Cops: Ore. Man Puts Kids in Car Trunk

Police Say Ore. Man Put Kids in Car's Trunk for Family Vacation Because Car Was Too Small

PORTLAND, Ore. Apr 1, 2007 (AP)— An Oregon man on vacation with his family is accused of putting two of his four children in a car trunk because the vehicle was too small to hold all of them.

Douglas Willy, 40, was arrested Saturday after police received a tip from a person who saw the family at a gas station, authorities said. He was charged with two counts of reckless endangerment.

Willy, his fiancee and their four children were taking a trip but the vehicle did not fit all six passengers. So, police said, he decided two of the children would ride in the trunk to avoid taking a second vehicle.

Police said a 12-year-old and 13-year-old were in the trunk, and had been riding inside for about 20 miles.

The woman took the children home on Saturday. Authorities said Willy was released without bail Sunday.

A telephone message left Sunday at the Willy's home was not immediately returned.

Cnsidering how popular it has become for people to murder their their children when they are unborn or partially born merely because they represent an inconvenience, I'm surprised that such tales of 'inconvenient' children being dealt with in a similar fashion are not far more common.

He should be commended for reducing his carbon foot print

But he was trying to save the children from additional global warming which is the biggest threat facing mankind today....In Oregon, the guy will go free.

Considering algore's 'stand' on environmental issues as well as his famous reversal on issues pertaining to the sanctity of Life, I have no doubt that Mr. Willy would be an award-winning parent in algore's view.

We used to ride in the back of my uncles pickup all the time. Now, he'd go to jail for it.

The only way to stop this is for the guberment to provide low cost SUVs for families to vacation in.

Why wasn't his fiancee charged too? She was complicit in the endangerment too.

In a Yugo
As the snow flies

At a used car lot on the edge of town
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
Buy a Yugo

And they drive with pride

Cause if there's one thing that this world needs
It's environmental friends who'll take the lead
In a Yugo

They say, "people don't you understand
Those suburbans are ruining the land"
But they'll wish they had a full size van one day
They point fingers at you and me
They say we're too blind to see
But do we simply use our heads
And choose another way?

As those small wheels turn
Fifty miles to the gallon
And their knees on their chest
They're gonna save enough gas
For all of the rest
In a Yugo

Then one day on the interstate
They suddenly lose control
They swerve to miss a baby duck
They're squashed beneath a produce truck

But they drove with pride...

And as the crowds drive past a little flat car
You know they saved a lot of gas
But they didnt get far
In a Yugo

And as they're trapped inside
At a used car lot on the other side of town
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
Buy a Yugo....

And they drive with pride...

At least you had an amusing flick to look forward to; these kids would only have been rewarded with more time with their 'parents' at the end of the trip, which doesn't sound like much of a benefit.

There's also the more likely explanation -- there are a lot of stupid people out there.

HEY! What about those of us that don't have any children! Aren't we entitled to an SUV also?

Agreed, although it takes a particularly depraved brand of stupidity and malice to do something like this.

Unbelievable how wimpy our soceity has become today.

Mom n Dad would let my brother Bill and I ride in the trunk when we were going to the beach in the mid 50's. It was fun, we kept the lid open, and waved to all the people behind us, including the police.

I have many fond memories of the summers going to and from the beach in this manner.

They did not think enough of their children to even get married.

Or to even rent or buy a reasonably-sized car for their vacation.

They probably could have rented a fullsize van for less than $500.00 for a week or so.

we kept the lid open

That's the difference with this story, and the reason why it's not 'wimpy' to object to this.

What if the car had a fold down rear seat and it was open to the car interior? As long the the two kids could crawl out via the car interior what's wrong? I'm not saying that was the case in this situation but I'm not sure it would be much different than a station wagon for some cars.
