:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

Public Announcement: Thailand
U.S. Embassy Bangkok issued the following Warden Message on April 11, 2007:

A small explosive device was detonated at approximately 11:30 PM on April 9th in front of the Major Cineplex near the intersection of Phahon Yothin Rd and Ratchada Phisek Rd in Bangkok. No one was hurt in the explosion, which caused minor property damage.

Thailand will celebrate the traditional Thai New Year (Songkran) from April 13 to 17, 2007. While the Embassy has no evidence of any specific threats during the Songkran celebrations, Thai officials have previously warned of the possibility of increased attacks during holidays and other special occasions. A series of explosions rocked Bangkok on New Year’s Eve 2006, and two grenades were fired at the offices of a local newspaper along Vipayadee Rangsit Road in northern Bangkok and a nearby hotel car park on January 30, 2007.

An integral part of the Songkran holiday celebration involves throwing or squirting water, sometimes mixed with powder, on cars and pedestrians. This, combined with increased traffic, is likely to bring about a marked increase in traffic accidents throughout Thailand, especially those that involve motorcycles and pedestrians. Water-related Songkran festivities, increased holiday traffic, and large crowds of revelers are also often exploited by pickpockets and other scam artists. We urge all Americans to be extra cautious in public places and to pay particular attention to road safety during this holiday period.

Worldwide, the Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas, but does not have any specific information indicating an increase risk to Americans in Thailand. U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security.

On April 9, 2007, the Department of State issued an updated Worldwide Public Announcement with regard to the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Americans and interests overseas. The worldwide public announcement can be found at: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1161.html

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Travel Warnings, and Public Announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays). American citizens traveling or residing in Thailand are encouraged to register with the Department of State or the U.S. Embassy. The Embassy is located at 95 Wireless Road in Bangkok. The American Citizen Services Unit of the U.S. Embassy can be reached by calling 66-2-205-4049 and by e-mail at ACSBKK@State.gov. Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement
U.S. Consulate Casablanca issued the following Warden Message on April 10, 2007:

As noted in the November 20, 2006 Public Announcement for the Middle East and North Africa, there are ongoing security concerns in the region. Further to the November Public Announcement and the February 9, 2007 warden message issued by the Consulate General, U.S. citizens in Morocco are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.

Following an April 10 incident in Casablanca during which Moroccan police confronted three potential terrorists in a residential neighborhood, the U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca temporarily suspended services to the public. The potential for violence against American interests and citizens and other Western targets remains high in Morocco and the Consulate General encourages Americans in Morocco to remain vigilant regarding their personal security. Moroccan authorities continue to disrupt groups seeking to attack U.S.- or Western-affiliated targets and arrest individuals associated with international terrorist groups. Establishments which are readily identifiable with the United States are potential targets for attacks. These may include facilities where US citizens and other foreigners congregate, including clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, movie theaters and other public areas. Such targets may also include establishments where activities occur that may offend religious sensitivities, such as casinos or places where alcoholic beverages are sold or consumed. Due to varying degrees of security at all such locations, Americans should be particularly vigilant when visiting these establishments.

While in Morocco, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and maintain a low profile. All U.S. citizens are urged to consider seriously their personal security and to take those measures they deem appropriate to ensure their well-being. Report any suspicious incidents or problems immediately to Moroccan authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Rabat or the U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca.

The U.S. Department of State encourages all American citizens residing in Morocco to register their presence and obtain up-to-date information on security conditions at the U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca at 8 Blvd. Moulay Youssef, Telephone: 022-43-05-78. After hours, please call 022-26-45-50 or 061-17-23-67. Information is also available on our website at: http://casablanca.usconsulate.gov/warden_information.html.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement, and other Travel Warnings and Public Announcements can be found. Up to date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States, or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. Nigeria: persecution, elections and looming strife
- requesting prayer for Nigeria

By Elizabeth Kendal
World Evangelical Alliance Religious Liberty Commission (WEA RLC)
Special to ASSIST News Service

AUSTRALIA (ANS) — Christians have been appallingly persecuted in northern Nigeria recently with churches burned, Christian children kidnapped by Islamists and Christians killed.

PERSECUTION

Compass Direct reports one such incident on 21 March when Christianah Oluwatoyin Oluwasesin, a teacher at the Government Secondary School of Gandu in the northern state of Gombe, was preparing to supervise an exam. In line with standard anti-cheating procedures, she collected all the students’ bags before the exam started and put them at the front of the classroom. One girl then cried out that because a Christian had handled her bag the Quran in it had been desecrated. With the Muslim majority of students shouting ‘Allahu Akbar [God is great]’ another teacher managed to rescue Christianah Oluwasesin and get her into the principal’s office. Then Muslims who rushed into the school, stoning the building and the staff, dragged Christianah Oluwasesin out and clubbed her to death. Evangel Chapel, where Christianah Oluwasesin (married and mother of two) taught Sunday school and participated in prayer ministry, is in shock and grief. Two days later a nearby 500-member church belonging to the Evangelical Church of West Africa was torched.
ELECTIONS

On 14 April Nigerians will elect state governors and on 21 April will return to the polling booths for the presidential election. This will be the first time power will have passed from one elected president to another, but the situation looks ominous. President Obasanjo’s PDP party has put forward Obasanjo’s favoured candidate, the sickly and reluctant Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who wanted Obasanjo to stand for an unconstitutional third term. Because he is so quiet, many believe Yar’Adua, governor of Katsina State which implemented Sharia in 2000, is little more than a puppet.

There are two other main contenders: the pro-Sharia Islamic hardliner, retired general and former military dictator Muhamadu Buhari who lost to Obasanjo in 2003; and Obasanjo’s Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also a Muslim. Buhari has strong support in the Muslim north but little elsewhere. As Vice President, Abubakar was assumed to be the natural successor, but a major spat between Obasanjo and Abubakar has left him fighting for his political life in the courts. If Abubakar is banned from running, the great threat is he might throw his considerable weight behind Buhari in exchange for immunity from prosecution. To compensate, the PDP could offer other candidates immunity from corruption charges in exchange for their support for Yar’Adua. One non-Muslim candidate of high intellect and integrity is the widely respected Dr Patrick Utomi http://www.patutomi2007.com/, but he is considered an outside runner as his African Democratic Congress is a fringe party.

NIGER DELTA: STRIFE LOOMS

Meanwhile, the most volatile region, the Niger Delta, is set to explode. A group calling itself the ‘Coalition of Niger Delta Forces’ has issued an ultimatum to the Nigerian government to withdraw its security forces from the Niger Delta or face war. Nigeria’s largest armed militant group is the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF). It is noteworthy that the leader of the NDPVF, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari (imprisoned in 2005 for treason), is a devout Muslim and vocal supporter of Osama bin Laden, with whom he reportedly has both financial and personal ties. Asari, born into a Christian family as Dokubo Melford Goodhead Junior, changed his name after he converted to Islam. His father is a High Court judge. The Niger Delta situation is yet another example of the union between separatism and Islamic imperialism.

PLEASE PRAY SPECIFICALLY FOR:

God to comfort Christianah Oluwasesin’s family and her fellow believers in Evangel Chapel.

comfort and peace for all the persecuted and fearful Christians in northern Nigeria where persecution is systematic and brutal.

God to encompass his people amidst trials and terror, protecting them from hostile forces.

the forthcoming elections, that God will raise up before the people his candidate, a ‘Cyrus’ whom God will use to lead this nation of some 130 million, half of whom are not Muslim, and most of whom just want peace, justice, equity, liberty and progress.
‘I will raise up Cyrus in my righteousness: I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild my city and set my exiles free. . .’ (Isaiah 45:1-13 NIV)

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Thu Apr 12 2007 01:54:40 GMT-0700.

Worldwide Caution

April 10, 2007

This Public Announcement updates information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Americans and interests overseas. This supersedes the Worldwide Caution dated October 11, 2006 and expires on October 9, 2007.

The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in multiple regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics to include assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings and bombings.

Ongoing events in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East have resulted in demonstrations and associated violence in several countries. Americans are reminded that demonstrations and rioting can occur with little or no warning.

In August 2006, British authorities arrested a significant number of extremists engaged in a plot to destroy multiple passenger aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States. The September 2006 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Syria and the March 2006 bombing near the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan illustrate the continuing desire of extremists to strike American targets.

Extremists may elect to use conventional or non-conventional weapons, and target both official and private interests. The bomb attacks targeting buses carrying foreign workers in March 2007 and December 2006 in Algeria, a series of bombings in Thailand in May and September 2006 that targeted commercial and tourist destinations in the far south, and the bombings in the the Egyptian resort town of Dahab in April 2006 all illustrate how terrorists exploit vulnerabilities associated with soft targets. Additional examples of such targets include high-profile sporting events, residential areas, business offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, public areas and locales where Americans gather in large numbers, including during holidays. Financial or economic targets of value may also be considered as possible venues; the vehicle-based suicide attack on an oil facility near Mukalla and Marib in Yemen in September 2006 and the failed attack on the Abqaiq oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia in late February 2006 are such examples.

In the wake of the August 2006 plot against aircraft in London, numerous terrorist attacks on trains in India in 2006, the July 2005 London Underground bombings, and the March 2004 train attacks in Madrid, Americans are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems. In addition, extremists may also select aviation and maritime services as possible targets.

U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. For additional information, please refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” found at http://travel.state.gov .

U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Americans abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its Consular Information Program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov . In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

“India tests longest-range missile”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “India has test-fired its longest-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile nine months after its first launch failed.

The Agni-III surface-to-surface missile was test-fired off the coast of Orissa state in eastern India, defence officials said.

Reports say it could hit targets as far off as Beijing and Shanghai.

The Agni-III is India’s most sophisticated long-range missile. Analysts say it has a range of more than 3,000km (1,865 miles).”
