The Giuliani '08 juggernaut just ran head-on into Podhoretz's First and Last Law of Politics, namely: No politician seeking the nation's highest office can do as much damage to another as he can do to himself. --SNIP-- The question before us today is whether Rudy Giuliani committed a blunder of comparable proportions by consenting to a Barbara Walters request for a joint interview with him and his wife Judi - during the course of which he said, embarrassingly, that he would welcome her presence at Cabinet meetings and listen to her closely on issues relating to health care.
Until that moment, he had handled his presidential bid as perfectly as could be imagined......his four months of bliss came to an end when ABC News released the first snippets of the Walters interview last Thursday..... Walters moment only revealed that Rudy ......thought he could say something cute about his wife that really wasn't cute at all - seemed perhaps more about currying favor with her than about finding the appropriate balance between portraying a loving marriage and depicting a future presidency. Of course, what Rudy was doing with Barbara Walters was an effort....- to neutralize the damaging effect of his marital history by being open and clear and honest. He did that well.....then he muffed it.
News of the Walters interview began a 96-hour ordeal for Giuliani that included the leak of his grand-jury testimony in the case of his former police commissioner's ties to a crooked contractor - potentially his most serious liability - and the revelations that Judi Giuliani has actually been married more than twice and had worked for a medical-equipment firm that used (and thus killed) dogs.

I have no problem with a single man marrying a much-younger woman, or the fact that for two years he dated a woman who has had five husbands (country singer Lori Morgan.) Likewise, I don’t have a problem with divorce, if people who are unhappy together need to get out of a loveless marriage. FDR had a woman in his life that was not his wife for many many years btw. That didn’t impact his ability to lead the country and win WWII.
Sure, if it were a debate. It won't be. It'll be a Q&A session among many contenders. Giuliani will just ignore what he can't handle.
And you think Fred’s gonna get $100 million?
Please I beg you, tell me what Rudy will do against our enemies that no other candidate is capable of doing? Please, tell me his experience with dealing with the military matters? Tell me what he did before 9/11 after the first attack on the WTC to protect NYC from the terrorists? Please tell me what are his plans to protect us? What about protecting the borders? What about the OTHER threats out there, besides the Muslims? Do you believe declining a check and calling Yassir Arafat to the carpet are qualifications for fighting a WAR???
Wrong! Polls have shown conclusively that when average voters learn Rudy's stance on these issues, those that were for him abandon him at an approximate 90% rate.
well those who have no problem with fred’s marriage to a younger woman and prior relationships when he was single, are not hypocritical for finding a publicly adulterous affair on the part of rudy immoral. you seem to be attempting to make that a hypocritical stance and i am simply pointing out why it is not. the immorality charge against rudy is based not on his divorce, but rather on the very public adulterous affair.
My guess he will all of a sudden remember a previous commitment.
Fred Thompson has far lesss baggage, and is far more electable.
Much ado about nothing... Judi is not Hillary, and americans knows that.
So you had no problem with Bill Clinton and Monica? You never said he was committing adultery or that he should have had more decency?
“Frankly, this doesnt concern me all that much. Im much more concerned about Rudys social liberalism.”
What social liberalism? Please get informed. He’s a fiscally conservative supply-sider. He favored workfare and took over 600,000 recipients off the welfare roles, he privatized municipally-owned properties, he lowered the sales tax, the hotel tax, the city income tax, small business taxes, the capital gains tax, he eliminated the marriage penalty tax, he did away with set-asides for minority contractors, he fought against union shake-downs, he refused to lower job standards to accommodate women and minorities, he favors school vouchers and is opposed to any sort of income redistribution. So tell me, what “social liberalism” are you talking about? Some of you who oppose Rudy are speaking so much nonsense it makes the head spin.
Rudy certainly didn’t show all of this chivalry toward Donna Hanover Guiliani and his kids.
He brought Judi into it and to think it is unfair is ridiculous.
They were a scandal. Good judgement on Rudy’s part, would have been to keep her out of the picture for awhile and not try to push her onto people.
For instance, going back and maybe being a nurse, would have done a lot for her image.
Bill Clinton is a serial adulterer who stays married for political convenience. In addition to having an affair with a much younger intern and lying about it under oath, he has been accused of rape. Apples and oranges.
“Republicans like himself. Oh joy, yet more RINOs in Congress. Just what we need to pull this country even farther to the left.”
He has absolutely nothing to do with the recruitment of other Republicans. You only reveal your own shallow understanding of politics by making statements like this.
Oh, yes! I'm sure that would have made you guys like her. LOL
If they are lapdogs they better stay away from Judy when she has staples in her hand.
It would help.
Serial adulterer? Rudy had an affair before he had an affair with Judy - how many does it take to become a serial adulterer? It isn’t apples and oranges - both men were married and couldn’t keep it in their pants - same thing.
Thank you. Please forgive my ignorance on this topic; may I ask another question? Were “real” conservatives this critical of President Reagan because of it?
