HAVE SCOTTISH ARCHAEOLOGISTS FOUND ROB ROY'S HOME?

Archaeologists are excavating a house they think may have belonged to legendary Scottish outlaw Rob Roy.

The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) dig is examining the lower slopes of Ben Lomond at Ardess, where Rob Roy is known to have lived in early 18th century.

“Documentary evidence records that Rob Roy owned land at Ardess in 1710-11 and the Duke of Montrose became his feudal superior,” said Derek Alexander, NTS archaeologist.

“However, facing bankruptcy he secretly signed the lease over to his nephew James Graham of Glengyle and John Hamilton of Bardowie in order that it was protected from the claims of his creditors.”

The archaeologists have uncovered the large boulders forming the foundations of a possible turf-built longhouse, located in the oak woods beside the Rowchnock burn and close to the 19th house of Tigh an Eas along the Ardess Hidden History Trail.

“The large boulder wall suggests the building is earlier in date than the 19th century,” said Derek. “We are hopeful that artefacts such as pottery, glass and tobacco pipes will be able to date the site back into the early 18th century, when Rob Roy would have been here.”

Rob Roy McGregor became renowned as an outlaw who clashed with the Duke of Monmouthshire after defaulting on a loan. His exploits were romanticised in his own lifetime through Daniel Defoe’s fictional account of his life, Highland Rogue, published in 1723.

legendary Scottish outlaw Rob Roy>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Rob Roy MacGregor was not an outlaw. He was a freedom fighter, and a man deeply concerned with the preservation of his Clan in the face of British tyranny.

His very name was proscribed by the British, and he had to use the name Campbell.

Anyone who writes about Rob Roy MacGregor should first read an accurate history about him. He was an excellent swordsman, aided by his very long arms and reach. Rob Roy Macgregor: His Life and Times, by W.H. Murray

It is clear that the writer of this piece knows very little about the man, who is buried with a marker over his grave which states: "MacGregor despite them." He died a natural death, against all odds, I might add.

I love his memory dearly.

Did they ever find the table where William Wallace screamed FREEEDOM before he was beheaded while liberals were screaming SLAVERY?

"Wait! Let me talk to Edward the Longshanks! I can get him to promise me he won`t hang us from the rafters! He is a nice man! I`ll lie and say the McDonald clan want peace and will give him 23000 acres!"

"Bloody hell! Pelosi, we never said that!"

Tim Roth was incredible in that movie. I mean have you ever seen a bastard more convincingly portrayed than in that movie? And the ending was perfect "SLICE"!

My wife and I can’t watch Tim Roth in anything else without thinking about how rotten his character was in Rob Roy. It almost casts a shadow on any other character he plays when we see him. Hopefully he wasn’t so good at it because he can relate to the character.

I know what you mean... You watch him in Rob Roy, he has got that sadistic bastard personality down almost too good, especially in the sword fighting scenes. He makes a move with the sword then steps back and seems to relish in the injury and suffering. That was either incredibly brilliant or a little too close to call ‘acting’. There isn`t a movie I`ve ever seen where someone has played an evil part so convincingly, and unbelieveably he lost the Oscar to Kevin Spacey for “The Usual Suspects”.

I remember watching Disney's film based on the Defoe novel. It was released in 1953. Richard Todd, a favorite actor of mine, played Rob Roy and Glynis Johns played his wife. Todd served as a paratrooper in WWII. He's still alive.

According to Wikipedia: "After landing in Normandy on D-Day as one of the first British officers, he met up with Major John Howard on Pegasus Bridge — he would later appear in two films in which this scene was recreated: in D-Day the Sixth of June (1956) he played the commanding officer of the unit in which both of them served, and in The Longest Day (1962) he played Major Howard himself."
