Global warming could melt Himalayas: UN

Global warming could cause more hunger in Africa and melt most Himalayan glaciers by the 2030s, according to a draft UN report due on Friday which also warns that the poorest nations are likely to suffer most.

The UN climate panel, giving the most authoritative study on the regional impact of climate change since 2001, also predicts more heatwaves in countries such as the United States, and damage to corals including Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

"We are talking about a potentially catastrophic set of developments," Achim Steiner, the head of the UN Environment Program, said of the likely impact of rising temperatures, widely blamed on greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels.

"Global warming could melt Himalayas: UN"

Is this an "April Fools" article? Oh, my, if Mt. Everest and K2 are to "melt" then it won't be so hard to reach their summits anymore....... the headling writer must know something the rest of us don't if it's supposed that mountains of rock can melt!!

Sure, Everest is the world's largest ice cube.

In truth the Khumbu glacier is receding, as are all the others.

However I don't attribute this to humans. Just a long term weather cycle.

Presumably, they mean the snow on the mountains and not the mountains themselves. If global warming could do THAT, I would actually be worried!

Nepal's annual average temperature has risen by 0.06 degrees Celsius, and three snow-fed rivers have shown signs of reduced flows.

I am confused. If the glaciers are melting, should there not be more flow?

Global warming started as a one degree change every couple hundred years - now, the Himalayas are melting.

"Global warming could melt Himalayas

Serves it right. I mean, the Himalayas are always like "look at me, I have the highest mountains..blah, blah, blah". So arrogant. Good riddance, as far as I'm concerned.

Actually, haven't you heard? Global warming is SOOO intense now, that the rocks will, in fact, melt.

The only solution is for Gore to run for Prez at the head of the Green Party!

These people think so 'here and now' without thinking about the actual scale.

I mean, 4.6 billion years is a long time. A long long long time. Too long for the human brain to comprehend. OF COURSE THEY WILL MELT. Not in our lifetime. Probably not even while humans exist.

The Himalayas have gone from ocean to desert to mountains to ocean to desert back to mountains a dozen times in the 4.6 billion year life of the earth. They will continue to do so long after humans are gone. We are incomprehensibly insignificant. We have existed on Earth to what equates to a nanosecond. A nanosecond of a nanosecond.

I put this headline right beside : "Sun could swell and engulf Earth" because they are both true.....eventually.
