TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.
"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.
A video clip of the then-mayoral candidate issuing a similar declaration in 1989 in a speech to the "Women's Coalition" appeared recently on the Internet.
"There must be public funding for abortions for poor women," Giuliani says in the speech that is posted on the video sharing site YouTube. "We cannot deny any woman the right to make her own decisions about abortion."
When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said "Yes."
"If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right," he explained, "If that's the status of the law, yes."

Saying that pretty much negatives whatever else follows or preceeds it. Rudy's goose is cooked. He will not win the GOP nomination with that stance. Period.
Do you consider advocating this sort of public funding to be consistent with claims of fiscal conservatism?
Bill Simon had assurances that Rudy supported the Hyde Amendement.

The law allows us to do a lot of things. We are allowed to own a gun for instance. But the governments failure to buy one for a person who can’t afford it does not entail depriving them of their constitutional right. Rudy’s logic sounds like the logic of someone who is in favor of very big government.

Me, I'm not surprised in the least Rudy has said this.
You might be right.
But,,, he has the political character to hold his position as he see it.
I just don’t hold this issue as a major decision metric.
That’s just me - I won’t try to convince anyone otherwise.
By the way, abortion is a big business and it puts a lot of money into elections. Giuliani is basically saying he supports funding Democrats at all levels of government. Because the fact is, that taxpayer money enables the abortion industry to poor money into getting Democrats elected.

Because a president appoints supreme court justices. That would tip the balance of power and at least return abortion to where it was before- a state issue, not one where there was an imaginary right found in the constitution.
Rudy believes that imaginary right exists. He would appoint judges who believe with him. That is why he is a bad choice for president. Well, for republicans anyway. For democrats they’d probably love his position.

Under rudy, that right would be regulated away...consistent with the spirit of the 2nd amendment, naturally.
I see it as 1/100,000,000th of relevance to being “fiscally conservative”.
I do not consider GWB to be a fiscal conservative - not even close.
The abortion issue will hopefully be decided by the courts who will in turn throw it back to the states.
Thats where it should end. To some extent Republican pols don’t want to lose the issue. Hence we got David Souter and almost Harriet Meirs.
David Souter was wrought upon us by Warren Rudman and John Sunnou.(sp?)
Watched him with Hammity last night and it was sickening between the two of the them. The Ham pandered and about broke his smile on this RINO.
It’s about Conservative Principles Rudy, you will never get my vote not only because of your public support of abortions, but your stand on the 2nd ammendment and your liberal views on homosexual’s.

The simple fact is that the vast majority of unwanted pregnancies that don’t end in abortion will result in a huge tab to the taxpayer for welfare, food stamps, public schooling (for the child of a non-taxpayer), Medicaid, and on and on. Anti-abortion activists try to make it sound like a big financial injustice is being done to them when tax dollars pay $250 for an abortion they don’t approve of, but the only alternative in today’s political reality is for people who would rather the abortion had taken place to be stuck with the welfare tax bite of more than 1000 times the cost of the abortion. Ideally, no one should be forced to fund government transfer payments to individuals for things they don’t approve of, but until we can completely dismantle the welfare state, that’s not an available option as far as this particular issue is concerned.
