It's never over till it's over" goes the familiar refrain. This time, though, it's truly over for The Sopranos.
The quintessentially American family epic raises the curtain on the first of its nine final episodes tonight. The final aria will be sung June 10. The final scene was filmed in a wholesome family ice cream parlour, in Bloomfield, N.J. and includes James Gandolfini's gangster don and family man Tony Soprano, Edie Falco's pragmatic -- and legit -- mob moll Carmela Soprano and Tony Sirico's immaculately coiffed capo Peter Paul Gualtieri, a.k.a. Paulie Walnuts, a movie buff and debt collector given to saying things like, "I was born, grew up, spent a few years in the army, a few more in the can and here I am, a half o' wise guy."

Uh..., hey, just in case you didn't know...there is a little button on your TV...some call it the on-off button.
Use it.
In case you can't find that button, then just go to the wall and pull the plug from the socket.
All this nanny-state crap is just that...crap.
Why do you think you have the exclusive province to decide what I or anyone else watches on TV or reads in a book?
Or that you have the right to control what someone writes in a book or creates as a TV show or movie?
I agree that some of the content of the stuff being put out this day and age is beyond the bounds of decency, but I refuse to follow some taliban-like edicts from a radical religious fundamentalist with delusions of forcing everyone else into his/her chosen lifestyle.
Government intrudes into my life enough as it is.
I don't need any more intrusions.
And just to make sure that we understand one another...I suggested you use the on-off button, but if you don't wish to, then hey, I really don't care, since it's your life, your business, and what you do, in the privacy of your home, is none of my business.
Let's keep it that way.
I don't think it's over the top to say it saved television drama. It's for damn sure the big three don't have anything that comes close to it.

Since when is evil swiftly punished??
Can’t and won’t go with you on this. While I’d agree to some form of decency laws, outright censorship that ignores all reality or creative ideas is nuts. Personally, I don’t have a TV and I make choices every week about what my family watches on the VCR-monitor combination. Discretion is the first, and best, defense against mindless trash.
If you really want to change America’s veiwing habits, you must change the culture. This can happen only if people are changed and that job starts with ourselves.
My wife and I have started watching Sopranos reruns on A&E. I have no idea where we are in the series.
We are enjoying the show. It’s a must see for us.
Worst show on TV. I have tried numerous times to get into it and just find it totally boring. I have the first season and have watched the first episode so many times in an attempt to try and find what people find it this absolutely boring show.
We are getting The Shield on 3 channels. I don’t know which is reruns and which is up to date.
The Forrest Whitaker stuff leads me to believe we are watching the latest.
Lurker, you sure are being a comedian today on this blessed Easter day. The three networks have the best dramas going currently. So many to state but here goes just a few, CSI, Law and Order, Grey’s Anatomy, 24, House, Boston Legal, Las Vegas. What say you? (I always wanted to say that....once). Happy Easter! I already know you won’t agree with me. lol.
That’s a good thing, I suppose. However, my beef is with this nitwit author. I assume he’s Canadian, too, but I don’t know. We’ve got plenty of leftist idiots in this country that think America is a hellhole of criminality and violence and are more than willing to shove that view in everyone’s face - especially when they have a bully pulpit like a newspaper column. Picture this glowing praise for some cable show about a blended, multicultural household of gay pedophiles. I’d bet my bottom dollar if the writing was witty and humorous, this clown would gush about the ‘normal American household’ depicted in that sort of show as well. I have no bone to pick about the Sopranos, exactly; just tired of the arrogant elitist attitude of culture mavens.
And beyond all this, it's not a CSI show.
I'll take it. I caught the first few episodes when it came out on A&E(?) last year, but keep missing it ever since. Just mail it to...
You may not like The Sopranos, but to call it worse than Maury, Cheaters, Full House, or The View is overstating your case.
You may never have watched it, but you definitely have missed something brilliant and extraordinary.
Really funny recap of the entire series to date. Funny, but accurate.
Hmmm, I have to be careful, but let’s just say - when you’ve ‘known’ the real ones, you don’t need a TV version.
Dang you took me literally. I never saw Cheaters. I would not know anything about that show. Sopranos is a show that I thought I would like, but unfortunately just never was able to get into it. Funny, I thought I would hate 24 and one of my friends gave me first season and said “just give it a shot.” I was bored on weekend and put in the first disk and ended up watching the entire season that weekend. lol. I thought Sopranos would have been the same outcome.
“Under the Hays Code, the Sopranos would be banned for its profanity, sexual perversion and most importantly for glorifying criminality and depicting evil not being punished swiftly and surely.”
It is cable television. You don’t want the show, don’t pay for the station.
A&E has butched up the show. You’re seeing only 3/4ths of a typical program. Plus the commercials, five or six at a time, interrupt the events.
FX runs the current episodes of The Shield. Season 6 began on Tuesday, 9PM.
Wikipedia has a pretty decent writeup which is current to the last episode.
SPIKE runs the reruns. And Fox? (not sure)
Forest Whitaker has been doing an awesome job as Kavenaugh, looks like he’s going to get even nastier this coming Tuesday.
