Amtrak police have arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of assaulting a Capitol Corridor engineer who was dragged from his train and attacked with rocks and bottles.
Vernae Graham, an Amtrak spokeswoman, said the boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was caught shortly after the attack and arrested Tuesday. Another juvenile who was also held for questioning was released, she said.
The engineer was attacked after a group of youths stood on the tracks and halted the train Monday around 10:15 p.m. The engineer opened a door when a conductor was threatened by the group, authorities said.
Amtrak police are continuing to investigate the attack and are searching for four to six more suspects. The motive for the assault remains under investigation, Graham said.
The attack occurred as Capitol Corridor train 546, which started in San Jose, passed through West Sacramento and was nearing the end of its run in Sacramento. The train was running slowly because of reports of trespassers on or near the tracks as it approached the I Street Bridge across the Sacramento River.
The engineer stopped when he saw five to seven juveniles standing on the tracks, and the conductor stepped off the train to clear the tracks, Graham said. When the engineer saw the crowd threatening the conductor, the engineer went to help and opened the train door. He was dragged from the train and attacked, she said.

illegal aliens?
What is next, ban rocks and bottles?
This practice needs to stop..........
It sounds like punk kids/ gang members to me. Join the NRA. Are we victims in our own land? I think not.
Those are electric diesels, correct? GE makes a fine mini-gun, that I’m sure could be adapted to fit a locomotive. This should present a few problems to any troublemakers on the tracks.
in a more enlightened era, they would have been shot as train robbers.
The politically correct term is “French youths.”
Shame on you for suggesting such a thing - however I do believe rocks and bottles should be registered....../ sarc
Those wacky yutes.
How absurd these kids can commit savage acts of violence but they need to be “protected” by not having their names released.
This is a scary story. I don’t understand though if this wasn’t a regular stop, how could a conductor have been threatened. I thought all the train doors were kept closed. When it began to look like an attack, they should have just taken off. Maybe the conductors and engineers ought to start carrying tasers at least.
Thugs. They should be treated as such. Welcome to jail.
It’s the Engineer’s fault for getting in the way
of those innocent rock throwing young people
were simply out to have a good time. / sarc
Hmmm...if the train had kept moving at, say, 5-10 mph, I bet the “yutes” would’ve gotten out of the way!
I rode a train from Boston to Florida a few years ago. It was hell. the crime on the train and around the train was unbelievable. Took me through the lousiest parts of every city too.
Funny in Maine recently I heard that the Portland to Boston run is an unqualified success. The entire thing is supported by grants and federal monies and would be dead on the vine with them.
It competes directly with immaculate buses in our area that go directly where a passenger wants to arrive, the airport or South station.
Sometimes leftists make no sense with my moneies.
