BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist Segolene Royal are set to contest a French presidential run-off after topping the first-round poll on Sunday, Belgium's Belga news agency said.

Belga quoted first projections which cannot be published in France by law until the last polling stations close at 1800 GMT (7 p.m. British time) as showing Sarkozy and Royal would go through.

Belgium's RTBF radio station said Sarkozy was slightly ahead in the first round.

Based on the final preelection polls, Le Pen is not doing as well as expected. Sego a little better than expected and Sarko about as predicted.

Sorry, tuned in late to that segment.

Interesting that they showed some leftists spouting the crap that we heard hear about the right using the machines to shape the results.

Leftists are the same everywhere.

That would be a good result vicomte13, I would bet that Le Pen’s supporters want to have a voice, to not be ridiculed every election.

55% debt spent by the Government is not sustainable, neither is 65% of spending by Government in the economy.

But walking the streets were one would like is a attainable goal.

LATEST OFFICIAL RESULTS ON FRANCE 5

Sarko gave a magnificent acceptance speech. He has succeeded in giving voice to French concerns.

Credit Sarko with finally succeeding in putting le Pen out of business.

There was a record turnout everywhere. Particularly high turnout in regions that vote traditionally on the right, especially regions where le Pen was his strongest in thelast election.

Best thing that could happen. Le Pen's good points (about immigration, for example) were always overshadowed by his negatives.

Now French politicians can actually talk about it without being called "National Front Fascists".

Sarko gave voice to those concerns about insecurity, illegalk immigration, and violence.

Many people voted for Sarko because there was no longer a need to vote for le Pen. Their voices were heard by Sarko without the hate, racism, and antisemitism of le Pen.

It is ironic that Sego supports the admission of Turkey, as does Bush, into the EU and Sarko opposes it, yet Sarko is seen as the more pro-American candidate. Both of them invoke the name of Tony Blair.

You are so right. Sarko already got a lot of le Pen supporters. He will most likely pick up more.

UDF members voted 82% Bayrou, 12% Sarko, 3% Royal, and 3% le Pen .

It is going to be a tough slog regardless for Sarko. The Socialists will be trotting out all the boogeymen. Sego favors raising the minimum wage by 19.6%. She still supports many of the socialist party policies that make it difficult to fire people. I am sure she will try to scare the elederly about social benefits. Sarko is by far the more polished candidate, the more experienced, and the better speaker, but the socialists are like the Dems in the way they can play the politics of personal destruction. It is going to get very dirty over the next two weeks.

I agree. Very good outcome. Congratulations. Now if only conservative politicians in other European countries would learn from Sarkozy in regard to "law and order" and immigration.

Royal just delivered, or, I should say, read, her acceptance speech. Boring, flat, full of platitudes and banalities.

There will be at least one debate before the Election. No doubt in my mind who will come out ahead.

An election has never kept the left from demonizing their opponents.

Good point.

However, Sarkozy is the best bet in a long time to restore a semblance of sanity and dignity to French society. We won’t know whether it’s too late until (unless) he gets a chance.

The clear, right-left runoff is good news for us. Bayrou would just have muddled what was at stake — and won. At least against Royal, Sarko has a 50-50 chance.
