BREAKING: Officials with the California Republican Assembly released the results of their presidential preference straw poll which occurred during their Spring convention in San Bernardino County.
The California Republican Assembly is California's largest GOP volunteer organization and works to uphold conservative values and principles in public policy. The organization is often called the "conscience of the Republican Party."
Despite not being an officially declared presidential candidate (or having an active presence at the Republican gathering), former US Senator Fred Dalton Thompson of Tennessee scored a huge upset, netting the votes of 28 CRA delegates. Tied for second place with 22 votes were California Congressman Duncan Hunter and ex-Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
The following are unofficial results, provided on-site from the convention location by CRA activists Bob Rego and Scott Folkens of San Bernardino County:
1. Fred Thompson: 28 votes
2. Duncan Hunter: 22 votes
2. Mitt Romney: 22 votes
3. Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX): 14 votes
4. Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO): 9 votes
5. (tie) Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA): 8 votes
5. (tie) Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani: 8 votes
6. US Senator Sam Bownback (R-KS): 3 votes
US Senator John McCain, Former Cabinet Secretary Tommy Thompson, ex-Arkansas Guv Mike Huckabee all recieived zero votes in the CRA straw poll. Organizers failed to include former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore.
The California Republican Assembly is expected to soon issue a press statement on the results of their convention and the non-binding presidential straw poll.
That'd be good, but I'd really like to see Thompson/Steele. Come to think of it, I'd be happy with Thompson/(any non-rino).
Good point, thanks
Not very many people in this poll either.
The only thing interesting is that Fred won even though he has “no organization”. Usually the candidates will send their organization in for polls like this, to get the media coverage. Fred’s got nobody to send, he doesn’t even have an exploratory committee. It’s all volunteers, and he won the poll over Duncan Hunter, who I’m certain has an organization in California.
Other than that though, not very surprising, except that I would have thought Rudy would do well with california republicans, what with Arnold and Rudy being the 2nd coming of the great white hope.
Well, Thompson needs to get in our get out. He’s wasting alot of candidates and our time and money. I’m getting less impressed with him the longer he takes.
Just think how Hunter would have taken that group out in this straw poll if Thompson wasn’t in it.
Exactly. But a six point spread isn’t bad, either. :o)
Hunter ping.
Fred was first with 28 votes, but Hunter and Romney were tied with 22.
I wish Fred would make up his mind as to whether he’s in or out.
Proof that more people watch network TV/movies than watch Cspan.
Where are all those posters who insistied Rudy would destroy Hunter in California?
Fred has contract obligations to fulfill before he can announce.
It’s frustrating:)
Thanks SE Mom
I understand he has contract obligations for his show, but that can't stop him from announcing. He knows whether he's running or not. Stand up and say so already.
We've been told for years, okay - months, by the rudybots that ONLY Rudy can win in CA because he's oh sooooooooooooo 'moderate'. And CA 'republicans' only LIKE 'moderates' like Ah-nold and Ruuuuuuuuudy.
(snicker, snicker)
Go Hunter!
so when fred wins a straw poll it’s irrelevant? how funny!
who are the silly 8?
He may have contract obligations, but thanks to that equal time bull, and the fact that the people associated with the show won’t want to give him any free airtime in any capacity, I’ll bet they let him out of his contract.
5. (tie) Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani: 8 votes Bwhaaaaaaaa
Hey! We’re a state that even the right wing CA Republican Assembly rushes home to watch Entertainment Tonight, and Inside Edition and all the other Hollyweird celebrity worship services on TV! After all, look at the weirdo we elected Governor with a whole lot of CA Freepers convinced he was some kind of conservative!!! Phhhhhhhht!!!
Finishing behind Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo, no less.
As much as this pleases me I couldn't help but laugh.
Rudy gives me fear and loathing all righty... Paging Neal Cassidy!
