Everywhere Fred Thompson goes these days, he seems to be followed by inflated expectations.
Those waiting outside the Capitol Hill Club yesterday for the not-quite-yet presidential candidate to arrive counted 35 House Republicans entering the building to meet with him. One participant, Rep. Walter Jones (N.C.), reported that there were 40 in the room. Another, Rep. Patrick McHenry (N.C.), upped the figure to "45 to 50." Then the organizer, Rep. Zach Wamp (Tenn.) came out. "I think the number was 53," he said. "Between 50 and 60."
However hyped their numbers, the conservative lawmakers who came to hear the actor cum senator cum actor were of one voice when they spoke of Thompson as a possible white knight. To hear them tell it, the current crop of Republican presidential candidates has left them variably famished, parched and suffocating.
"People are hungry for leadership," said Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.).
"People are thirsting for a candidate that checks all the boxes," Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) reported after meeting Thompson.
"It was a breath of fresh air in the room today," added Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.).
So is Thompson running?

I don’t understand conservative enthusiasm. He supported McCain-Feingold CFR, which was the worst single piece of legislation passed in the last 20 years.

Are you on crack?? McCain AUTHORED CFR! And Giulani would have backed it wholeheartedly. At least Thompson has backed away from it. Besides, CFR will be moot shortly, no one is going to follow it, the money always squirts around the sides.
I don’t recall Dana pressing for specifics from Obama, or Edwards , or Hillary?? I don’t think the “We’ve got to come together etc etc” blather coming from those three constitute specifics. The MSM is getting nervous, you can feel the fear of Fred.

Didn't say I liked McCain or Guiliani. Frankly, I think all three of them suck eggs. (I would have a very hard time pulling the lever for McCain, even as against HRC--and I really dislike the idea of HRC being president.)
Suggest you read my post again. In it, I wondered why conservatives were all googly-eyed over Thompson, given his support of CFR.
The CFR vote was a fundamental "tell" for our politicians. Any politician who thinks it's a good idea to put citizens in jail for critizing elected officials 59 days before an election has a very serious judgment problem.
"Backing away" doesn't do it for me. I would prefer to hear something like: "How could I have been so stupid as to vote for CFR? I promise never to do anything like that again. If elected president, I will actively support the repeal of CFR. I now understand that permitting citizens to criticize elected officials is at the very core of a free republic and that without free criticism of elected officials, a totalitarian state is almost inevitable."

Fear of Fred? You must be joking. The MSN touted Mcpain in 2000 to derail Bush. Now they push Fred who shows a 80% don't know enough/no opinion in the polls. I'm sure Fred is a fine guy but President? Give me a break.

Actually, I like Fred, but he does look old and sallow, especially in photographs. I wonder how well that’s going to play up if he faces a younger, more vibrant Obama, for instance.
On one hand, you have grumpy grandpa. On the other, a vibrant youngster. Both good speakers. Not really to separate them in regards to credentials. I don’t know...
I agree-I do not see Fred going far, he’s an empty vessell with many projecting their hopes into that. Maybe he’ll come out ahead, but I have my doubts.
Obama might recite speeches well but he couldn't even handle the softball question Larry King threw at him.
Obama is an empty suit.
Maybe one of the Thompson Ping List Moderators could keep an "MSM Hit Piece Meter" for Fred. They are definitely getting more frequent.
- He fought McCain on the more bad parts of the bill
- He later conceded that it didn't turn out as intended and should be scrapped or modified
- Bush should have vetoed it anyway
- Giuliani supports it in its entirety
Has has since said it (his vote) was a mistake. He is for, a way to get big special interest money, out of the political process, which we all know, has a corrupting influence, but CFR was bad law.
I'll take a guy that flat out owns up to his mistakes, rather than one trying to dance around them.
Must be hell for whoever has to live with the author of this claptrap.
