CNN: Oh boy! Another tragedy!!! Yippee!
The Priestly Pugilist ^ | 4/18/07 | Priestly Pugilist

10:50 AM 4/18/2007 - Yesterday I was at the counter of the Sunrise Diner, where I often take my meals, seated next to one of Allentown’s finest. Now, the counter at the Sunrise is divided into two halves, one smoking and one not. It doesn’t matter to me except that the nonsmoking half is closer to the soup and salad bar, so that’s where I usually sit. Each half of the countor has its own TV; unfortunately, the smoking half gets to watch Fox News, while the soup hounds and nonsmokers have to watch CNN. Isn’t balance a beautiful thing?

Now, Allentown is a more or less homogenized town. Once in a while you’ll run into the odd brainwashed union thug who’s a democrat like his father before him (and his father before him); but, for the most part, all radios are tuned to Rush from noon to three. So, anyway, I’m sitting next to the same member of the local constabulary I always sit next to, both of us being soup hounds, and both of us starring in stark disbelief at CNN as they politicized the shooting at Virginia Tech. When they ran with their cameras to the first gun store they could find, both the constable and I had the same reaction: This poor slob only knows he’s getting his ugly mug on TV; he doesn’t care that he’s been shanghaied into maligning his own industry. By the end of lunch, CNN couldn’t utter the word “Virginia” without adding the qualifier “home of the NRA.”

For normal, clear-thinking, well-adjusted people like us here in Allentown, the next three or four months will be excruciating, as the gun control drum will be beaten to death again. And it won’t stop there. One Dem lawmaker has already made an attempt to link the whole thing to national health care. How long before someone decides it has to do with global warming? And isn’t it all George Bush’s fault anyway? Even the more sedate will not be able to resist the temptation to bloviate on the necessary “healing process” required, spurred along by that fiction of pop-psychology known as “closure.”

As you know, your Priestly Pugilist doesn’t watch the news at home (cf.: 3/6/07, 3/3/07 and 10/10/06). If I want soup for lunch, I have to, and it always leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I don’t need to know CNN’s interpretation of the universe around me in order to pray for the souls of the victims and the consolation of their families, which is pretty much all I can do. And I don’t need much information to do that. But, then again, I have a life and a job. For those of you with no lives or no jobs, CNN’s got all the info you need to keep your pea-brain occupied - if you can tear yourself away from Oprah, that is.

I saw Fox News interviewing the gun store owner that sold him one of the guns. He was sitting in his car with sun glasses on during the impromptu interview. I hope that poor guy doesn’t get raked over the coals. I don’t believe he did anything wrong but that doesn’t matter in these times. The libs will turn him into a monster.

The left is salivating at the thought that now they have an excuse to move one step closer to seizing all legal guns from law-abiding citizens.

I hope that poor guy doesn’t get raked over the coals - Didn't a store owner get busted a few years ago after selling a weapon to some monster that killed people?

Never forget that the left is the culture of death. They celebrate deaths of servicemen, babies butchered, er aborted at birth, and mass homicide victims. Death gives leftists happy feet.

An armed society is a friendly society.

We would not become a nation of “wild west shootouts”.

The authorities are supressing details (as always). IF this is a stateside “One Man Beslan Massacre” then it is an act of terrorism.

Our national ‘militia’ of citizens should be permitted to defend the homeland. Not sit there as lambs for slaugther while the Keystone Cops “figure it out”.

Too much of law enforcement seems to be focused on revenue tickets and trials for repeat offenders (drug crime, theft, gang activity, etc.). To PROTECT and Serve has gone away (and the NJ Supreme Court has said so, that you have no right to police protection or response).

I wouldn’t doubt it—seems like I’ve heard of that happening before.

Yeah, lower taxes attract them, then they proceed to raise taxes to pay for all their pet welfare programs, then move on to some other Republican stronghold to suck it dry. Anyone see "Independence Day"?

Oh yeah. You are right. I did see Independence Day too. Man the problem is that they seem to reproduce like roaches...and they believe in abortion. Go figure.

revenue tickets

I went to Virginia Tech for a year back in the mid 70's. I lived off campus in an apartment with my brother and a grad student he knew from ROTC. One morning I was going down this long street from the apartment headed to class, and a Blacksburg cop was waiting at the bottom of the hill. I rode the brake down the hill, and as I approched the police car his hand came out the window and waved me over. I watched my mirror as the cowboy boots came out of police car, followed by the officer who adjusted his Stetson and shades. He strode up to my drivers side door and said "Where's the fire". I said, "Where's the donut shop?" I knew I was getting a ticket, so I decided if he was going to be a wiseguy, I would too. When my Mother, who was the County Court Clerk in Appomattox, heard the story, she gave me an earful.
