Pelosi: ‘Working Women and Their Families Deserve Equal Pay for Equal Work’

Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 04/24/2007 Pelosi: ‘Working Women and Their Families Deserve Equal Pay for Equal Work’

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this morning at an Education and Labor Committee hearing on equal pay:

“I want to thank the Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller for convening this critical hearing today on Strengthening the Middle Class: Ensuring Equal Pay for Women.

“I also want to recognize the leadership of Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, a champion for equal pay in the Congress, who for 10 years has been introducing the Paycheck Fairness Act.

“Over the last four decades, we have made strides in closing the wage gap between women and men. But it has not been enough. Working women now earn about 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. The earnings for African-American women are 68 percent of men’s earnings; the earnings of Hispanic women are 57 percent of men’s earnings; and the earnings of Asian-American women are 88 percent of men’s earnings.

“Today, almost four full months into the new year, women throughout the country mark the date to which they have worked just so their wages equal the same amount paid to men in the previous year. That is because it takes the average woman 16 months to earn what men earn in one calendar year. This is not just and does not reflect appropriately the contributions they make.

“For many, closing the wage gap is not just a matter of equity, but survival. Many low-wage women workers are the source of sole support for their families. Economic equity and self-sufficiency are essential to achieving the American dream. It is outrageous that women begin the quest to achieve that dream already at a deficit.

“Working women and their families deserve equal pay for equal work and I am proud that the Education and Labor Committee, led by Chairman Miller are addressing this issue today.”

I would like to know the numbers for Arab American and Indian American (not American Indian.....God this is ridiculous). I would guess they are very close to white men because they are doing the same jobs as white men.

Yea, but are women willing to work 80 hours a week, for months on end, sacrificing their weekends and their families to get ahead and obtain a good career for their families.

So is that worth more pay? I think so.....

If women are paid less for equal work, why would any employer hire a man?

Quit using rational logic! You'll just confuse the already confused.

Very good points. Let’s not forget that men, in general, do not take time off from their careers to raise children, and then come back expecting to earn the same pay for less time on the job as their male counterparts. Just because a woman is doing the same job does not mean she’s been at it for the same amount of time. Most increases in pay are the result of how long you’ve been employed at that job or for that employer.

You nailed it. The studies that gave her these numbers also stated why women get less. They settle for less. I’ve seen literally hundreds of pay negotiations and almost always the men negotiate and the women just accept the first offer. Women who negotiate fairly and intelligently are as successful as men at obtaining a better package.

If she wants to change things, champion economic classes in Jr. high and High school instead of diversity education and encourage schools to teach High school Seniors Job hunting skills including effective win-win negotiaions skills.

It’s already illegal to discriminate based on gender and I can tell you that HR departments and legal departments would for the most part be more than willing to negotiate with women at the job offer stage, it’s much easier than fending off bogus sexual harrassment and discrimination charges trumped up by disgruntled chicks.

One reason why the public schools are not better places. Women by and large love the single salary schedule. Try to establish a policy where math teachers can negotiate a higher wage than social studies teachers, and it will fiercely resisted by the unions. There is no market for rare abilities, except in the area of sports.

Someone should study publish a comparison of the wages paid by sex and position to the employees at the businesses (hotels, etc.) that Pelosi and her husband own. The last I heard, the hotel she owns doesn’t even hire union workers!

As I had to take four courses in Statistics (Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics I believe was one course name - /s)when in college I’m pretty sure I understand how stats (aka Sadistics) are used to lie with. But, thanks for the ping on the book. I’ll check it out.

It was ORIGINALLY written right after the Truman-Dewey election. That’s how old it is.........But I’m sure it’s been updated several times since..........my copy is so old it’s yellowed and falling apart..........

Don’t you know that doesn’t matter? The little people need to put on sweaters, buy tiny cars, use less toilet paper, put bricks in their toilets, use fans instead of AC, and let the Aristocracy decide whats best for them.

Yep, they do deserve equal pay. And the statistical studies show that when one adjusts for time in labor force, job characteristics, and choice of field, women do get equal pay.

Free markets work.

It is the “equal” that is soooo subjective in that comparison but it is not PC to challenge any underlying premise.
