It's never over till it's over" goes the familiar refrain. This time, though, it's truly over for The Sopranos.
The quintessentially American family epic raises the curtain on the first of its nine final episodes tonight. The final aria will be sung June 10. The final scene was filmed in a wholesome family ice cream parlour, in Bloomfield, N.J. and includes James Gandolfini's gangster don and family man Tony Soprano, Edie Falco's pragmatic -- and legit -- mob moll Carmela Soprano and Tony Sirico's immaculately coiffed capo Peter Paul Gualtieri, a.k.a. Paulie Walnuts, a movie buff and debt collector given to saying things like, "I was born, grew up, spent a few years in the army, a few more in the can and here I am, a half o' wise guy."

Never watched it, won’t miss it.
They will all die or go to jail in the end.
The Sopranos changed television, and not just HBO. Complex, adult dramas like Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Rome and The Wire could not have existed without it. It did more than that, though. The Sopranos showed that television drama could be dark, complex and coloured with emotional shades of grey, the mirror opposite of the popular TV programs of the day: Friends, Touched by an Angel and the prime-time game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? It shared its serialized story format with popular prime-time soaps like Dallas and Dynasty but its sensibility was closer to the big-screen realism of Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman.
A fitting eulogy for an incredible series.
I’m praying that the writers get back on track for this final season but I’m not holding my breath.
“The quintessentially American family epic” is about gangsters? Doesn’t make me sorry I pulled the plug on the tv years ago.
Not to mention FX Network's "The Shield", a cop-themed drama which - just starting its 6th season - is also coming to a Sopranos-like apotheosis this week.
So true,,I sobbed thru the end of Six Feet Under.
Amen. One initiative we need in this country is to restore Hays Code standards to movies and extend them to cover all forms of broadcast media such as cable television. Under the Hays Code, the Sopranos would be banned for its profanity, sexual perversion and most importantly for glorifying criminality and depicting evil not being punished swiftly and surely. And that other show someone mentioned, the Shield, would be banned for showing our brave policemen as corrupt and violent. I pray for that day, and others should join me.
NO! Is the Shield ending? I watched the first episode of this season and was blown away by the darkness.
Sopranoes, Wire, Shield all sustain me,,great shows. I think the Wire is the best.
Are you serious?
Just curious, if you have no dog in this fight, i.e., you don’t watch and won’t miss. Why are you here?
I have a creepy feeling the answer is yes. But it might be a case of "Forgotton Sarcasm Tag" syndrome.
Your parody is dead-on.
The SFU finale reduced me and my wife to emotional cripples for the next 24 hours.
It's been over a year and she still refuses to watch the show (which means I wasted a ton of cash on the DVD box set!)
The writers must have been channeling Spider Robinson ("Tony Donuts").
“I watched the first episode of this season and was blown away by the darkness.”
Last week was the first episode of the new 6th season.
It was the most taught episode yet because Maccay and his team are being relentlessly pursued by an obsessed (and himself somewhat corrupt) Internal Affairs officer (Forest Whitaker).
The word is that there will be a 7th season, but how that’s going to pan out is a complete mystery. I guess we’ll know more on Tuesday.
If I were Tony, I’d have this writer killed.
SFU has nothing on The Sopranos
