The National Rifle Association joins the entire country in expressing our deepest condolences to the families of Virginia Tech University and everyone else affected by this horrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.
We will not have further comment until all the facts are known.
The slimiest media (most of them) and the slimiest politicials (McCarthy and FeinSwine) used it for the Blood Orgy Dance, but -- suprisingly and to their credit -- most other parties have been silent on gun control.
I just rejoined the NRA after letting membership lapse for years....
A lot of the local media in Boston is (no surprise) blaming the NRA for allowing shootings like this to happen. Because, according to them, they are a special interest group who are “anti-American” because they oppose the government on gun control.
It’s enough to make you sick!
Any time a firearms-related thread is created on FreeRepublic, please be sure to add the "banglist" keyword to it so that interested FReepers don't miss it.
Let Freedom Ring,
***Smart move by the NRA. They will need to be out front on this issue soon, though.****
And this is why we ALL need to be members of the NRA.
"Dumped Ex-Boyfriends Murder Innocent People"
I just got my membership packet in the mail yesterday. I joined at the most recent gun show here in Yuma.
Their black baseball cap with `NRA’ in gold letters is a very nice lid.
This is a mistake. The gun grabbers are not waiting, and we are operating after they get to have first say, as usual.
If any studient in either of those buildings had been allowed to carry a firearm, the casualty count could have been much less, even zero.
This is life and death, and the NRA needs to quit playing fair since the enemy is not above shooting for the testicles.
Time for new NRA leadership?
Me too - just now.
I have my problems with the NRA, but we're going to need the 800lb gorilla to fend off the upcoming attacks on the 2A.
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
—Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria in On Crimes and Punishment (1764).
Respectfully, I think V-Tech is negligent in so that they barred the people (administrators and employees) on campus from exercising their civil rights and put them at risk. I hope someone sues the living s@#$ out of them for this offense!
A .22 caliber cannot penetrate a text book for sure and a 9mm is considered a bare minimum as a conceal carry firearm. (9mm is not that powerful of a weapon) As a matter of fact I highly doubt a 9mm would get through a one inch text book, lest a back pack filled with books. These kids had the tools to save their lives; they just did not know how to use them! This nut could have been easily disarmed had someone had the appropriate training.
To All: before any real discussion can take place one must acknowledge a few facts.
1. Evil does exist!
2. In an open society YOU must take responsibility for your own safety.Katrina and 911 has taught us the government is incapable of providing any amount of real personal protection.
3. The police are NOT legally bound to protect you. Go ahead and try to sue a police officer or municipality after you have been victimized. The speed at which that case will be thrown out of the judicial system will astonish you.
4. We live in an open society. This is going to become even more so if the ruling elite in this country have it their way by easing migration (their term) across our southern border. This brings me to my next point
5. Has this country stemmed the flow of illegal drugs into this country? No, they have not. How many guns could enter this country through our porous southern border and find their way into criminals hands? Now, if we took away the right of law abiding citizens to arm themselves, what do you think we would then have?
Cute little NO GUNS ALLOWED stickers on doors will not stop evil!
Did anyone see the amount of firepower that showed up after the shooting stopped my point exactly?
Evil must be met with force, period! To think otherwise will cost you your life.
I think this was the worst time to have this happened not to say there is every a good time for this to happen, but having a Democratic congress is going to make it easy to pass legislation for gun control and if President Bush vetos this bill it will be pretty ugly I suspect because of the way the media will portay it. The Democrats will say something like this will help your university children survive four years and play on the parents fears. Yes I do see this coming...I know some will call me crazy for being so negative but I just have this feeling in my gut that they will spin it this way and President Bush will be made to look like a monster. Obviously I hope I am wrong but I have witnessed the media before. I bet you all want me to call for a psych eval now huh? lol.
Hee’s an idea for the leadership: Offer a training course for citizens in how to deal with terrorist situations, shootings, emergencies, riots, etc. Include fire arms training, first aid, survival techniques, emergency planning for facilities, communications techniques and so on. Link it with local law enforcement. There could be multiple levels of training (green belt, brown belt, black belt). Goal should be to get 100% of our citizens trained in at least the basics, whether they are in a nursing home, an elementary school or work in a skyscraper. Citizens need to be prepared and be accountable for their own survival instead of playing the vicim and blaming the police or the government for their plight. Terrorism and nutballs are going to be long-term threats to our society and we need to face up to it. The NRA can assume a leadership role in this effort.
How absolutely droll of her yet she must believe in those rights at least for herself, considering she is licensed to carry a concealed weapon in California.
She was down the hall when Dan White murdered Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk. She witnessed firsthand how useless the police are in preventing murder-in-progress. Mayhaps that is why she decided it was worthwhile to arm herself.
But you and me? We are fodder in every sense of the word.
If the NRA has any brains they won’t try and capitalize on this tragedy.
