Blacksburg, VA – Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement:
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the Virginia Tech University community, and to the families of the victims of what appears to be one of the worst mass shootings in American history.
"Details are still forthcoming about what motivated the shooter in this case to act, and how he was able to arm himself. It is well known, however, how easy it is for an individual to get powerful weapons in our country.
"Eight years ago this week, the young people in Littleton, Colorado suffered a horrible attack at Columbine High School, and almost exactly six months ago, five young people were killed at an Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania. Since these killings, we've done nothing as a country to end gun violence in our schools and communities. If anything, we've made it easier to access powerful weapons.
"We have now seen another horrible tragedy that will never be forgotten. It is long overdue for us to take some common-sense actions to prevent tragedies like this from continuing to occur."

And if anyone cared, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris used guns that were banned under the then-current Assault Weapons Ban.... Worked well didn't it?
I see the Brady bunch wasted no time spewing their crap yesterday. As I have said on another thread, there are 30 dead after trying it the way these a$$hats want it.

Many reporters don’t know proper gun terminology. One of them called a normal pistol magazine a “High capacity clip”. Many reporters are saying that full auto weapons and “Assault Rifles” were also on the gunman during the shooting. Those reporters are total idiots.

The daughter of one of our friends from church is a sophomore engineering student at Tech. We were worried sick about her until her father told me last night that she is OK. Same story for two of my co-workers that have children at Tech. We're breathing a little easier now. But that doesn't change what has happened, and the Virginia General Assembly had the opportunity last year to do something that could've prevented it or at least mitigated the death toll.
Virginia is a "shall issue" concealed carry state. That means if you are not legally or mentally prohibited from owning a firearm the state must issue you a permit to carry a concealed weapon upon your request, no other justifications are required. Virginia Tech however has an absolute "no guns" policy that states that if a student is found on campus with a gun they will be expelled, and a faculty member will be fired, even if they have tenure. Last year a student that has a valid concealed carry permit issued by the state (having met all the requirements; thorough background ckeck, training, fingerprinting, and paying fees for both the permit and the training) was expelled after it was discovered he had a gun in his car. His legislator submitted legislation that would prohibit Virginia Tech, and all state colleges from denying permit holders their right to carry. The legislation died in committee, and by extension all of yesterday's victims too. Needless to say, if just one armed permit holder had been in either one of these locations on campus, they could have put an end to this before over 30 people were killed.
In fact, Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." How do you think the parents, students, faculty, and visitors feel now knowing that their beloved college and their elected leaders have decreed that they are not worth being allowed to protect themselves.
But alas we live in a politically correct, namby pamby, nanny state culture that assumes that the police are going to protect us, when the supreme court has ruled numerous times that they are under no obligation to do so. Let's face facts, the police only come after the fact. They can't do anything until after a crime has been committed. But still our legislators and college board members have divorced themselves from reality, and have adopted "feel good" measures that make it look like they are doing something positive, when in fact they are creating all of the necessary conditions for what happened yesterday.
The shooter was a student,. He knew the rules concerning guns on campus and could assume that he would not face any resistance from his victims, who would simply follow the rules. What the college, and the state by association has done is to disarm the victims, and create an environment that allowed the murderer to do what he wanted without anyone being able to stop him. The blood of all of these victims is of course on the hands of their killer, who at this moment is suffering the eternal torture of Hell, but the guilt is also shared by the governing board of Virginia Tech, and the General Assembly members who bowed to their pressure and let this bill die.
Think about the real consequenses the next time you hear some "do-gooder" politician offer up "common sense" gun control legislation. Think about what they are really saying. That you or I do not have a right to our lives, that we are not important enough to be allowed to defend ourselves, and that they only want what is "good for the children". Think about the 30+ children that are no longer alive because of their actions, and remember their names.

My favorite was this morning when a CNNhN reporter said the gunman had a 9mm pistol and a 22mm pistol.
Feel-good stupid people never learn. I grew up in a house w/guns....kept in an unlocked hall closet and never felt the need to go on a rampage. I got am air rifle when I was 10 years old, dad taught me to shoot his 22 rifle....wouldn’t let me learn about shot guns though...the kick back, he said, was too rough for a girl. LOL

The best those idiots can hope to achieve is to make all legal gun ownership go away...something that can make only the retarded, the functionally moronic, very young children, victims and losers high on drugs happy.
