U.N. Disarmament Body Taps Iran as Vice Chairman/U.S. taxpayer gives the U.N. over $5.3 billion/yr.

This week, the U.N. Disarmament Commission re-elected Iran as its vice-chair, reports the U.S. Senate's Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, and International Security on its official web site.

A majority of U.N. member states decided to allow Iran to remain in this position despite the fact the U.N. Security Council declared Iran has violated the non-proliferation resolutions the Commission is charged to promote, laments the subcommittee.

At the same time, another state sponsor of terrorism, Syria, was selected to be the Commission’s rapporteur to record and document the Commission’s work.

Two weeks earlier, the U.N. Human Rights Council announced it would no longer examine the human rights abuses in Iran, the subcommittee further noted.

These abuses are describe by the Department of State’s "Country Reports on Human Rights Practices" as including summary executions (including minors), torture (including amputations, eye-gouging, floggings), and severe restrictions of religious and political freedoms.

Key U.N. Facts:

The U.S. taxpayer annually gives the U.N. system over $5.3 billion.

At least $2.24 million of this money goes to the U.N. Disarmament Commission.

At least $18.28 million of this money goes to the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights which provides staffing and logistical support to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Less than half (46 percent) of the countries voting in the General Assembly are democracies accountable to their citizens.

Another fine example of the madness that is the U.N. Putting Iran back in control of “disarmament” activity is like putting a vampire in charge of a blood bank. Such total insanity that the U.S. taxpayer is being RIPPED OFF to give billions to this internation pool of insanity and anti-Americanism.

God help us.

I wonder what would happen if one of the Republican candidates were to make American withdrawal from the United Nations a key issue in his campaign.

UN coming unglued right before our eyes.

That's precisely what the khomeinists of Iran have wanted. They rather enjoy the mockery of any and all international institutions which would wield the moral authority to condemn its murderous actions, and it's succeeding there too.

I looked at the issues page on Tancredo's campaign site, and he doesn't mention it. I know he's been critical of the UN, but I don't know if he's made a concrete statement calling for our withdrawal. The only candidate I know that has is Ron Paul, but I wouldn't vote for him for other reasons.

But anyway, neither Fred Thompson nor Newt Gingrich run, I'm thinking about voting for Tancredo myself. I know he's not going to win, but I think I agree with him on more issues than any other candidate, and I don't particularly care which of the "big 3" win.

It would be demagogued to the hilt and would guarantee Republican defeat in the general election.

One has to use the right weapon for the job. Never use a howlitzer in broad daylight when a rifle with a silencer in the dead of night will be less noticed. In other words they should not even discuss withdrawal at this stage. The first step is educating the American people as to what is going on first. That has not been done properly. Then let the people draw their own conclusions.

Most people think the U.S. “contribution” to the U.N. amounts to a couple billion dollars a year. But Senator Tom Coburn has documented that the U.S. funded portion of an annual U.N. budget of $15-$20 billion amounts to between 25 and 30 percent. Under Bush, funding for the U.N. system has grown from $3.1 billion in 2001 to $5.3 billion in 2005.

http://www.aim.org/aim_column/5275_0_3_0/

U.S. contributions to the U.N. system are over $5.3 billion

OMB, for the first time ever, reveals how much the taxpayers fund the U.N.

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a report yesterday to Dr. Coburn on contributions of U.S. taxpayers to the United Nations. Before this report, no one in the federal government had ever developed a public compilation of the total U.S. contributions, including non-monetary, to the entire U.N. system.

According to the report, in 2005, the United States gave $5.3 billion to the U.N—a 30% increase from 2004 funding level of $4.1 billion. Almost every Department of the U.S. government plus several independent agencies fund the U.N. Although the U.N. does not track this information or at least does not make such information public, most experts say the total U.N. budget is between $15-20 billion. The U.S. funded portion is between 25% and 30%.

The release of this report is a small first step towards transparency for the U.S. government. The taxpayers donate a considerable amount of cash and in-kind contributions to the U.N., but without knowing where the money is going and exactly how much, it is impossible to judge whether or not this is money well spent.

I actually agree, and was simply conjecturing as to how it'd affect the Republican primary. For an anti-UN Presidential campaign to succeed, it would require the preparation you described, as well as a good communicator to present these ideas effectively. Of course, that's true for almost any issue.

What a candidate might accomplish by taking this position during this election cycle is begin the discussion you described. As of now, US withdrawal from the UN is seen as a fringe issue, though I do think there's more grassroots support for it than many realize.

So we are subsidizing an institution who’s primary goal seems to be to destroy us. Krushev’s statement that we will sell them the rope with which they hang us was wrong. We’re giving it to them.

I think the U.N. is a good idea gone bad. I would prefer to fix it than to dismantle it. However, that is a huge if not impossible challenge given France and Russia’s views.

In any event it is way too premature to even be discussing getting us out of the UN. Most of the public has no idea what is going on there and have an idealistic notion about the UN. We should be using this information to refute the dems on this naive idealistic idea they have that we should not be going it alone and should rely on the UN etc etc

Rather than worrying about extracting us from the UN which is political suicide we should use this issue to beat up on dems - over and over and over.
