Coalition Troops Kill, Capture Terrorists in Iraq
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, April 16, 2007 Coalition forces killed at least three enemy fighters and nabbed 11 others during operations across Iraq the past three days, military officials reported.
Coalition troops killed three armed men, wounded another and detained seven suspected terrorists during a raid this morning targeting an al Qaeda in Iraq network northeast of Ramadi.
During the course of the operation, ground forces began receiving small-arms fire from armed men in two separate buildings. Using appropriate self-defense measures, coalition forces returned fire.
The men killed and wounded were later identified as members of the Iraqi police force. Prior to the operation, coalition forces coordinated their operation, and no Iraqi police were known to be in the area.
“Coalition forces express their deepest sympathies to the families of the Iraqi police who were killed,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. “We do everything we can to reduce risk to friendly forces.”
The incident is currently under investigation.
Later in the operation, coalition forces cleared another targeted building and detained seven suspected terrorists with alleged ties to al Qaeda in Iraq, military officials said.
During a raid in Baghdad this morning, coalition forces killed an armed man and detained four suspects with ties to al Qaeda. The four suspects, with alleged links to foreign fighter facilitation, were detained when ground forces cleared a building in the area.
Iraqis at the scene claimed the man killed by coalition forces worked as an airport highway security officer. Coalition forces are working to validate the claim and determine his association with the detainees.
Iraqi army soldiers engaged and destroyed two car bombs yesterday as insurgents attacked in Mosul. Iraqi soldiers immediately treated the injured, reinforced security and returned fire as nearby enemy fighters attempted to siege the combat outpost.
Two Multinational Division North helicopters were in the area and responded quickly, providing support to Iraqi soldiers. Insurgent ground fire struck one aircraft, resulting in mechanical problems that forced the pilots to make a precautionary landing.
The helicopter, an OH-58D “Kiowa Warrior,” landed safely away from the engagement area. The pilots of the downed aircraft were not injured, and they were safely recovered by a second helicopter and returned to base.
The recovered pilots returned to their coalition base and returned to the engagement area in another helicopter to continue the fight. Their original aircraft was recovered by an alternate air crew.
An unknown number of terrorists, including the two vehicle drivers, were killed in the engagement. Four Iraqi army soldiers were killed and four others were wounded in the attack.
Two car bombs detonated in southwestern Baghdads Aeros Market yesterday, killing and wounding Iraqi civilians. Iraqi national police and coalition forces arrived on scene shortly after the attacks, where they established checkpoints and evacuated wounded Iraqis to local hospitals.
Iraqi emergency service personnel also responded to the scene, extinguishing fires and assisting with the medical treatment of bystanders injured in the blasts. The incident is under investigation.
Iraqi army soldiers from 1st Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Iraqi Army, cleared two improvised explosive devices and rescued two vehicle drivers April 14 when a group of insurgents attacked a fuel convoy en route from Baqubah, Iraq, to Iran.
After reports of small-arms fire, Iraqi soldiers responded to the attack on the convoy of seven tractor-trailer fuel trucks, clearing two IEDs en route to the site.
Soldiers secured the site, recovered the vehicles and rescued casualties.
Five vehicle drivers and one passenger were killed during the attack. Two drivers were taken to the 5th Iraqi army compound for security and questioning.

“Syria: Accept Arab initiative or we’ll resort to violence”
By JPOST.COM STAFF
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Syrian Information Minister Mohsen Bilal threatened on Monday evening to return the Golan Heights to Syrian hands “by way of resistance if Israel [rejects] the Arab peace initiative.”
Bilal did not elaborate, but some analysts raised the possibility of either a full scale conventional war or a terror campaign in the Golan as one of the means to undertake a mukawama (”resistance” in Arabic).
After saying that “Syria wishes to revive the peace process with Israel with the help of US and Russian mediators,” Bilal immediately added a threat, saying that “if Israel [rejects] the Arab peace initiative, the only way to get the Golan Heights back would be the way of resistance.”
Bilal, speaking at a press conference in Damascus, was referring to the Arab peace initiative of 2002.
Don’t underestimate Syria’s military
Bilal’s belligerent remarks followed on the heels of a visit by Syrian-born American businessman Abe Suleiman to Jerusalem last week.”
You’re welcome Cindy. I’ve been away from the news most of the day. I’m trying to read the very long thread on the shooting. Do they know if it was one, or two, shooters?
I haven’t read the thread, but pings to specific posts.
We have company today.
OPINION: HOWEVER, I am under the impression the jury is still out
if there was just one shooter.

Israel Warns of Syrian Buildup
Yaakov Katz (Jerusalem Post)
Senior defense officials have warned of an unprecedented military buildup in Syria. Following the Second Lebanon War, IDF Military Intelligence noticed a change within the Syrian military. Syria feels empowered by Hizbullah’s surprising success last summer and Damascus now believes it can use Hizbullah-like tactics in a future confrontation with Israel and possibly even defeat the IDF.
Syria has the ability to independently manufacture Scud missiles, and has 300 deployed in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights. Syrian missiles include a number of Scud D’s with a range of 700 kilometers and said to be capable of carrying nonconventional warheads. According to Yiftah Shapir - a researcher with the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University - the Syrian military also plans to use short-range Katyushas in any future conflict with Israel.
The heart of Syria’s missile program is in Hama, where a weapons factory is surrounded by more than 30 hardened concrete bunkers that house multiple launchers and missiles. In just minutes, experts said, these launchers could deliver more than a ton of nonconventional warheads anywhere in Israel. Another missile site near Homs contains a chemical warhead facility where a drive-through building leads to a facility where warheads are installed on ballistic missiles.

“CSU under heightened alert after Virginia Tech shootings”
By LAURA BAILEY
LauraBailey@coloradoan.com
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Colorado State University is in a state of heightened awareness after a gunman killed 31 people in a dorm and a classroom at Virginia Tech Monday morning.
Investigators have not said whether the gunman was a student or what his motivations might have been, but officials at Colorado State University alerted students and staff to be extra vigilant Monday.
E-mails went out asking building and dorm staff to be extra alert, and residence hall staff and students were reminded to not prop doors open or let strangers into their dorms, said university spokesman Brad Bohlander.
Its a reminder, we all have a role in being vigilant, Bohlander said.
Bohlander said the university has contingency plans in violent scenarios such as a shooter on campus and has run through mock scenarios to prepare for such an event.
We do everything we can as a university to prevent these kind of things, he said.”

Police Cite Person of Interest in Dorm Killing; Dead Gunman Yet to Be ID’d”
ARTICLE SNIPPET:
“April 16, 2007 A tranquil college campus in Virginia became a killing field Monday morning. At least 33 people are dead in the worst mass shooting in modern American history.
In a press conference tonight, Virginia Tech President Charles Steger gave a detailed timeline of the morning’s tragic events. He said a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting at a dormitory was made at approximately 7:15 a.m. While police were trying to assess what they first believed was a domestic dispute, they received a second 9-1-1 call, nearly two and a half hours later, that reported shootings on the opposite side of campus. According to the Virginia Police Chief Wendell Flinchum, officials have not definitively linked the two shootings.”

Expat Murdered in Cameroonian Capital
The Regional Security Office at U.S. Embassy Yaoundé reported the following:
On April 15, at approximately 7:00 pm, two American women were assaulted and robbed in a taxi while returning from dinner en route to a Yaoundé hotel. The women entered a taxi that was occupied by three males, a driver and two passengers. As the taxi departed for their destination, the passenger in the rear seat forced one of the womens head down while the front seat passenger turned around in his seat and began repeatedly punching the other woman in the face. The assailants did not display any weapons as they then began to remove the two womens jewelry and other personal items within reach. The women were dropped off in an area in the vicinity of the hotel and were assisted by area local citizens. The assailants were able to depart with jewelry, a cell phone, and approximately US $17.
One of the women sustained injuries to the face and head, but is healthy enough to return to the U.S., as scheduled, on the night of April 16. No further injuries were reported as a result of this incident, which remains under investigation by local police. The Regional Security Office reminds all travelers to exercise extreme caution when selecting taxis, as oftentimes, occupied taxis pose the greatest risk to would-be passengers due to the frequency of these types of assaults.
