Would someone please let Andrea Mitchell know that John McCain is competing for the Republican presidential nomination? He's not going up against Obama, Hillary et al. in a race to determine who can surrender in Iraq fastest.
Giving her expert analysis on this morning's "Today" of John McCains lackluster fundraising results, Mitchell claimed that John McCain is "hurt by his support for the Iraq war."
Could Andrea possibly be more wrong? McCain's support for President Bush's Iraq policy is the only thing keeping him alive, if barely, in the GOP race. Opposition to the war would put McCain in Chuck Hagel territory -- so unpopular among Republican voters that he dare not even throw his hat into the ring.
What's hurting McCain is not his support for the war. It is the reputation he has earned in the GOP for being unreliably conservative on everything from campaign finance to tax cuts to immigration to having played footsie with John Kerry in 2004 regarding a possible veep nomination.
As I noted here, Hannah Storm of CBS fell into the same error when recently interviewing McCain, asking him whether "your position on this war, and your support of sending more troops in" has caused him to fall behind Rudy in the GOP primary polls.
Mitchell's mistake this morning again demonstrates how hard it is for the MSM, trapped in a liberal, anti-war prism, to understand things from a Republican perspective.

Mitchell’s-mistake-on-McCain ping to Today show list.
McCain was hurt when he sided with the DEMS and kissed up to the press. It was long before he flopped to support the war.
It is rather laughable, isn't it?
I can’t stand much of what McCain has done in the Senate.......campaign finance being at the top of my list.....but he has stood by our military on the WOT.
Absolutely true.
..people have to stop taking these so-called "mistakes" as mistakes. They ARE calculated liberal statements....NOT MISTAKES!!
Exactly. Mitchell is part of the Democrat pimp media. She might as well be on the DNC payroll; for all I know, she is.
Lots of these ‘reporters’ begin their day at work by going to their fax machines for today’s ‘talking points’ sent over by the DNC.
There’s no pretense anymore. Most of these folks are selling the Democrat agenda.
McCain’s spearheading the “Gang of 14” in re Bush’s judicial nominees didn’t do him any good, either.
As many have previously stated, the media look at things through a liberal lense.
Andrea is nuts.
Good point. The more you know, the less conservative he is.
McCain’s support of the war is the ONLY thing in his favor.
McCain-Feingold
Gang of 14
...
AND HE’S A NUT!
What a load of BS. That is one of McCain’s strongest points. McCain is hurt by his stance on keeping the boarders open, wanting to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants, wanting to more closely regulate guns and his attack on the 1st amendment via the McCain Findgold law and his attack on the religious right, only to name a few reasons why his campaign is fall apart. Of course Ms. Mithchell considers all these issues irrelevant in her world.
Precisely.
“Mitchell claimed that John McCain is “hurt by his support for the Iraq war.””
Andrea, you should consider a career change. Find something you’re good at.
pickin’ cherries
I heard an NPR analyst say the same thing yesterday. Somebody has been reading the talking points.

NBC News declared Iraq was “in civil war” although 61% of Iraqis disagree (Sunday Time poll).
My question : why do we care about what NBC says ? This channel has been lying since day 1.
