THIS is the face of the girl who may have sparked the worst school shooting in US history.

Eighteen-year-old Emily Jane Hilscher was one of the first two victims to be identified in the Virginia Tech massacre, along with 22-year-old Ryan Clark.

The pair were neighbours in rooms 4040 and 4042 on the fourth floor of the West Ambler Johnston Hall dormitory where a gunman began the first of 33 campus shootings on Monday morning just after 7am, US time.

According to his roomate(see article in NY Times) this guy was a loner to the point of avoiding all eye contact. I can’t believe he ever had a girlfriend in the normal sense. I bet this poor girl said a few kinds words to him and thus became an object of obsession.

Or just maybe, this was the girl that grabbed the would-be murderer by the arm and asked where was he going with those guns and that knapsack full of ammunition...

I guess until the facts come out, we can dream up all kinds of scenarios.

I thought English majors in that kind of a situation were supposed to just get drunk and read Hawthorne.

What I don’t understand is why these crazy people that are bound and determined to commit suicide... don’t do it first and not take anyone with them.

That makes sense. Or she may have been kind to him. Her friends say she was very friendly and outgoing.

Yes. It just aint right publishing her picture, even if she is dead. Her family has to look at that in the paper with that dumb-assed headline it isnt right. They should be ashamed.

Yes, the gunman was the cause, and was evil. No question. The FOX ticker also stated he had a history of stalking women. This lovely girl may have been one of them, and not have been a girl fiend, anywhere but in his mentally disturbed imagination. The man was on meds! Meds that are known to in some cases, causes elevated violent tendencies and suicide. The blame rest solely on the shooter.

Hawthorne's rather good for the purpose, especially his short stories. But Stevenson's Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde is the best, because the text reminds one to drink every time it mentions alcohol, which is often . . . and a plus when one is so sloshed one forgets the bottle is there.

I really doubt that they had any kind of boyfriend/girlfriend relationship from the description of his personality from his roommates. The assumption early on that it was his girlfriend and that it was a jilted lover or whatever was way early. Its more likely since he lived nextdoor that he developed an obsession with her and was jealous and insulted that she dated others, and she probably had no idea he thought about her.

And in hindsight, had they known it was an obsessed weirdo nutjob type and not just an angry boyfriend domestic dispute they may have sought after him more or done more to secure the campus.

She’s as much to blame as Jody Foster was when Reagan was shot. That first sentence just enraged me.

After reading the article, I think Emily and Ryan (the RA) were neighbors and Ryan was called there to diffuse the situation.

Ahh... I hear the echoes of that victim blame that I had thought was a thing of the past...but rears its ugly head every once in a while still.

She probably smiled and said hi to him a couple of times while passing in the hall. From that, he built a fantasy world.

Reports I have read said she had just been dropped off by her new boyfriend. Probably his car was seen leaving the area around the time of the murders made him a “person of interest”, and he was stopped by police.

Every guy has been trapped in the “friend zone” with a cute girl at one point. Unfortunately it was all the trigger a latent psycho like Cho needed.

“I just posted the following on the newspaper comment section.

This is about the most base article I have EVER seen. This young woman was the love of her parents’ lives. She was their flesh and blood, her life has been snuffed out before it began, and your newspaper has the nerve to print this idle speculation??? There is no indication she was anything more than the object of a lively imagination. Of all the club-footed, ham-fisted open and obvious attempts to take advantage of and profit from a horrible, tragic circumstance, THIS ARTICLE IS THE BEST EXAMPLE THUS FAR. I hope bankruptcy is in your future from lack of interest in your sleazy rag.”
