Conservative Republicans Starving for a Thompson Run
WASHINGTON POST ^ | April 19, 2007 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 04/19/2007 6:46:51 AM PDT by kellynla

Everywhere Fred Thompson goes these days, he seems to be followed by inflated expectations.

Those waiting outside the Capitol Hill Club yesterday for the not-quite-yet presidential candidate to arrive counted 35 House Republicans entering the building to meet with him. One participant, Rep. Walter Jones (N.C.), reported that there were 40 in the room. Another, Rep. Patrick McHenry (N.C.), upped the figure to "45 to 50." Then the organizer, Rep. Zach Wamp (Tenn.) came out. "I think the number was 53," he said. "Between 50 and 60."

However hyped their numbers, the conservative lawmakers who came to hear the actor cum senator cum actor were of one voice when they spoke of Thompson as a possible white knight. To hear them tell it, the current crop of Republican presidential candidates has left them variably famished, parched and suffocating.

"People are hungry for leadership," said Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.).

"People are thirsting for a candidate that checks all the boxes," Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) reported after meeting Thompson.

"It was a breath of fresh air in the room today," added Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.).

So is Thompson running?

Fred’s big on rooting out corruption. That’s what he was trying to do.

I just *knew* that lefty Milbank would get snarky. He must be acceptable at CNN and with Keith Olbertheedge.

Since you’re not likely to vote for ANYONE short of Ron Paul or MAYBE Duncan Hunter...I won’t worry about your opinion.

Dana Milbank’s piece is dripping with hatred of Thompson and all things conservative - she barely tries to conceal her contempt in this article

>”Actually, Thompson looked old and sallow as he faced the cameras for a few seconds.”<

I’ve noticed this in other photos of him. He does not look well. (Prayers for Fred going up).
There is another candidate running who comes across clearly and concisely with well thought out statements, and a firm conservative base. That man is Duncan Hunter.

MB, is CFR a deal breaker for you? Not for me. Taking away guns, government financed abortion, homosexual marriage, etc ARE deal breakers for me.

Again, if you dislike him and won't vote for him because of CFR, then your vote isn't very well informed anyway.

I just ask that you look at the entire picture. I don't like CFR either, but like the other poster suggested, FDT has 'backed away' from it. And, it will be moot soon anyway...(hopeful thinking). JMO

What are your reasons for not supporting Thompson? And why do you support Duncan Hunter (via your tag line)?

I sincerely want to know to become a more informed voter. If you know something that I don't know about FDT, please let me know. Duncan Hunter??? I agree with every position on his web site. The problem...HE CAN NOT BE ELECTED!!! Not MHO.

I don’t support Fred Thompson because I suport Duncan Hunter. I am impressed with Hunter’s record. I am not impressed with FT’s record. Sorry, but that’s the way it is. If you find a post by Ultra Sonic 007, click onto his name to read his profile page. A wealth of information on Duncan Hunter there. You can also log onto Go Duncan Hunter ‘08. That is Hunter’s website. His speeches can be seen on U-Tube. Also, watch the Republican debates on MSNBC on May 3. Then make up your own mind. :o)
P.S. No one can win if voters have the attitude that they can’t win. But, as in Reagan’s case, if the grassroots gets solidly behind a proven conservative candidate, HE CAN WIN!

"People are hungry for leadership," said Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.).

"People are thirsting for a candidate that checks all the boxes," Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) reported after meeting Thompson.

Must have been lunch time.

That said, Sue Myrick is easily the most conservative member of the North Carolina delegation, and she carries some weight with North Carolina conservative activists.

I appreciate your loyalty, but, Duncan Hunter still will not win. As I said, I have been to his web site and I agree with him. I like Newt too but like DH, he CAN NOT WIN EITHER! Sorry. I tell you what, IF DH is the republican nominee, I’ll change my screen name to WileyHunter...and you change yours to FredsDoll if he is. What do ya think?

Nice talking to you,

WileyPINK

“Both good speakers. Not really to separate them in regards to credentials. I don’t know...”

I have heard that Obama really sucks at giving interviews, there was a DUmmie Funnies a while back, that was about a bunch of DUmmies going nuts over how bad Obama sucks at giving interviews, he just can’t talk off the top of his head, he needs a script.
