BLACKSBURG, Va. - The family of Virginia Tech gunman Seung-Hui Cho told The Associated Press on Friday that they feel "hopeless, helpless and lost," and "never could have envisioned that he was capable of so much violence." "Our family is so very sorry for my brother's unspeakable actions. It is a terrible tragedy for all of us," the family said.
The statement was issued by Cho's sister, Sun-Kyung Cho, on her behalf and that of her family. She works as a contractor for a State Department office that oversees billions of dollars in American aid for Iraq.
"We pray for their families and loved ones who are experiencing so much excruciating grief. And we pray for those who were injured and for those whose lives are changed forever because of what they witnessed and experienced," she said.
"Each of these people had so much love, talent and gifts to offer, and their lives were cut short by a horrible and senseless act."
The statement was issued during a statewide day of mourning for the victims of the worst massacre in U.S. history.
"We are humbled by this darkness. We feel hopeless, helpless and lost. This is someone that I grew up with and loved. Now I feel like I didn't know this person," she said.
"We have always been a close, peaceful and loving family. My brother was quiet and reserved, yet struggled to fit in. We never could have envisioned that he was capable of so much violence."
She added: "He has made the world weep. We are living a nightmare."
She said her family will cooperate fully with investigators and "do whatever we can to help authorities understand why these senseless acts happened. We have many unanswered questions as well."

Of course, the family will carry this for life, especially the parents. I have felt very sorry for them from the outset. They need our prayers.
The sister is to be commended for her very thoughtful and sensitive statement.
Worse, dishonors the whole race in Asian eyes.... Koreans are already considered (in Asia) inferior (by and) to the Japanese and the Chinese. I've heard them described by other Asians as "the [N-word] of Asia" only half-jokingly.
I can hear the jokes now whenever a Korean gets angry: Now, now, don't go Korean on us.....

Yes, my heart goes out to the family. Koreans are very sweet people, and the ones I know try so hard to please. How sad that these must suffer so. May God somehow give them His peace.

I have been thinking of them a lot. And one of the victims fathers was on TV forgiving Cho and expressing concern for his family. It was very touching.

Koreans have no love for Japanese or Chinese and think of them both as “the [N-word] of Asia” believe it or not.
I guess that’d be the older generations though… I haven’t been to Korea since 1979 and most people in my age group (at the time) thought that way.
Youngsters nowadays probably don’t. I wouldn’t know…

I can understand your frustration. But just think, for the most part, FR is nowhere as bad as the comments on YouTube, DailyKos, or DU.
