Pelosi: ‘Working Women and Their Families Deserve Equal Pay for Equal Work’

Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 04/24/2007 Pelosi: ‘Working Women and Their Families Deserve Equal Pay for Equal Work’

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this morning at an Education and Labor Committee hearing on equal pay:

“I want to thank the Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller for convening this critical hearing today on Strengthening the Middle Class: Ensuring Equal Pay for Women.

“I also want to recognize the leadership of Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, a champion for equal pay in the Congress, who for 10 years has been introducing the Paycheck Fairness Act.

“Over the last four decades, we have made strides in closing the wage gap between women and men. But it has not been enough. Working women now earn about 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. The earnings for African-American women are 68 percent of men’s earnings; the earnings of Hispanic women are 57 percent of men’s earnings; and the earnings of Asian-American women are 88 percent of men’s earnings.

“Today, almost four full months into the new year, women throughout the country mark the date to which they have worked just so their wages equal the same amount paid to men in the previous year. That is because it takes the average woman 16 months to earn what men earn in one calendar year. This is not just and does not reflect appropriately the contributions they make.

“For many, closing the wage gap is not just a matter of equity, but survival. Many low-wage women workers are the source of sole support for their families. Economic equity and self-sufficiency are essential to achieving the American dream. It is outrageous that women begin the quest to achieve that dream already at a deficit.

“Working women and their families deserve equal pay for equal work and I am proud that the Education and Labor Committee, led by Chairman Miller are addressing this issue today.”

Rhetorical question, I assume, but

Because a man won’t get pregnant?

"If women are paid less for equal work, why would any employer hire a man?"

Your quote sums it up very nicely. All that needs to be said about this issue in my mind.

Much as the feminists hate to admit it, womens' pay usually reflects the choices women make in their lives. If a woman and man start out at the same salary, but she takes some time off having a baby, immediately, they are unequal, but it's neither the employer's, nor society's fault. he numbers they are using are bogus anyway, because given equal time on the job, education, etc. women and men are already equal in salary, if women don't make more.

Many women tend to choose employment that can be fluid, just in case they want to take some time off to have a baby. These types of jobs will naturally command a lower salary than those men would choose. It is a function of our freedom, which shouldn't be tampered with, just because some chicks decide it's not fair.

Never fear, kids, Pelosi’s on top of things.

The solution seems pretty simple. Reduce taxes to the point where families can afford to return to one-income support. Encourage women to get married and STAY married. Discourage welfare generations. Discourage programs that reward single-motherhood. Encourage boys to grow up and make responsible choices so that they can support their families by their income.

Oh wait - those aren't the answers that the Liberals are looking for. Those are common sense answers. Never mind. How silly of me.

WE NEED TO MAKE A GOVERNMENT PROGRAM THAT WILL PAY WOMEN THE DIFFERENCE AND PENALIZE BUSINESSES THAT DARE TO PAY ACCORDING TO MERIT!!!!

There - that's the response she was looking for.

Ever watch “Dirty Jobs”?
There are a whole lot of jobs on that show that few women do.

I’ll take less pay to avoid one of those.

Besides, I am the riches woman on Earth when my hubby and children kiss me goodnight, God Love them!

Has anybody bothered to tell Fuhrer Pelosi that if you don’t pay women the same as men, for the same job, that an ATTORNEY comes and takes all of your stuff???

Hubby was working for a company and making more money than a female coworker with an equivalent title. But he joined the company later than she had, and he negotiated for the pay. Another guy came in a few years later and negotiated for a higher rate than hubby was getting. The female squawked about it, and she got a pay raise AND a promotion despite her mediocre work. Guess who left the company? You bet.

Maybe Pelosi could start by hiring high wage female UNION employees in her and her husbands vineyards and restaurants?

Ever notice how these liberals always want us to make the changes, but they keep doing the very same thing they say needs to change?

Just recall the exemption for American Samoa on minimum wage increase, where hubby has huge interests in tuna canneries.

Hypocrites, the lot of them.

In the military they get 6, plus a 15 month hold on deploying (9 before, 6 after.) (That’s the AF - other branches may vary.)
