Today I purchased pasta, bread, dog biscuits, and bagels. I found myself wondering about the safety of all these items.

Please put me on your list.
Thanks.

I suspect we have the WTO to thank for us buying easily produced products from China.

Please add me to your ping list.

When this story about the Chinese connection and melamine being the suspected toxin first broke, I posted that I was not only concerned about pet food and my 3 kitties but that this and other toxins might be getting into the human food chain as well either directly or through farm animal feed and that apparently I was right and this is now the case!

I have no confidence in the FDA to ensure the safety of our food and I certainly don’t trust the Chi-coms.

This summer I plan to visit a lot of the local farmers markets and produce stands and I’m considering buying one of those vacuum food sealers or learning how to can. There are also some local farmers in my area who also sell meat and eggs. And I will definitely be on the look out for local organic farmers.

I know that some people have chosen to make their own dog food which isn’t too hard because dogs are more omnivorous and aren’t as picky as cats who are also more carnivorous. I recently switched from Science Diet prescription CD and Iams to Purina Naturals but I’m curious if anyone has any suggestions on what to feed cats other than commercial cat food.

What I want to know is what kind of idiot thought they could get away with this for long? Pet Food manufacturers should be suing their importer for this (if they were not complicit) and pet owners who have sunk thousands into saving their sick dogs and cats should sue the importer as well... and I am not a person who believes in suing for anything.

You may be correct, and old people tend to eat more of the cheaper starch in their diets... bread for example.

If we don’t get inspection control of it or don’t shut off imports- yes.

First red flag regarding China is they don’t like cats or dogs.

I don't know about cats, but they love dog. Lots of restaurants have them on the menu, don't they?

I won’t be surprised if it turns out that the first cases were in the hospital or in the ground months ago. I also won’t be surprised to find out about on FR several weeks before there is any sort of acknowledgment from the government.

Why are we importing anything related to wheat from China when we currently export it(wheat)?

Because we can buy it cheaper, import fees and all, than what we can locally. Go figure. I can't.

They sold only whole hogs. If you had a party and needed a whole hog, you would order it in advance. On the date agreed on they would cut the head off and then saw it in half. It is part of the back home cooking here in Cal.

I'm really not sure how much I clarified, but that's okay. I'm for free markets, but when the market we're buying from because it's cheap comes up and kicks us in the a$$, then it's time to reevaluate.

I was working for awhile today; ironically in the pet food business. On the way home I was listening to 'Market Watch' and how we have a $248 billion (or so) trade deficit with China. The administration is working on this, but it's a long, drawn-out affair. Anyway, it amounts to this; the Chinese are importing $248 billion/year more into our economy than we export to theirs. And one wonders; how much of this is crap, and dangerous to our way of life, in the way of foodstuffs or food ingredients?

Now, I'm not one for embargo's, or tariffs, but I think our trade situation with China needs a major reevaluation.

Great. Now I have to really look at the darn food labels. Sodium, fat, and too many additives are one thing. Now I have to worry about whether any part of the food I purchase comes from Red China.
