Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work
-Full Story-

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

“New TB Strain in South Africa a Concern”
Apr 7th - 9:14pm
By CELEAN JACOBSON Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - The extent of the deadly new strain of tuberculosis in South Africa and the region is not known and is cause for concern, an international health expert said Wednesday.

Dr Fabio Scano, a TB expert from the World Health Organization in Geneva, has been sent to South Africa at the request of the government to assist with the outbreak of the extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis strain, or XDR-TB.

“We don’t know the extent of multiple drug resistant and extreme drug resistant TB in sub-Saharan Africa and the southern African region. There is not yet the capacity to test in these countries,” Scano said at a news conference.

South Africa has reported 352 cases of the virulent strain since it was discovered last year in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province. There have been 221 deaths and concerns have been raised about the strain spreading across the region.

Scano said an epidemiological investigation was under way to determine the full extent of the disease.”

“India’s foreign minister injured in car accident”
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW DELHI

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The accident took place late Saturday as Mukherjee, 72, was traveling back from his parliamentary constituency north of Calcutta, eastern India’s main city, said Raj Kanojia, a senior police official in the state of West Bengal, where the crash occurred.

The truck driver apparently lost control when a tire burst as Mukherjee’s convoy was driving past in the opposite lane, Kanojia said.

The Press Trust of India news agency described his condition as serious in its initial reports filed soon after the accident, although a lawmaker from the governing Congress party, Adhir Chowdhury, said Sunday the foreign minister was out of danger.”

Police say man assaulted Pa. woman in Akron area”
By John Higgins
Beacon Journal staff writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “She called her husband from Cleveland on Saturday afternoon. Her child was unharmed, and the woman was being treated for the assault in a Cleveland-area hospital.

He has distinctive tattoos on his arms resembling Chinese writing. He was wearing a red and khaki two-piece outfit and driving the victim’s blue 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a Pennsylvania plate: FPH 6490.

The woman, who is in her mid-30s, left her home in a wealthy northern suburb of Pittsburgh with her child at 9:40 a.m. to shop at the Giant Eagle at Pittsburgh’s Waterworks Mall.

When she did not return by 11:30 a.m., her husband became concerned. He filed a missing-person report with police there at 1 p.m.”

“New Castle church burns
‘This is a dastardly deed for a church to be criminalized on the eve of one of the holiest holidays,’ state fire marshal says”

By Cordell Eddings
cordell.eddings@indystar.com

“The parishioners of St. Anne Catholic Church in New Castle don’t intend to let Saturday’s destruction of their 83-year-old building by fire dampen their Easter service.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “At 8 a.m. today, church members will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ in a service in Bundy Auditorium at Chrysler High School, about two miles away.

“The church was so symbolic. But it’s about the people,” said Sister Shirley Gerth, coordinator of the 700-member parish.

“Our faith is strong, and we believe God is still with us. We will rebuild,” she said.

Authorities say they have evidence indicating the fire started as a result of a criminal act, but they declined to elaborate.

“This is a dastardly deed for a church to be criminalized on the eve of one of the holiest holidays,” State Fire Marshal Roger Johnson said.”

Muslim cleric threatens suicide attacks

By Sheraz Khurram Khan
Special Correspondent for ASSIST News Service in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: An emotionally charged madressah youth screams slogans against perceived immorality in the capital as a pile of CDs and cassettes burns near Lal Masjid on Friday. — Dawn

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN (ANS) — A hard-line Muslim cleric has threatened to unleash a wave of suicide attacks if the Pakistan government tries to counter his bid of enforcing Islamic laws in the federal capital through vigilante Islamic courts that he announced he would set up.

Maulana Abdul Aziz made the threat while addressing the Friday congregation in the Lal Masjid (red mosque) located near the city centre of Islamabad.

“The government has been saying that an operation against us is the last option, I want to tell the government that suicide attacks are our last option,” the Reuters News Agency quoted him as saying.

Maulana Aziz, the chief cleric of the Lal Masjid, flexing his “religious muscles” in a Taliban-like fashion, set a one-month deadline for the government to ensure closure of music shops and bordellos.

Last month, the cleric’s quest for eroding “immorality” resulted in imprisonment of three women accused of being prostitutes in Jamia Hafsa, a radical religious school that is being run under his patronage.
Aziz reportedly said the religious school students will take action themselves to stamp out vice from the capital if the government failed to do so.

“Our youths will shake their palaces with their suicide attacks,” the Reuters News Agency quoted him as telling Friday congregation at the mosque.

“They should not take the law into their own hands; this will create lawlessness in the country. We will not allow them, I will not allow this,” the Reuters News Agency quoted Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf as telling a convention on Friday.

Pakistan’s leading Human Rights Activist, Asma Jehangir, reportedly said a rally would take place in the eastern city of Lahore on April 19 to condemn the cleric’s moves.

The writer is a freelance journalist based in Pakistan.

7 hurt in Khartoum blast

8 April 2007

KHARTOUM - Seven people including children have been injured when a truck loaded with ammunition exploded on Saturday near a weapons depot in the Sudanese capital, officials said.

The blast occurred when heat caused a spark on the truck, the defence and interior ministries said in a statement. Seven people were injured by shrapnel, including three children.

Saturday’s explosion caused the brief closure of Khartoum’s international airport and witnesses described seeing a fireball, and columns of smoke rising into the air.

"Why doesn't the mainstream media tell Americans Saudi Arabia has been paying for the Wahhabist sect teaching materials for Islamic mosques in the Middle East, as well as for mosques here in the United States?"

I ditto Cindy's previous ditto. Also, the above really steams me.... I suppose this is because we still need some kind of ami in the ME even if the party in question is not a good all-around friend.
