Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

Rise in radical Islam last straw for Lebanon's Christians

Sunday Telegraph (London) April 1, 2007

Christians are fleeing Lebanon to escape political and economic crises and signs that radical Islam is on the rise in the country. In a poll to be published next month which was exclusively leaked to The Sunday Telegraph, nearly half of all Maronites, the largest Christian denomination in the country, said they were considering emigrating. Of these, more than 100,000 have submitted visa applications to foreign embassies. Their exodus could have a devastating effect on the country, robbing it of an influential minority which has acted as an important counter-balance to the forces of Islamic extremism. About 60,000 Christians have already left since last summer's war between Israel and Hezbollah. Many who remain fear that a violent showdown between rival Sunni and Shia factions is looming…

Peretz green lights IDF pinpoint strikes in Gaza

THE JERUSALEM POST Apr. 2, 2007

Defense Minister Amir Peretz has granted the IDF permission to renew pinpoint operations against terrorists within the Gaza Strip, effectively ending a months old cease-fire, Army Radio reported Sunday.

Peretz said Sunday evening that Hamas is exploiting the period of relative calm in the coastal strip to improve its military capabilities. He added that Hamas has intensified efforts to strike at Israeli security forces patrolling the fence that encircles Gaza with roadside bombs.

The defense minister's comments echoed recent statements made by IDF Chief of General Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who said it is upon the army to take action against the strengthening of Hamas' military forces.

Last week, for the first time since the cease-fire went into effect, the IDF succeeded in intercepting an Islamic Jihad rocket squad moments before it attempted to launch Kassam rockets from the northern Gaza Strip into Israeli territory.

Hamas targeting Salafis in Gaza

Sheikh dead in Gaza power struggle

Eyewitnesses told The Jerusalem Post that Adnan Manasreh, 30, a prominent member of the Salafi branch in the Gaza Strip, was gunned down as he walked out of a mosque in the Shajaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City last Friday. Two of his relatives were wounded in the attack.

"Four masked gunmen approached him and opened fire, killing him instantly," the witnesses reported. "They fled in a white Peugeot."

A senior PA security official in the Gaza Strip told the Post that "Hamas's fingerprints are all over this murder." He said that intelligence gathered by the PA security forces showed that the assassination was carried out by members of Hamas's armed wing, Izzaddin Kassam.

The official noted that tensions between the Salafis and Hamas have been mounting in the Gaza Strip ever since Ayman Zawahiri, the No. 2 in al-Qaida, accused Hamas of abandoning its ideology and "selling out" to Israel and the US. The Salafis are very close to al-Qaida and the two have been trying to establish a presence in the Gaza Strip, much to the dismay of Hamas.

Hamas Tried to Take Control of the Palestinian Police in the West Bank

Amit Cohen (Maariv-Hebrew, 30Mar07)

It was supposed to be a quiet, secret mission - that would lead to Hamas taking over the Palestinian police in the West Bank. Hundreds of Hamas activists were recruited and trained in the West Bank prior to their entry into the police, but the quick reaction of the Israeli security services and the IDF cut short the plan. In mid-2006, just a few months after winning the elections, Hamas decided to establish the Executive Force in Gaza, a police unit answering directly to the Interior Minister. Soon afterward, it decided to set up a similar force in the West Bank, in opposition to the security forces loyal to Mahmoud Abbas. Since an independent Hamas unit would be an easy target for the Israeli security services, Hamas decided on "quiet penetration" of the Palestinian police.

Released Hamas prisoners with a terror background formed the initial force, numbering some 80 activists, whose purpose was to recruit hundreds more. Some 300 were recruited and underwent training, where they received instructions on what to say if questioned, and to hide any affiliation with Hamas. Israel began to arrest the Hamas operatives, and by January had arrested some 250, which has effectively blocked the plan.

Chicago synagogue desecrated with Arabic writing, "Death to Israel"

And they're calling it a possible hate crime. "Synagogue possible target of hate crime," from the Chicago Tribune, with thanks to Andrew Bostom:

A synagogue on Chicago's North Side may have been the target of a hate crime after vandals spray-painted derogatory messages on the building early Saturday, police said.

Officers were called to the Ner Tamid Ezra-Habonin Congregation of North Town, at 2754 W. Rosemont Ave., on Saturday evening and found the front door spray-painted with offensive language, Officer John Mirabelli said.

Someone wrote "Free Palestine" on the door in English as well as Arabic writings, said. Izzie Weinzweig, president of the congregation. "Death to Israel" and similar language was spray-painted on signs posted on the side of the building, he said.

Fire station evacuated after bomb scare (Michigan)
Monday, April 02, 2007

GRAND RAPIDS -- Police this morning evacuated the Grand Rapids fire station at Bridge Street and Winter Avenue after someone handed a plastic grocery bag containing what appeared to be a pipe bomb to a firefighter. Police are unsure of the motive of the person.

Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Tom Lyzenga said he looked inside the bag and saw a coil of green fuse and what appeared to be a container of black powder and a metal pipe. Police have cordoned off the area and evacuated the fire station and one nearby building, and also are keeping people from an adjacent DASH parking lot on Winter. The Grand Rapids police bomb disposal unit is on the scene and plans to use a robot equipped with a camera to look inside the bag to see if it's an assembled pipe bomb or not.

Lyzenga was not aware of any threats against the station. A fireman accepted the bag from the man who wandered away. He said he did not appear threatening. The man handed him the bag without saying anything. "It could be just found property," Lyzenga said, "but we don't know."

An unknown person made the pipe bomb using plastic pipe and fireworks, then took it to the reservoir on Milesburg Road to set it off, state police said. When the bomb failed to explode, the person left the scene. The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources saw the bomb at the reservoir and reported it to state police, who dispatched the bomb squad at about 4:50 p.m. The bomb was dismantled.

Former FBI Agent on Private Business in Iran Missing
Monday, April 2, 2007

A former FBI agent has been missing in Iran since March 8, according to U.S. officials.

The unnamed former agent was on private business, but the United States is now sufficiently concerned about his welfare that the State Department today sent a formal message to Iran through Swiss intermediaries asking about his whereabouts and his situation. The Swiss Embassy represents U.S. interests in Iran. The American was visiting Kish Island, an Iranian resort and "free trade zone" off the country's southwestern coast that does not require an Iranian visa to visit. He had traveled to Iran from the United Arab Emirates, U.S. officials said. "We don't know where he is. We have no reliable information on him," a senior official said. "I would not characterize him as a hostage."

U.S. officials stress that the missing American was not working in any capacity for the U.S. government or any agency. His specialty at the FBI was not Iran, officials add. The State Department said the missing American, a middle-aged man who had retired from the FBI, was going to meet someone to set up an interview or interviews for a project involving a book and a documentary by a third party from Canada. He was effectively doing legwork for what a senior U.S. official described as an "innocuous" project. The project "had no connection with anything political," the official said. "The guy was on a perfectly harmless private activity."

The case is unrelated to the 15 British sailors and marines seized by Iran in the Persian Gulf on March 23, U.S. officials said. But the United States has its own long history with hostages in Iran, most notably the 52 Americans held captive from November 1979 until January 1981 after the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was seized by militants.

The missing American, whose name is not being divulged by the State Department for privacy reasons, had a long career combating organized crime in the United States, including the mafia. After he retired more than a decade ago, he worked in private investigations for corporate clients, according to U.S. officials. As an FBI agent, he was not assigned to terrorism or Middle East issues, the officials said.

Kish Island was established as a free trade zone in the mid-1990s in an attempt to attract foreign investment and as a place for Iranians to go on vacation. The goal was to have a rival for the glitzy sheikhdoms such as Dubai across the Persian Gulf. The normally rigid social customs are more relaxed on Kish. More than 1 million people visit every year.

Pipe bomb disarmed in Franklin County (Missouri)
04/02/2007

Authorities in Franklin County today disarmed a pipe bomb found under a bridge on Highway O in Catawissa. Traffic on the roadway was blocked after the bomb was found around noon by a local highway department worker. The St. Louis County bomb and arson squad, the FBI and the ATF all came to the scene.

Authorities do not know how long the device may have been at the location or if it was hidden there with intent to damage the bridge. An investigation is continuing.

Egypt: President Anwar Sadat’s Jihad killer released
Mon. April 02, 2007

Mr. Nabil Bakr, a Jihad member who was sentenced to life in prison by a military tribunal in 1982 for his participation in planning Egyptian president Anwar Sadat's assassination in October 1981, was released recently, a local media reported on Monday.

Where as Egypt’s imprisonment laws stipulates that a life prison term is 15 years, Bakr was kept in custody ten years longer. According to reports, Bakr is one of four Jihad members who the authorities consider too dangerous to let free.

Meanwhile, observers believe his release may mark the beginning of a closure of the file on Jihad members lingering in jail years after they had served their sentences. The group's leader, Aboud El-Zomor - an ex-intelligence senior officer thought to be the mastermind behind Sadat's assassination - has time and again contested the legality of keeping him in prison, so far to no avail.

Taliban deploy thousands of suicide bombers
Mon Apr 2, 2007

SPIN BOLDAK, Afghanistan - Thousands of Taliban suicide bombers have been deployed across Afghanistan to attack Western troops and the government, the group's military chief said on Monday. Following last year's violence, the worst since the Taliban's ouster in 2001, this year is regarded as the crunch period both for the Taliban and U.S.-led Western troops.

Speaking to Reuters by satellite phone from an undisclosed location, Mullah Dadullah, the Taliban's military head, said the Islamic guerrillas had the ability and the weapons to fight foreign troops for a long time. "We have sent thousands of Taliban suicide bombers to all Afghan cities for attacks on foreign troops and their Afghan puppets," Dadullah said. "And we will turn our motherland into the graveyard of the U.S forces and their families should wait for their dead bodies. The Taliban's war is only for the freedom of Afghanistan from the enemies of Muslims."

New leadership is seen on rise within Al Qaeda
April 2, 2007

WASHINGTON: As Al Qaeda rebuilds in Pakistan's tribal areas, a new generation of leaders has emerged under Osama bin Laden to cement control over the network's operations, according to American intelligence and counterterrorism officials.

The new leaders rose from within the organization after the death or capture of the operatives that built Al Qaeda before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, leading to surprise and dismay within United States intelligence agencies about the group's ability to rebound from an American-led offensive. It has been known that American officials were focusing on a band of Al Qaeda training camps in Pakistan's remote mountains, but a clearer picture is emerging about those who are running the camps and thought to be involved in plotting attacks.

Getting Kareem Freed

Four years in prison for blogging: three of them for inciting “hatred of Islam” and one for “insulting the president.” That’s the sentence handed down by an Egyptian judge to a young Egyptian blogger, Abdelkareem Nabil Soliman, generally known in the blogosphere as “Kareem.” On his website, he had criticized his university, Al Azhar, for being close minded and for suppressing thought — for which he was expelled. He called Egypt’s president Mubarak a dictator — for which he was arrested and imprisoned. As he noted, “I broke the widespread traditions in the Great Jail of the Arab Republic of Egypt!” For that he was sent to jail.

A more sensitive issue is that he openly criticized the practices of the founders of Islam and argued that they were not models for modern life. His remarks inflamed radical political Islamists. They even offended some who have defended him, although that has not dampened their resolve. His two staunchest defenders are Dalia Ziada and Esraa Al Shafei, two young Muslim women who have worked tirelessly in behalf of his freedom. Both are outspoken in defense both of their religion and of Kareem’s right to be critical of it.

Kareem’s problems with the authorities started in March of last year, when he wrote about riots against the Coptic minority in his home city of Alexandria. On his blog he wrote:
