Giuliani stands by support of publicly-funded abortions
CNN ^ | April 4th, 2007

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.

"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.

A video clip of the then-mayoral candidate issuing a similar declaration in 1989 in a speech to the "Women's Coalition" appeared recently on the Internet.

"There must be public funding for abortions for poor women," Giuliani says in the speech that is posted on the video sharing site YouTube. "We cannot deny any woman the right to make her own decisions about abortion."

When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said "Yes."

"If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right," he explained, "If that's the status of the law, yes."

I don't see any way to spin this other than really, really bad for Guiliani.

Its not bad for Rudy. Rudy has been consistent on this for a long time. The only thing that would be bad is if Rudy all of a sudden changed his mind and said "I will abolish Abortion if I am president". Then Freepers would call him a liar and a fraud!

It has always been his position - always.

What would anyone say if he suddenly flipped his position?

Can you imagine what they would call him?

His view has never changed - so talking about this as news is silly.

Rudy’s taking a hit on this one for sure.... Public monies should not be paying for abortions that are not medically necessitated (IE 99.99999999999%) of all abortions.

You cannot prevent someone from performing an immorral yet legal act... but you cannot expect others to fund it.

Why should pro-life people who forced to pay for abortions?

The Hyde Amendement ( a federal law which banned tax funded abortion) helped to reduce the abortion rate.

IOW, you believe in “shrinking government” by exterminating the poor.

Given that the current choice is between about $250 for an abortion and hundreds of thousands in various welfare payments and other taxpayer subsidies, um, yes, this is a fiscally conservative position. Have you really thought through what it costs the taxpayers to support the child (often brain-damaged in utero and very premature due to substance abuse) of a non-working, unemployable mother? Public housing, public schooling (including the entitlement to very expensive special ed services), food stamps, Medicaid, and all too often multiple rounds of incarceration and substance rehab programs starting when the child reaches its teens. A fair estimate of the average cost would be $500,000 per child.

I'd have far more respect for that position if you just came right out and said that abortion should be mandatory for all welfare recipients.

That's the underlying reason why we have abortion anyway -- so why be shy about it?

BINGO! See my post #101. He’s is consistent and honest. He has not changed to suit Freepers or anyone. If you don’t like Rudy - don’t like him but this IS NOT NEWS!

Silly me, thinking that the views the candidates express matter in an election campaign.

Well, if he still supports government funding of abortion, doesn't that put an end to the "Rudy is a fiscal conservative" talk that has been thrown around?

Setting the abortion part of the argument aside, does Rudy think that every right must be funded by the government? Does he? Or is it just this particular right?

Name a single POTUS who did anything to stop abortions?

You can’t - it has nothing to do with being President.

Reagan - appointed Antonin Scalia to the SCOTUS
Bush 41 - appointed Clarence Thomas to the SCOTUS
Bush 43 - appointed John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the SCOTUS

Rudy says he will appoint justices who are strict constructionists, and yet, he sees abortion as a right enshrined in the Constitution? Sorry, but I will never vote to give this man the power to appoint anyone to the Supreme Court.

Bill Simon had assurances that Rudy supported the Hyde Amendement.

Yeah, sure. LOL.

After this political blunder by Giuliani, I wouldn't be surprised if Bill Simon never shows his face again on the campaign trail.

He’s is consistent and honest. He has not changed to suit Freepers or anyone.

That's all well and good. His positions, however, are not. Since Guiliani persists on being this wrong on the issues of human life, Constitutional understanding, and fiscal conservatism, then I see no reason to vote for him, either in the primary or a general election.

GREAT POINT! The only thing I disagree with you about there is that as long as it’s free, why not go for the AR-10? I assume the government will pay for ammo.

And also appointed some judges that may well overturn Roe v. Wade if a case gets to the SC (long shot). Could take a while, though.

The Rudy shills have made claims about Rudy being tough on illegal immigrants, supporting the partial birth abortion ban, respecting the 2nd Amendement, when his past showed the opposite.

This news revealed that Rudy supporters are liars.
