Muslim student gives life to save others in V Tech killings
Sky News ^ | Friday 20th April 2007 | Sky News

Posted on 04/20/2007 11:58:21 PM PDT by the scotsman

A survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre has been describing how a colleague died to protect others. Although badly injured, graduate student Waleed Shalaan distracted gunman Cho Seung-Hui to save another person from his bullets.

Waleed saved another student's life. The surviving student, who wishes to remain anonymous, told of Waleed's heroics through an email to his supervisor.

He describes how he was left uninjured after Cho's initial round of shots.

Meanwhile, Waleed had been wounded but was still alive.

However, when Cho later returned to the classroom to inspect for signs of life among his victims, the surviving student struggled to remain calm.

He believes he would have been shot dead were it not for Waleed's "protective movement" that distracted the gunman.

Cho turned and shot Waleed for a second time, killing him, before leaving the classroom.

Randy Dymond, a civil engineering professor, has said the student asked to him to tell the tale "so that the family of Waleed understands the sacrifice."

Shaalan's mother broke down when she heard Mr Dymond's account.

"He was trying to save someone else," she said repeatedly.

Dymond said Shaalan's body was taken to a Blacksburg mosque so classmates, teachers and friends could say goodbye before he was sent to Egypt for burial.'

I haven’t heard anyone say we should kill ALL Muslims.

I've seen it.

Moderators tend to delete lunatic posts like that, thankfully.

I can ping you the next time I come across one, if you wish.

I am definitely not a fan of the Religion of Peace, but many of the posts on this thread disgusting.

If it makes you feel any better, you're not alone.

We may be in the minority, however.

Perhaps a few rabbid FReepers post their hatred for
our enemy under the global identity of “Muslim”.

But globalizing all FReepers as Muslim haters is the
same as globalizing all Muslims as Jihadists.

It might have something to do with the fact that Muslims have been getting a bad rap ever since 9/11.

Many of them deserve that "bad rap" but it doesn't excuse the ugly posts on this thread.

Dallas...I lack the willpower I should demonstrate to read 230+ replies to see everyone's reaction toward you.

IMO, you're hijacking the thread.

Nobody is going to change your mind...or perhaps the million other people who share your point of view.

It's a weak attempt to create a legendary tale...starring Mohammed as the hero.

I would rather get back on point and debate the plausibility of what the anonymous claims.

I think this is a weak attempt to create folklore story. In twenty-five years he'll be William Wallace.

Wouldn't most critically wounded people scream in pain...or at least moan? These were hollow point bullets.

If he were in shock then doesn't one twitch and spasm?

A coincidence at best, IMO.

“why did American troops fight and die to liberate Muslims in Iraq from the tyranny of Saddam.
We didn’t go into Iraq to “liberate Iraqis from tyranny”; we went in because we deemed Saddam’s regime to be a threat to our national security. Period.”

Except the name of the mission is “Operation Iraqi Freedom” and Saddam is dead and we are still there fighting and dying to bring freedom to the people of Iraq.
We are spending billions to build schools, hospitals, roads, water plants, power plants, a police force and a military for the Iraqi people.

However, I know a hero when I see one.

Objection, your Honor!

Witness heard a tale. He didn't see a damned thing.

Yes it is, which is why I don't do it. I always say "some" or "many" freepers (which is accurate)- I never say all. After all, I'm a freeper, and I don't believe in hating people merely because they're Muslim.

In Egypt the president must give a decree allowing Christian churches to be built. Periodically he gives lipservce to this notion, but he never follows through.

The few Christians that live there are disappointed, but there are Christians that live there. This means conversions DO happen even in the harshest of environments. We should support these brave people. Not everyone in the Middle East is a heretic. Even Iraq has Christians.

Exactly. And most of the people we're spending so much to help are MUSLIMS. You can't support our mission in Iraq and then turn around and say all Muslims are bad and should be feared, fought or opposed. It's a direct contradiction.

“Known facts: Waleed wounded, killer returns to room.

Wrong right off — since you speculate that “A” might not even exist, you do not know if he was wounded or killed right off. Anyone besides “A” back it up ?

Doesn’t sound like America hates Muslims to me.
It sounds like America loves people, all people.

EXCELLENT POST J777!

My point exactly. But what started this controversy was the knee-jerk reaction of some people to an article that said a Muslim student might be a hero. Some people responded with an assumption that such a thing couldn't be possible - as if they think all Muslims are rotten. America as a nation doesn't believe that - which is the point of our mission in Iraq, to help the Iraqi (Muslim) people get on their feet.

My comment should have read "I am definitely not a fan of the Religion of Peace, but many of the posts on this thread are disgusting."

I hope we're not in the minority. However, it would be an understatement to say that I'm deeply disappointed in the level of discourse at this place in recent weeks. I sure hope it blows over.

And I am not saying the Muslim student was not a hero, as I have absolutely no way of knowing. I only meant to point out how the MSM will rush to embrace/manufacture pro-Islam stories on even the thinest of facts, even when the facts are non-existence. I flat don’t trust them further than I can spit.

So when they embrace the wild opinion of a person gratefully coming off life-changing trauma, and try to paint it as a fact, I’m going to call them on it.

Kudos to the Muslim kid if he sacrificed himself intentionally to save the others. But I don’t see a shred of evidence of that in this entire story. I just see the rampant desire of the MSM to trumpet every positive story about Muslims and Islam they can possibly beg, borrow or steal.

You and I are not going to be much influence to
those who choose to throw the baby out with the
bathwater.

What we CAN do is provide a safe haven for patriotic
Muslim-Americans who wish to fight indigenous terrorists.
If they percieve we hate them all, how can they extend
their hand to us without fear of it being bitton off?

You stated to another poster — “You are so filled with hate and prejudice it makes it impossible for you to find good in anyone born into the muslim faith.”

Well, the only “good” one could *ultimately* find in a Muslim — would be the action that causes him to leave such an evil and false religion. In that action I could find “good”.

Short of that, anyone who chooses to *continue* to follow such an evil religion, one which is declared *false* and a “usurper” by the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, one which is a “cult of death” — is simply choosing the pathway to *death* and not to life.

That’s about the only ultimate good that I could ever see...

Star Traveler

You listed a good example. Who knows what one would do under such duress. But if he tackled the gunman, knowing he would be shot and killed and knowing the kids had a 2nd exit to get out of the room, then OK, he is a hero.

But I agree exactly with what you said. I simply can’t believe any person would expect that distracting a murderer with a seeming unlimited supply of ammunition for a brief second for a finishing shot is going to actually be effective saving anybody’s life.

No, this is another pro-Muslim story manufactured from whole cloth based on the grateful emotional opinion of a fortunate survivor.

I am sure the kid who survived believes in his heart of heart that the Muslim kid saved his life. But at this point, I assume he is mistaken in his opinion.
