As Jews worldwide honored on Monday the memory of those who were murdered in the Holocaust, a 75-year-old survivor sacrificed his life to save his students in Monday’s shooting at Virginia Tech college that left 32 dead and over two dozen wounded.

Professor Liviu Librescu, 76, threw himself in front of the shooter, who had attempted to enter his classroom. The Israeli mechanics and engineering lecturer was shot to death, “but all the students lived - because of him,” Virginia Tech student Asael Arad - also an Israeli - told Army Radio.

Several of Librescu’s other students sent e-mails to his wife, Marlena, telling of how he blocked the gunman’s way and saved their lives, said the son, Joe.

“My father blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee,” Joe Librescu said in a telephone interview from his home outside of Tel Aviv. “Students started opening windows and jumping out.”

Liviu Librescu, was respected in his field, his son said.

“His work was his life in a sense,” said Joe. “That was a good place for him to practice his research.”

The couple immigrated to Israel from Romania in 1978 and then moved to Virginia in 1986 for his sabbatical, but had stayed since then, Joe told Army Radio.

They stand outside with their guns drawn and appear to be afraid to enter the building. That is what I saw from that cell phone video. Now I admit I don’t know the full story, nor if they were able to get into the building, or if other cops were already in the building. But if the cops took their time trying to get into a building where clearly people were being shot one after the other I have a problem.

So do I. Remember, that was what happened at Columbine. The teachers and students tried to handle business while the the SWAT(?) team stayed outside crouching behind car doors.

Hey, you’re the one who made the claim that the police tried to open the doors. I have yet to see that information anywhere else.

I saw a television interview with a student yesterday that described the police as having difficulty with the ground floor exterior doors of the building.

They used those battering ram tools to bust open the door...they closed it again.

They could not enter the 2nd floor where all the carnage was taking place because it was those interior hall doors to the staircase that were chained from the inside.

That's why some of the victims were shot in the stairwell...because they were trapped on the floor.

Funny about gun control. Yes, it’s pretty loose in VA, but the campus didn’t allow any. Lot of help that did, keeping the killer and his guns out!

FNC’s coverage is horrible. All emotion and little facts. I have been watching from the top of the hour and no walk through or time line. These guys have no sense of geography - none. Katherine Herridge gave the story on the perp; then said she’s summarize and just repeated. She is so disjointed on every story.

The love to put on these eye-witnesses that are can't speak.

These guys could not organize a sock draw. I’ll watch Britt tonight and he will make some sense, but the rest are horrible.

Greta is the WORST reporter on the planet. She asks these binary questions. We watch her for the hoot. Her panels are hysterical. Our favorite is the former DC cop now “attorney”. He is ridiculous, but very funny.

It could be incorrect, but the gun shop owner wrote that the ATF told him the serial number was filed off the 9mm. And the gun shop owner looks pretty credible.

It’s interesting—the contradictions.

Their organized crime/mob stuff all over Asia can make a given target more than unsafe, doomed. But somehow, that’s excused as reasonable and normal. LOL.

Have you ever tried to enter a double metal door on any building...for example a movie theater?

They only open from the interior. THAT'S the type of door that hindered the police from entering that door.

Once they did break through..they encountered the chained doors to the 2nd floor.
