Pol: Shooting won't change gun laws

Printer friendly format April 17, 2007, 6:44 PM EDT

WASHINGTON _ Rep. Charles Rangel, a top House Democrat from Harlem, said Tuesday the shooting carnage at Virginia Tech won't change the nation's gun control laws.

He told an audience at the National Press Club that he didn't think the Second Amendment should be repealed and added that fellow Democrats told him the fatal shootings of 33 people Monday would not change votes in Congress on gun issues.

advertisement Rangel, who chairs an influential tax-writing committee, also took a jab at a longtime political foe, Vice President Dick Cheney, who accidentally shot a hunting companion last year.

"If you're hunting and accurate enough not to shoot people in the face, your gun shouldn't be taken away from you," Rangel said.

He said gun rights advocates are simply too influential to allow a tightening of gun control laws.

"It's a regional thing; it's a cultural thing," Rangel said, arguing that even in areas where 85 percent of the population supports more restrictions on the sale of guns, the 15 percent minority is far more active and outspoken. "It's a cult: 'Don't take my guns from my cold dead hands."'

Gun control tends to win favor among suburban voters, but it often stirs opposition in less heavily populated areas.

After the Virginia Tech shooting, the National Rifle Association, a major gun advocacy group, issued a statement expressing its "deepest condolences to the families" of the victims and everyone else affected by "this horrible tragedy."

"It's a cult: 'Don't take my guns from my cold dead hands."'

He was paraphrasing, I'm sure.

No question he is lying. He doesn’t want to surface an issue that will detract from the RATS run for the Whitehouse.

Gun control will come later.

Of course.

The only answer is to take the initiative and urge legislators to loosen concealed carry restrictions.

That would be us, guys. He may be lying, but he knows the populace disagrees with him.

He is NOT lying. He is sly like a fox.

There is NO WAY that the Dems would breathe a word about gun control. If they did, they would lose the south and several key states in the 2008 election.

We should be praying that they make that mistake — but unfortunately they won’t. There’s too much at stake for them to blow the 2008 elections over gun control. The NRA would crush them like bugs.

Perhaps he’s realizing that people are realizing that a ‘gun-free zone’ = “have at ‘em, you’re the only one with a gun.”

What we must be concerned about is the GOP making a mistake, it is entirely possible.

Yes Sleeping Beauty, you are right, that is the way it is.

Politicians will be politicians first and foremost. Once they are in office, as it was said before, they will do what they do best: LIE!

Enjoy San Diego while is not like the rest of Kalifornia!

Unfortunately, you are correct. The GOP is too full of people who think that they have to sell out the Second Amendment or who actively desire to sell out the Second Amendment. We must not support those with extremist liberal positions on gun control even if they do have an "R" behind their name.

And continually hammer the public, politicians, and everyone else over the head over and over with the reasons for loosening them.

Catch-phrases, epistemological argumentation, emotional argumentation, straw-man argumentation, red-herring argumentation, freaked-out liberal Rosie-like argumentation, bumper stickers, protest signs, magazine articles, newspaper articles, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera; eventually some of it will begin to stick and sink in.

Rangel represents Harlem, where they probably all believe one thing more than anything — that the cops should not be the only people in NYC with guns.

IOW, don’t trust a smiling enemy. And Charlie Wrangel is the enemy of freedom and liberty; just another loudmouthed New Yorker who knows what’s best for us ignorant peasants. Just like the Muslims.

"he didn't think the Second Amendment should be repealed.."

The Constitution does not confer Rights..it recognizes them. That's why many of the Founders were reluctant to enumerate them...because uneducated ding dong democrats and too many repubs think this is a democracy. They think they can repeal your Rights with a vote or worse yet that the juidiocracy can nullify your Rights with a 5-4 split.

It’s only an admission of his recognition that gun control is a loser issue for the democrats that cost them dearly in 2000 and 2004. But don’t worry - Rangel knows there is plenty of time for the disarming of the American people if the democrats win the White House in 2008.
