Dating a Jehovah's Witness: Am I asking for it?
Me | 4/10/2007 | Me

Posted on 04/10/2007 9:12:55 PM PDT by ROTB

What is the collective experience of this body with regard to dating outside of traditional Christendom? Does it always end in divorce, or perhaps head-butting once there are children?

I'm 33 and the girl is 24. Am I asking for trouble if I move forward with this girl? What experiences do y'all have when it comes to dating Mormons/JW etc? Do they ever really come around, or do their families get to them more often than not?

I belong to Jesus Christ, and I've met a nice girl that is a Jehovah's Witness.

How would you raise the kids? If you can't come up with an acceptable answer to that question, you should punt.

Perhaps this is an evangelical opportunity for you.

The religion and her family comes with the Girl. Learn or Leave. Accept it or acquire a new girl.

You are asking for big time trouble. The JW organization is basically a mind control cult. They probably wouldn't let you marry her without converting first. You REALLY need to check the organization out.

“Am I asking for trouble if I move forward with this girl?”

Why are you going to move in with a girl (I assume before marriage) if you are a Christian? Don’t you recognize that as wrong?

This may be bad advice, but it works for me personally: Don't listen to others.

I mean to HELL with them! All their wisdom and experience means nothing. You can beat the odds on your own.

Go for it!

As one of the Seven Wise Men [forgot which one] of ancient Greece answered to a similar question [about prospective marriage], “no matter what you do, you’ll come to regret it”.

I’ve seen some nice folks of the sect outside and far from NYC. But in the city proper, they seem on the whole isolated and sadly continuously proffering forecasts of doom.

Of this date, they seem to rachet up new future doomsday dates. From what I observed, it’s really a safe place for those with limited education.

Now if this girl is interesting, you’ll need to make sure she’ll swim in the direction of your tide. Otherwise I can tell you from experience, you’ll be in a war wih her family and she will not be too helpful if she takes her marching orders from them.

Just a word based on experience.

Would the age difference cause a problem? I like ‘em young, too, but a nine-year difference with a religion that’s different and less, uh, flexible?...Is she hot? ...Good luck!

I write to a former school mate who became a J.W. She informs me emphatically that she is not a Christian, only she doesn’t captailize the word Christian.

Are you prepared to give up Jesus Christ for this girl?

Don't count on changing her just as she should not count on changing you. Look for a compromise and give her her space and things will work out. Set your heels on any religious subject and the marriage is doomed.

She has been taught since early on to look to the husband for religious guidance. Don't under any circumstance abuse this to change her beliefs. It will eventually blow up.

JWs are seriously discouraged from marrying outside their faith.

A friend of mine married a Jehovah's Witness.

She made him quit his job (he was a police officer) and he had to give up alcohol and stop celebrating holidays.

Plus, if your life depends on a blood transfusion, then you're going to die.

The first and most important aspect of any married relationship is shared theology. If two religious people marry, but they do not share the central aspect of their lives, how then can they truly have a stable, lasting, loving relationship?
