County Environmental Education Center and becoming a junior naturalist.

She was quite affected by Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth," saying she was completely amazed at all the research, and was shocked by the pictures of how many places would be under water if sea levels rise 180 to 210 feet.

Her presentation covers common misconceptions about climate change as well as carbon emissions and rising sea levels. Paulus has been a Girl Scout since first grade. She said it is fun and has taught her how to get along with people and make friends. She also picked up money skills through the sale of Girl Scout cookies.

Paulus earned her Bronze Award in 2004 and intends to stay with Scouting to work toward the Gold Award, the equivalent of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. She plans to pursue a career in environmental law.

How much ‘carbon’ does this event create?

Now once they’re trained to rat out their parents, the parallel to another social movement will be complete.

Why can’t the Girl Scouts be more like the Boy Scouts?

I guess her parents won’t have to worry about her borrowing the car now.

Just ask them the difference between carbon M and carbon D. They mess it up every time.

At the risk of letting my ignorance hang out, are you referring to Dioxide and Monoxide?

Why we don’t let children have any say in the political process. They are swayed by magic and fairy tales.

This is why kids aren’t allowed to vote.

She can't help it if she thought she was being dazzled by brilliance, when in truth, she was baffled by bullsh*t.

I was a Girl Scout leader until our daughter graduated high school last year. I'm still on our local leader's Yahoo group, and a month or so ago, one of the other leaders posted something about presenting programs to the girls that showed the dangers of global warming and how we need to educate people on how to change their lives so we can 'make a difference' in the climate. I replied to the group saying that Algore was full of hot air, and maybe they needed to present the other side of the story that the girls are NOT getting, mainly that, though it may be getting warmer, we humans have nothing to do with it.

Only one other leader commented on the post, and that was the other woman who is also a Southern gal like me! She's originally from Tennessee, and offered that the issue was bogus and that Algore is an 'empty suit'. Heh.

save our planet

I hope she gets her "I saved the planet" merit badge. I wish I could have saved the planet when I was a Boy Scout. Can you imagine what that would look like on my resume.

Previous Experience: Helped saved the planet.

I hope I'm not overqualified to talk to people through Jack's head.

Well, young lady, just think how many places would be under water if the seas were 1 mile deeper.

Imagine, a 1-hour-long Power Point. Even Bill Gates would be snoozing.

Is there a better alternative to the Girl Scouts?

My daughter wants to join but notice the GS has an agenda that is a little too PC for my taste.

The Girl Scouts should go door-to-door selling individual squares of toilet paper....with Sheryl Crowe’s picture on each square.

If she's a teenager, there's Exploring and Venture Scouting. Both used to be offered under the BSA, but now Exploring is under another org called Learning for Life. Exploring is more career oriented with lots of options: high adventure, SAR, law enforcement. My post back in the day was sponsored by a Nat'l Guard Artillery unit. Great fun. As far as I know, Venture Crews are pretty much all high adventure.
