Chemical Found in Second Pet Food Ingredient, Recall Expanded

...

The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate wheat gluten used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.

Both ingredients were imported from China, though by different companies and from different manufacturers.

A lawmaker said Wednesday the Chinese have refused to grant visas to FDA inspectors seeking to visit the plants where the ingredients were made. An FDA spokesman later said the visas were not refused but that the agency had not received the necessary invitation letter to get visas.

"It troubles me greatly the Chinese are making it more difficult to understand what led to this pet food crisis," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press after meeting with the FDA commissioner, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.

A message left Wednesday with the Chinese Embassy in Washington was not immediately returned.

My dogs are very happy to have a chef working overtime to make their homecooked meals.

Having been to China ... I can imagine what their plant looks like - safety and sanitary conditions there will most likely appall any rational person. They don't care. They just want the $$$. They don't understand that we LOVE our pets.

So, stop imports of any food products from China. We can’t allow any deadly food products, from any countries.

Why import wheat anyway? I guess we are still paying farmers not to grow any/

What is ludicrous is Science Diet is making their food in Kansas (the wheat belt) with wheat imported from China.

I’m going ot have to dig up my recipe book in storage. Long story ... but till we upgrade this kind of stuff is there. I used to boil chicken for them but beyond that I haven’t made too much for them.

Meanwhile us pet lovers, sweat it out and scramble to find stuff that isn’t on the recall list.

Friends recommended a brand from a small manufacturer called, Chcken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. I know, strange name! They sell both dog and cat food. My sister switched her cat from Iams (which was on the recall list) to Chicken Soup, and it got the cat's seal of approval. It was cheaper than Iams too!

Can you imagine if it was in the human food chain. Would they act the same way? My guess is that they would, and yet the globalists in our government continue to look the other way.

They cannot be trusted to produce safe products if they won’t even allow our inspectors in to see their pet food companies.

Amazing; these pet food companies using ingredients that - apparently - fall outside the boundaries of our regulations; and it appears; are not inspected by anyone. . .from 'our side'.

I suspect that many animals; and not just as of recently; have been victims of 'whatever' from the ingredients sold to them from China. . . .which, it appears; are not inspected as well; once they arrive at their destination; and before they are blended into whatever brand of dog food.

Have yet to hear the resounding alarm call from Peta. . .re China and their pet food preparation. . .but then, perhaps I missed it.

Inside Edition had a story on homecooking last week, it is still on their website with the recipe -- showed the lady feeding to her cats and dogs and they were lapping it up -- I've fed homecooked and raw long enough to see the lady in the show knew what she was doing....

A lady vet testified last week before Durbin's committee that it was pretty stupid that people think they cannot cook for their own pets but can cook for their families.... I was impressed that a vet actually came forward and admitted what many of us know..

For people uncertain about how to homecook there is a yahoo group dedicated to this run by a animal nutritionist... several of her books are available on sitstay.com.

I read a story posted here a week or so back that said the FDA had alerted the CDC to keep their eyes open. It wouldn’t be the first time Chinese food had killed people. I shudder to think what was being fed to Iraqi children under sanctions.

Nine Lives wet food and Purina dry food. So far no problems.

Unrelated; but one of mine has had sinus problems, on and off, for about a year. He gets congested and develops an infection in his sinuses. He’s pretty old so when he’s been sneezing heavily he get’s nose bleeds. Then he blows bloody snot all over the place. It’s like living with a short hairy Gene Simmons.

We’re trying different antibiotics to fight the infection and keep him as healthy as possible. When they get to their upper teens there’s not much more you can do.

After all of this, I started researchin dog foods and realized that most brands, including Science Diet, are crap.

I have switched to Innova Evo. I would suggest everyone to do some research.
